‘The Road’ is Taking Form

You would have though that Oprah would ever feature a book like Cormac McCarthy’s bestselling The Road on her cherished book list? Well, she did and fans read it, loved it and now a movie adaptation is being made. In case you aren’t familiar with the novel, the story center on a man who makes a perilous journey across an post-apocalyptic America with his son after a disastrous nuclear explosion. He hopes to find food and safety on the west coast, but to get there they must fend off cannibals along the way. Australian filmmaker John Hillcoat (The Proposition) will direct the movie and casting has already produced two stars; Viggo Mortenson (Eastern Promises) and most recently Charlize Theron (Monster).
[Theron, who will play the wife of Mortensen’s character, will be seen mostly in flashback. Although the role is small, Theron joined the project because she’s a big fan of the book — published by Knopf in 2006 — and was eager to reteam with producer Nick Wechsler, with whom she worked on 2000’s “The Yards.”] — Variety |
