Marvel is thinking ‘Venom’ Spin-off
Despite the many critics of Spider-Man 3, I felt the character design of Venom was great. OK, so I wasn’t 100% sold on casting Topher Grace, but I went to see Venom, not Eddie Brock. Anyway, it turns out that Marvel is seriously considering making a Venom spin-off movie now that they’ve reached an agreement with the WGA. But, doesn’t Sony own the rights to Spider-Man, you ask? Yes, but as it turns out Marvel owns the rights to Venom even though he appeared in Spider-Man 3.
Apparently, screenwriter James Vanderbilt (Zodiac) is extremely excited to get started on writing a Venom spin-off. The future of the Spider-Man franchise is still cloudy, due to the strike and Sony’s ownership, but Marvel has plenty of other characters it can put to work, including Thor and Captain America, which are Marvel’s next two priorities. Once made, Marvel is eagerly awaiting the production of an Avengers movie, which has Jon Favreau talking a long-term Marvel relationship to direct, as he’s already signed a deal to make Iron Man a trilogy.
