Film Noir
In case you missed it … ‘Brick’
Brick was originally written in 1996 after Rian Johnson graduated film school at USC, and began production 6 years later in 2003. With only a budget of 435,000 they shot the film in San Clemente, California on 35mm film and mostly filmed at the high school in San Clemente. Which is also where Rian Johnson attended high school.
They landed Joseph Gordon-Levitt to star, whom you may remember from 3rd rock from the sun, angels in the outfield, and 10 things I hate about you. The film is dark, gritty and smart. Your average movie goer probably wouldn’t appreciate this movie as much as a movie geek would. I found the movie to be very original, and edgy. Follow closely or you might miss something.
Although getting a 78% fresh rating on rotten tomatoes it only made 3.35 million at the box office, and found a moderate following on DVD. I wish this movie had been bigger, but it wasnt. maybe we could all go out and buy it and spike DVD sales for it again.
