Yes, Folks…“Dr. Seuss` Horton Hears a Who” reigns once again with little sign of slowing! Once again a G Rating, and timeless tale proved to dominate at the theaters. Tyler Perry offering his newest fare in “Meet the Browns”, which was the only film that even came close to claiming the crown with a $20 million dollar take. 20th Century Fox’s remake film “Shutter” fronted by Joshua Jackson (of Dawson’s Creek fame) did an expected $10 million, coming to nearly a tie with Paramount’s “Drillbit Taylor”. “10,000 B.C.” drops three slots to no. 5, bringing that to a total of $76 million to date domestically, and $150.5 million worldwide(credit). “Never Back Down” continues to fight it out to remain on the Top 10, and again beat out “College Road Trip”,“The Bank Job”,and “Vantage Point” which is looking to retire from the Top 10 next week, but has already hit $65 million in what is it’s 5th week of release. The mutual release between Weinstein & Fox Searchlight of “Under The Same Moon” about a Mother who comes to America to work towards providing a better life for her family back home…leaving her son behind with his grandmother, who later passes away, forcing the son to fend for himself.  This took in only $2.7 million, however did this in 266 theaters 10% the theaters of some of the others.
The Neil Marshall Post-Apocalyptic Action-er “Doomsday” gets Honorable mention this week if for no other reason than it’s meteoric descent from the charts. In only it’s second week “Doomsday” now sits at no.11 with an appalling $8.9 million. I really had higher hopes, and expectations for this one, and perceive it doing better on DVD.
Hitting theaters this week is: “21” Starring Kevin Spacey & Kate Bosworth, a true tale of a group of MIT students training to, and eventually taking Vegas for millions. Simon Pegg steps out of his usual style of film, and into “Run, Fat Boy, Run” a David Schwimmer directed comedy following an overweight man’s run back into the heart of his love. Paramount & MTV films is releasing “Stop-Loss” starring Ryan Phillippe as a soldier coming home from a tour of Iraq, and refuses to go back after he is re-deployed. We’ll also be seeing the newest Spoof film poking fun at the latest in Superhero movies “Superhero Movie”. All these hitting in wide release March 28th. In limited release: “American Zombie” is a mockumentary about the everyday struggle of Zombies to “Live” in a human dominated L.A. & Demi Moore, and Michael Caine “Flawless” is being described as a Heist-Thriller, and should be watchable.
See you at the movies!
