WAMG First Look at ‘Leatherheads’
On the cusp of the New York Giant’s spectacular underdog upset against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII, I decided to bring attention to Leatherheads, due out in theatres this April 2008. George Clooney co-stars along side Renee Zellweger, in what is being marketed oddly as a romantic comedy set during the early days of professional American football. I’m not sure why you would market a football movie as a romantic comedy. When Bull Durham hit theatres, they didn’t market it as a romantic comedy just because Crash had a relationship with Annie.
Anyway, the reason I am surprisingly pumped about this movie is because it’s George Clooney’s third project as director. Clooney is a great comedic actor, even though he’s typically always, well … Clooney. However, I have really enjoyed both of his first two films, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002) and Good Night, and Good Luck (2005). It’s my opinion that Clooney will be around for awhile and we’ll see more and more of him behind the camera as he gets older. Leatherheads looks to be a great comedy with sharp, witty humor and some good period cinematography. There looks to be a lot of down-and-dirty, no-holds-bar football fun as well.
