WaterTower Music has announced the release of the soundtrack album for the highly anticipated upcoming movie musical Rock of Ages on June 5, 2012. The ROCK OF AGES: ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK boasts 20 rousing anthems that defined a generation—reinvigorated for the film by a stellar cast including Julianne Hough, Diego Boneta, Russell Brand, Paul Giamatti, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Malin Akerman, Mary J. Blige, Alec Baldwin and Tom Cruise.

Directed by Adam Shankman (Hairspray), New Line Cinema’s Rock of Ages is the film adaptation of the smash hit, five-time Tony® nominated Broadway musical which tells the story of small town girl Sherrie and city boy Drew, who meet on the Sunset Strip while pursuing their Hollywood dreams. Executive Music Producer Adam Anders (Glee) helps tell the rock ‘n’ roll romance through cast versions of heart-pounding hits of Def Leppard, Poison, Journey, Twisted Sister, Bon Jovi, Joan Jett, Foreigner, Night Ranger, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Whitesnake, and more.

As the larger-than-life, arena-rocking champ “Stacee Jaxx,” the Rock of Ages Soundtrack features Tom Cruise belting out Bon Jovi’s classic “Wanted Dead or Alive,” Def Leppard’s hit “Pour Some Sugar On Me,” and Guns ‘N Roses anthem “Paradise City.” Cruise also duets with Malin Akerman on Foreigner’s power ballad, “I Want To Know What Love Is,” and shares the mic with Julianne Hough on The Scorpions’ “Rock You Like A Hurricane.”

The album also features an extraordinary medley of Night Ranger’s “Sister Christian,” David Lee Roth’s “Just Like Paradise,” and Poison’s “Nothin’ But A Good Time,” which features Julianne Hough, Diego Boneta, Russell Brand and Alec Baldwin.

Also echoing through the soundtrack are mash-ups of songs that ruled the airwaves in the ’80s, including Foreigner’s “Juke Box Hero” / Joan Jett’s “I Love Rock N Roll”; Extreme’s “More Than Words” / Warrant’s “Heaven”; Pat Benatar’s “Shadows Of The Night” / Quarterflash’s “Harden My Heart”; and Starship’s “We Built This City” woven into Twisted Sister’s “We’re Not Gonna Take It,” all performed by the film’s cast.

Marvel Music/Hollywood Records announce the return of Soundgarden with the release of the band’s first song in 15 years, “Live to Rise.”  The song will be featured in the end credits to this year’s highly anticipated movie, MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS. “Live to Rise” is included on Avengers Assemble, a 14-track compilation of music from and inspired by the film. Avengers Assemble will be released on May 1, 2012.

Soundgarden stated, “We’ve been hard at work on our new album, which will come out this Fall. When the opportunity arose to write an original song for ‘Marvel’s The Avengers’ film came our way, we thought it could be a cool match. We are excited to release our new song ‘Live To Rise,’ which is also the only new song in the film. Here’s a taste. Loudest of Love.”

Also, The Avengers original motion picture soundtrack, with score by Oscar®-nominated and GRAMMY-winning composer Alan Silvestri (“Captain America: The First Avenger,” “Forrest Gump,” the “Back to the Future” trilogy) will be available at online retailers on May 1, 2012.

With over 21 million records sold worldwide, Soundgarden redefined rock music for a whole generation and had a revolutionary impact on the course of musical history. At the dawn of 2010, the band, Chris Cornell,Matt Cameron, Kim Thayil and Ben Shepherd, announced a new beginning. In the last two years since Soundgarden has reunited, they have headlined festivals, toured the world and released their first retrospective titled Telephantasm which included the previously unreleased song, “Black Rain” and their first live album, Live on I-5. The press has exalted their return to the stage and the music scene. Synopsis:

Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), now the author of a self-help book, returns home to Woodsboro on the last stop of her book tour. There she reconnects with Sheriff Dewey (David Arquette) and Gale (Courteney Cox), who are now married, as well as her cousin Jill (Emma Roberts) and her Aunt Kate (Mary McDonnell). Unfortunately Sidney’s appearance also brings about the return of Ghostface, putting Sidney, Gale, and Dewey, along with Jill, her friends, and the whole town of Woodsboro in danger.

Have a listen as SoFlo Entertainment/Geddy Music performing artist, Armageddon, records an official mash-up remix for Queen’s “I Want It All and “We Will Rock You” debuting on the original motion picture soundtrack of SUCKER PUNCH, directed by Zach Snyder (300, WATCHMEN). The soundtrack is due out March 22 from WaterTower Music. Zack Snyder’s $85 million SUCKER PUNCH has been rated PG-13 and will be in theaters on March 25, 2011.

Spectra Records has inked a deal with Church Hill Productions and Chocolate Bunny Productions to release the soundtrack to their triple award winning film “Emerging Past.” The 17 song soundtrack, primarily an alternative rock album with a mixture of pop and instrumental movie themes, is available now for download via MP3 or to order as a CD through the film’s website. It will be available on iTunes in the upcoming weeks and in stores such as Best Buy, Borders and FYE in April. This partnership with Spectra marks quite an achievement for an independent film and puts “Emerging Past” into the ranks of major studio releases. ”One of the best soundtracks I’ve heard all year!  Great from start to finish.” – Bobby Collins, Spectra Records.

The musical score  and several songs were written for the film by Gerard McMann, better known as G Tom Mac, most famous for his cult favorite “Cry Little Sister” from the movie “The Lost Boys.” G Tom Mac has already had an internet hit with his single from the film “Soul I Bare” and its accompanying music video shot by “Emerging Past” filmmaker Thomas J. Churchill. G Tom Mac’s song with late actor Cory Haim, “Mend Me,” is also featured. Singer Katie DiCicco lends two songs to the CD: her award winning “Mud,” which took home Best Song from the New York City International Film Festival and “Beautiful Tragedy.” Churchill also directed the music video to “Mud” which can be seen on YouTube. Other Spectra artists such as Kizz Star and gold selling artist Magni round out the playlist.  Churchill is extremely proud of the finished product and feels it has “earned its position in stores next to soundtracks from the top grossing films.”

Churchill has garnered much attention lately in the horror film world with “Emerging Past,” which he wrote, directed and produced. After creating a buzz at the New York City Independent Film Festivalwhen a second screening had to be booked because of the overwhelming interest (a first in festival history), the film took home the award for Best Horror Feature and Best Song for “Mud.” This impressive accomplishment was followed by a Best Actor win at the Spooky Empire Freakshow Horror Film Festival in Orlando, FL in October. The Best Actor win made three wins in as many screenings, setting an enviable record for any feature film. Churchill premiered “Emerging Past” in Pennsylvania at the Mr. Hush Weekend of Fear, which also premiered “Mr. Hush” – a film in which he has a supporting role as Sheriff Churchill as well as being a producer. “Emerging Past” went on to the Salty Horror Film Festival in Salt Lake City and will continue to be shown to eager horror fans at festivals and conventions around the country in 2011.

“Emerging Past” is a horror twisted psycho-thriller rollercoaster ride of terror that follows a tormented woman on her journey to discover where her past is leading her. The film features an impressive cast of genre stars including: Brooke McCarter (“The Lost Boys”), Steve Dash (“Friday the 13^th Part 2), Tony Moran (“Halloween 1 & 2”) and Stephen Geoffreys (“Fright Night”).  Churchill says that his vision for the film came from a road trip to Washington DC, the setting for one of his favorite films, “The Exorcist” and says “somewhere between “The Exorcist” and “The Omen” “Emerging Past” shall sit.”

Features on a variety of internet radio programs – such as The Jimmy Star Show, Random Talk Radio and Mothpod – have helped to create anticipation and buzz on this film in the horror film community. It has also been mentioned on popular horror sites such as Dread Central, From Dusk Till Con, GeekTyrant and Encyclopedia Psychotica.

Churchill started out in the industry as an actor and moved on to creating films with his friends back home in New York City. Writing, directing and producing led to a Best Feature award at the age of 18 and his passion for filmmaking was sparked.  His lifelong love of the horror genre has fueled his two most recent projects: the previously mentioned “Emerging Past” and “Mr. Hush.” With several projects in pre-production, you can look for his films to continue to be screened and distributed across the country in the coming years.

Variety is reporting that the scores for BLACK SWAN, TRUE GRIT, THE FIGHTER and THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT are being disqualified from Oscar consideration.

“Black Swan” and “True Grit” have been deemed ineligible as “scores diluted by the use of tracked themes or other pre-existing music,” according to sources inside the Academy music-branch executive committee.

“The Kids Are All Right” and “The Fighter” are expected to be disqualified as scores “diminished in impact by the predominant use of songs,” another of the Acad’s stringent music rules.

Composer Clint Mansell’s “Black Swan” score, as largely adapted from Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake,” and Carter Burwell’s “True Grit,” as mostly based on 19th-century hymns, are not sufficiently “original,” the committee ruled last week.

“The Kids Are All Right” and “The Fighter” have original scores — “Kids” by Burwell and “Fighter” by Michael Brook — but both films are filled with songs, leaving the scores to play second fiddle much of the time.

Alexandre Desplat’s “The King’s Speech” has been ruled eligible despite some concerns by committee members that key moments of the film feature classical-music excerpts.

A Centennial Salute to Composer Alex North

Beverly Hills, CA: The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences will celebrate the career of Alex North (1910-1991), the 15-time Oscar®-nominated composer, with a centennial salute featuring a screening of THE MISFITS (1961) on Friday, September 24, at 7:30 p.m. at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. The event also will include film clips and an onstage discussion hosted by journalist and film-music historian Jon Burlingame, with Oscar-nominated composer Laurence Rosenthal, producer Steven North (Alex’s son), and North’s biographer Sanya Henderson.

Between 1951 and 1984, North received 14 Academy Award® nominations for Original Score and 1 for Song. He finally took home an Oscar statuette in 1985 when he was presented with an Honorary Award “in recognition of his brilliant artistry in the creation of memorable music for a host of distinguished motion pictures.”

North’s “brilliant artistry”included his work for A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE (1951), which was the first major score to draw heavily from jazz influences, DEATH OF A SALESMAN (1951) and WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? (1966). His ability to handle epic subject matter led to such assignments as VIVA ZAPATA! (1952), SPARTACUS (1960), CLEOPATRA (1963) and THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY (1965). In 1955 he wrote the now-classic music that was recorded as “Unchained Melody” for the prison movie UNCHAINED.

North’s musical background was unique; born in Pennsylvania, he studied in New York, Moscow and Mexico. He composed music for the New York stage and for such dancers and choreographers as Anna Sokolow, Martha Graham and Agnes de Mille. North was one of the first composers in Hollywood to incorporate contemporary music styles in his film scores. He demonstrated a particular affinity for specifically American subjects, and his music provided the themes for the film adaptations of numerous literary classics by such writers as Tennessee Williams and William Faulkner. Highly respected by his peers, North was an active mentor to the next generation of composers, including Jerry Goldsmith.

Featuring a jazzy and dramatic score by North, John Huston’s complex film THE MISFITS was the last screen appearance for both Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe. The film follows a sexy divorcee and three aging cowboys who make a living capturing wild horses in the Nevada desert.

The movie also stars Montgomery Clift, Thelma Ritter and Eli Wallach, one of the Academy’s 2010 Honorary Award recipients. THE MISFITS was directed by Huston and produced by Frank E. Taylor, with a screenplay by Arthur Miller.

Tickets to “A Centennial Salute to Composer Alex North” are $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid ID. It was only just yesterday that Paramount (via Marshall on Twitter) moved the film’s release date ahead by one day to Thursday July 1st. The new rating by the MPAA will help M. Night Shyamalan’s film substantially at the box office on the July 4th holiday weekend.

I’m such a huge fan of James Horner and his film scores. I have ever since sitting in the theater and hearing those loud trumpets come blaring through the screen. Beginning with the music from BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS thru STAR TREK II: WRATH OF KHAN onto ALIENS and finally his Oscar-winning score TITANIC.

Synopsis:

In Columbia Pictures’ remake of the 1984 film, THE KARATE KID, 12-year-old Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) could’ve been the most popular kid in Detroit, but his mother’s (Taraji P. Henson) latest career move has landed him in China. Dre immediately falls for his classmate Mei Ying – and the feeling is mutual – but cultural differences make such a friendship impossible. Even worse, Dre’s feelings make an enemy of the class bully, Cheng. In the land of kung fu, Dre knows only a little karate, and Cheng puts “the karate kid” on the floor with ease. With no friends in a strange land, Dre has nowhere to turn but maintenance man Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), who is secretly a master of kung fu. As Han teaches Dre that kung fu is not about punches and parries, but maturity and calm, Dre realizes that facing down the bullies will be the fight of his life.

It pales by comparison to the original and Mr Miyagi’s infamous ”Wax on….wax off.” Rated PG for bullying, martial arts action, violence, and some mild language, THE KARATE KID opens nationwide Friday, June 11th.

Paramount Pictures has put plans into full gear to get the word out for M. Night Shyamalan’s THE LAST AIRBENDER. As you can see below, producer Frank Marshall recently tweeted about a “massive AIRBENDER domestic and international marketing meeting,” along with a picture.

It’s an interesting sneak peek at the massive undertaking to build these sets on the East Coast of the U.S. As usual, I love to hear from M. Night. Air, Water, Earth, Fire. Aang (Noah Ringer) discovers he is the lone Avatar with the power to manipulate all four elements. Based on the hugely successful Nickelodeon animated TV series, the live-action feature film THE LAST AIRBENDER is the opening chapter in Aang’s struggle to survive.

I’ve been hearing a lot about this soundtrack. The film itself I’m not exactly excited about. I’ve never been a Denzel Washington fan and while I like Gary Oldman, I get the feeling this is going to be another of his indistinct antagonists that, while better performed than most, feels like a rehash of every villain he’s played before. I do enjoy post-apocalyptic film but there doesn’t seem, judging by the media released, to be anything new or exciting about this flick. The main draw seemed, before I’d heard about the score, to be finding out what the deal was with the titular Book.

But, as one of my fellow Movie Geeks was twittering about how good the score was, my  curiosity  was piqued. When I discovered it was composed and produced by none other than Atticus Ross, I became officially excited.

I am listening to it right now and am not the least bit disappointed.

Atticus Ross, a name few of you are familiar with (I imagine), has a history with the Hughes, having scored several episodes of the TOUCHING EVIL TV series and making the music for their segment of NEW YORK, I LOVE YOU. If you know Ross from anything, it’s probably his longtime collaboration with Trent Reznor. Ross is credited on just about every Nine Inch Nails album made, so it can be said that he is as much a part of the industrial music icon as Reznor is. Given this, and the fact that he has worked with just about everybody, from Pink to Korn, it’s exciting to hear that he crafted a soundtrack to something as dark and epic as BOOK OF ELI.

And what a piece of work. What’s most surprising about this music is how very bleeding edge it is. Ross makes no apologies for his fixation on electronics; every song is at least graced by whirring, creeping noises that summon to mind the very images I imagine the film would present visually. It’s not lacking in grace; many of the songs are sweeping, powerful, and moving, but what’s truly impressive is how very deep the compositions are. Layers upon layers of varying samples and instruments all weaved together seamlessly. There’s much to be said for simplicity, but Ross is nothing if not a deft conjurer of appealing and appalling sound so here he brings that to the table in spades.

Listening closer, it is very difficult to grasp just how detailed and unnerving the work here is. Ross is extremely brave, utilizing electronic noise and booming symphonic awe in equal doses. Jonny Greenwood did something close to this in THERE WILL BE BLOOD, but he was constrained by a period setting. In the apocalyptic scenario of BOOK OF ELI, this eerie and haunting soundscape is perfect.

And I get the feeling this is going to end up being a heavily repeated score, because its bravado and intensity really makes it a joy to listen to. It grabs your attention and, unlike what I expected, stands out in a way that I seek in the best film scores. I cannot recommend this score enough. Thanks to Jeremy for bringing it to my attention.

Capturing the wonder of Lewis Carroll’s beloved “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” (1865) and “Through the Looking-Glass” (1871) with stunning, avant-garde visuals and the most charismatic characters in literary history.

I don’t want to toot my own horn here (who the hell am I kidding), but I have been spouting for years that the British rock band Muse would be the perfect candidate to begin writing scores for movies.   At the very least, and this has been a bone of contention with me for some time, the band should be heavily considered to provide a song for a James Bond entry.   Well, we’re not getting that, but it is looking like Muse will be providing the score for the upcoming CLASH OF THE TITANS remake.

This news was first whispered at back in September, when Muse lead singer Matt Bellamy mentioned on a KROQ show that he would be doing some work on the Louis Leterrier film.   At that time, Bellamy explained his frustration with working for film makers:

They’re difficult to work with…As soon as you go into the Hollywood world, you’re at the bottom of a very big pile.

Now, it appears, if tour schedules align properly, the band will be providing the score for CLASH OF THE TITANS.

CLASH OF THE TITANS is the first interesting offer we’ve had for film work. We’re definitely interested in writing for films at some point when we get a break from being on the road.

Those were Bellamy’s words to UK’s The Daily Star when asked about potential work in the film world.

Personally, I think this is awesome news.   While the music they provide for the film will, surely, be very different from the music they provide on their albums, Muse offers an amazing blend of rock, orchestra, and even a bit of opera into their music.   It’s no surprise they are featured on so many film’s soundtracks.   And, who knows?   This could put them one step closer to finally putting together a Bond song.   Keep your fingers crossed.
