Toshiba admits defeat, dumps HD DVD

Blu Ray shuts HD DVD down

A giant, yet not entirely surprising, announcement has officially been made in the home entertainment technology market. Toshiba has come to terms with its inevitable loss in the race to be the top contender for home theatres in the future. With this announcement, Sony’s Blu-Ray now stands unchallenged to become the new industry standard. Hopefully, Sony doesn’t allow this to go to their heads … otherwise, we movie geeks may not see decent prices on Blu Ray moves for quite a while. I suppose Sony is happy that Blu-Ray didn’t end up going the way of their Beta technology, but really … they had it coming.

Toshiba CEO Atsutoshi Nishida — “We realized that if we were to continue in this business on such a small scale, we would only inconvenience our customers and partners,† Nishida explained. “We also saw that, from a competitive standpoint, there was no way we could win.† — Variety
