Coppola adopts Gallo & Bardem into his ‘Tetro’ Family
Legendary American film-maker Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather, Apocolypse Now) has been relatively MIA since his last film, The Rainmaker (1997). He recently returned to the movies with the sci-fi romantic mystery Youth Without Youth (2007) and is now preparing for his next film. Tetro is a drama that tells the story of an artistic Italian immigrant family, torn apart by bitter rivalries. Coppola has apparently wanted to make this film for some time now, perhaps because it has some personal resonance with him. Matt Dillon has been attached to play the title character for a while, Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men) was recently added to the cast, but now the infamous Vincent Gallo (Buffalo 66, The Brown Bunny) has been tapped as well. Its hard telling how these three independently minded artistically driven forces will work together, with Coppola’s drive for perfection (likely outmatched only by that of Kubrick’s) along with Gallo’s reputation for being outspoken and often difficult to work with. However, if the three hit it off they’re sure to produce something great together. Production is set to begin on March 31, 2008 with a hopeful release in 2009.
