Top 10 Lists
Top 10 Football Movies … of all time
Since football season is over (well, after the pro bowl next weekend) here are some movies to get on by until September.
10. We Are Marshall – 2006
I wasnt ape shit about this movie, but I did enjoy it. I guess the underdog story has been done so many times just like this movie that I didnt get all teary eyed.
09. The Replacements – 2000
Keanu and Hackman..but in a goofy movie about Pro football players going on strike and having to find a bunch of second stringers to fill their roles. Pretty good movie.
08. Any Given Sunday – 1999
This was one of my favorite Jamie Foxx movie, mostly because he showed he could be a serious actor. Also starring Al Paccino as a drunk head coach who is into prostitutes, and Dennis Quaid the injured and mostly washed up QB. Star studded cast: LL Cool J, Cameron Diaz, Aaron Eckhard, Matthew Modine..but not good enough for the movie to do really well.
07. Invincible – 2006
I really liked this movie, mostly because of Mark Wahlberg. This movie was based on the true story of Vince Papale, a Philly kid who makes good on promises he made to friends and family to try out for the Eagles if he ever had a chance. Greg Kinnear also turned in a great performance as Dick Vermeil.
06. Remember the Titans – 2000
Yet another true football story about the fight between Black and White football players coming together in a newly race integrated school in Virginia. Denzel Washington, Ryan Gossling, Donald Faison, and Kate Bosworth star.
05. Necessary Roughness – 1991
Ok, the premise of this movie is PERFECT! Scott Bakula plays a guy in his late 20’s, early 30’s who was a high school star that never played colleges thus having full eligibility still. After the NCAA sanctions their team they have to find a full roster full of players and recruit Bakula to play QB. Sinbad also comes in as a teacher who is recruited for defense. classic!
04. Jerry Maguire – 1996
“Show me the MONEY!” Who can forget all the classic lines this movie produced. “Whose coming with me?“. Tom Cruise, Cuba Gooding Jr, and Renà ©e Zellweger star in this Love story with Football underlines.
03- Friday Night Lights – 2004
Going along with the theme of most football movies, Friday Night Lights was based on a true story as well. We are led into Odessa Texas to follow Permian Panthers high school where football is more than just a sport, its life. Based in 1988 the film is based off on a book in which the author followed the team through the State Semi’s. Movie Stars Billy Bob Thorton, Lucas Black, Jay Hernandez, and Tim McGraw.
02 – Varsity Blues – 1999
Really one of the only MTV movies that was worth a shit, varsity blues sported a stunning cast of young actors, a killer soundtrack, and a great plot. Everyone and their dog has seen this movie, so I dont really need to go in depth eh?
01 – The Program – 1993
I watched this movie when I was 11, and probably shouldnt have..but I loved it instantly! This movie deals with what every college football team deals with, The Heisman trophy candidate, steroids, attempted rape, alcohol abuse, and dangerous stunts that have to be cut out of the movie because kids are actually trying it(laying in the middle of an intersection on the yellow lines to prove your manhood). If you can find this movie on DVD, then watch it! It begs the questions, where the hell has Craig Scheffer gone?
