‘Sleuth’ remake … not really a remake, and very good!
So last night I was perusing through blockbuster and saw this movie on the shelves. The crazy thing is that it stars Michael Caine and Jude Law, who also produced it … and I never heard one damn thing about it! I don’t remember it coming to theaters, and there it was just sitting there waiting to be rented by me!
Technically this is classified as a remake, but both Jude Law and Harold Pinter went at this movie in a completely different way. Law gave Pinter the original theater play and asked him to write a screenplay from it. Pinter had never seen the original film in 1972.
First let me give you the synopsis of the film:Â “A millionaire detective novelist matches wits with the unemployed actor who ran off with his wife in a deadly serious, seriously twisted game with dangerous consequences.”
What I absolutely love is the fact that Michael Caine played Jude Law’s character in the original 1972 version, and in this adaptation he plays the millionaire novelist. The movie is beautifully shot, witty, and will keep you guessing.
Some of the shots at the beginning of the movie get annoying because they are awkward views of the characters, and by characters I mean the only two guys that ever show up in the movie. Which is the other thing I loved about this movie. Michael Caine, and Jude Law ARE the movie, there is no one else in the movie.
Maybe its so great because everyone has been in that type of situation before, facing your ex partners new partner. The awkwardness of it all … just great. If you are out and about, go rent this movie … tell us what you think!
