Universal and Strike Entertainment are vying for the rights to ‘They Live’ in an effort to bring the 1988 sci-fi flick back for modern audiences. Here’s an idea… rent the original! Anyway, The rights are currently held by music biz entity Les Mougins and if the deal goes through, John Carpenter will serve as an executive producer. Carpenter directed the 1988 original, which tells the story of a struggling construction worker (played by Rowdy Roddy Piper) who finds a pair of sunglasses and discovers they allow him to see an alien invasion secretly taking place all around us. Roddy must now beat the clock to somehow stop the invasion from happening.

The original film is famous, in part, for a fight scene which is best summed up as follows:

The fight between Nada (Roddy Piper) and Frank (Keith David) was only supposed to last 20 seconds, but Piper and David decided to fight it out for real, only faking the hits to the face and groin. They rehearsed the fight for three weeks. Carpenter was so impressed he kept the 5 minute and 20 second scene intact. — IMDB.com

J. Michael Straczynski, screenwriter to some of the biggest films, maybe writing a screenplay for the classic movie redux(?) Forbidden Planet. But, for die hard fans, this will not be a remake, but something no one has ever thought of before. So fans, let’s all keep an open mind on what looks to be a good film once the ideas are all together. The writer says that the 1954 version’s retro look was great for the film back then, but he realizes that audiences would appreciate a more modern look. So, fingers crossed this film should be something when it gets released.

Apparently, on May 8th, 2009, you will be able to go up to the box office of your local movie theater, slap down $12 bucks, and spout out, “Hey, I want a ticket for ‘Star Trek’ on the IMAX, biotch!!!” Then, after you get out of jail, you can go enjoy that movie on the IMAX.

Yes, JJ Abrams “reimagining” of the classic television series is getting converted to 70mm prints for projection on the 72ft X 53ft screen. ’Star Trek’ will show on IMAX screens across the nation followed shortly next summer by IMAX presentations of ‘Night at the Musem 2: Battle of the Smithsonian’, ‘Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’, and ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’. All of this IMAX hoopla is due to how well ‘The Dark Knight’ did this past summer.

What do you think about ‘Star Trek’ on the IMAX? Too many? Want more films on the IMAX? Let us know below!

Jeremy:

You could get a nosebleed thinking too hard about time travel movies. If John and Sarah Connor stop Judgment Day from happening in ‘Terminator 2′, than the war with the machine can’t happen, and Kyle Reese can’t go back in time to impregnate Sarah. If the bad guy dies while he’s young in ‘Timecop’, than he can’t grow old to wreak havoc on the future forcing JCVD to go back in time and stop him. There are millions of paradoxes created from time travel movies. Don’t even get me started on the continuity sins Heroes has committed with all of its time-travel shenanigans. ’Back to the Future II’ even had a scene where Doc Brown tried to explain what was happening in the film on a chalk board, and it still didn’t help.

Unfortunately, Nacho Vigalondo’s ‘Timecrimes’ doesn’t seem to be doing anything new in the subgenre of time travel movies. In it, Karra Elejalde plays Hector, a man who is staying with his wife on their country home. While looking at the wooded area surrounding the house one day, Hector notices a naked woman. Naturally, he hiked out into the woods to investigate. There, he gets attacked by a man dressed in a trench coat and who has pink bandages covering his head. Hector runs and seeks shelter in a laboratory atop the hill. There, he runs into Chico, played by writer/director, Vigalondo, a scientist who tell him to hide in a large contraption filled with some kind of liquid. Hector does so, only to emerge seconds later having been transported back in time one hour. Hilarity ensues.

I say that last bit facetiously, but one of the main problems with ‘Timecrimes’ is this weird sense of humor it has about it. There are several instances where unintentional laughter breaks any concentration you might have on the overall story. Maybe that was Vigalondo’s intentions to distract you from how convoluted and absolutely predictable the second half of the film gets.

And, the second half is not only that. It’s also tedious to sit through. After Hector goes back in time one hour, we spend about 45 minutes watching him set up everything we saw happen before he went back in time. It’s supposed to make you go “ah”, but it really makes you go “yeah, I saw that coming”.

It doesn’t help that Elejalde is a less-than-ideal leading man. I’m all about the atypical protagonist, but this story should at least have you caring whether or not he fixes everything and gets back to his wife. After about 20 minutes of watching him mess with his past self, whom the movie ingeniously refers to as “Hector 2″, I was ready for him to just touch the past self causing the graphic implosion that ended ‘Timecop’.

The film really picks back up again in the third act when some genuine surprises emerge. It’s still not all that intense as it should be, and there are still several scenes involving unnecessary comedy. However, the simple fact that Vigalondo incorporates some unpredictable twists into it makes up for all that. When ‘Timecrimes’ ends, you are left with several unanswered questions, but wrapping everything up nice and neat isn’t required. It would have been nice if Vigalondo had given us something more than was offered, but the ending of the film is the least of its problems.

What ‘Timecrimes’ has to offer is a rather intelligent brain-twister and little else. It could have given so much more. This is the kind of film that is prime for a Hollywood remake, and it looks as if David Cronenberg will be directing just that. I have no doubt he will bring something fresh to the table. The original, however, is a disappointment. It’s still better than most of the unoriginal garbage that comes out weekend after weekend, but ‘Timecrimes’ isn’t the end-all, be-all of time travel movies. Something a little more thrilling and a little less comical would have made for a rousing good time. This isn’t that.

[Overall: 2.5 stars out of 5]

Travis:

‘The Objective’ is the newest film in the slowly evolving new genre of reality-themed quasi-docuscary thriller films. Huh? Exactly. The film, directed by Daniel Myrick (Blair Witch Project), follows CIA Special Agent Keynes (Jonas Ball) as he leads a company of experienced special ops soldiers on a top secret mission into the mountains in Afghanistan. Keynes keeps his “objective” closely guarded, which leads the troops to question him along every step of the journey.

For three-quarters of the film, the story feels as though we [the audience] are watching from the point of view of an embedded journalist, traveling with the company of marines who are on a mission of which they have no knowledge. For them, the mission feels too risky but the orders are coming from beyond their commanding officer. Keynes maintains his focus on the mission, but is obviously nervous about the situation and the ultimate fate of his own and the troops who accompany him. Eventually, we learn the details of the mission as it begins to take on elements of the supernatural. Strange, unexplainable things begin occurring and the troops become restless and angry.

The first three-quarters of the film is relatively entertaining as a character-driven story, relying heavily on the mystery of what’s at stake and what exactly Keynes is after. There is a suspended sense of suspense as the troops are constantly alert and aware of the danger inherent with being exposed to terrorist fighters in the mountains of Afghanistan. As the supernatural elements of the story begin to unfold, the film becomes more interesting. The concept for the film is taken from historical and middle Eastern mythology, but the story takes a decidedly bizarre turn near the end that feels slightly out of touch with the rest of the film.

Generally speaking, ‘The Objective’ stays on course and offers an interesting foray away from the normal fare of supernatural horror films, benefiting from a more psychological approach to scare it’s audience. It’s clear that the Myrick is pulling a lot of experience from making ‘The Blair Witch Project’, but this film is far more professionally shot and doesn’t suffer from the shaky hand-held motion frenzy of ‘BWP’. ‘The Objective’ has an unconventional ending for a fairly conventional story.

[Overall: 3.25 stars out of 5]

“Nothing sorts out memories from ordinary moments. Later on they do claim remembrance when they show their scars. That face he had seen was to be the only peacetime image to survive the war. Had he really seen it? Or had he invented that tender moment to prop up the madness to come?”

French filmmaker Chris Marker’s 1962 short film, ‘La Jetee’, is a remarkable work of photography and story telling. Running just 28 minutes, the film is told almost entirely through still photography and voiceover narration. Even such, the world that Mark creates in this sci-fi tale is both hauntingly beautiful and epically tragic.

For anyone who has seen Terry Gilliam’s ‘12 Monkeys’, ‘La Jetee’ was essentially a precursor to that film. In ‘La Jetee’, World War III has ravage the planet, and inhabitants of a destroyed Paris live underground in the aftermath. There are scientists among them who research time travel. Time-travel experiments are done on a prisoner hoping to send the man back and forth in time to bring supplies to them. The prisoner has a recurring dream of an event he witnessed as a child, a man being shot at an airport terminal and a woman witnessing the shooting.

Unlike ‘12 Monkeys’, a somewhat overblown and sometimes quite silly film, ‘La Jetee’ tells the same story in a stark, unflinching manner and at a fourth of the time Gilliam’s film takes. It’s one of the most incredible science fictions stories ever put to film. Just the manner in which the story plays out is so innovative, it is a style that has rarely ever been seen since. Marker took hundreds of optically printed photographs and ran through them as a photomontage. There is only one, brief shot that was shot with a motion-picture camera.

‘La Jetee’ is more readily available than one would think a short, French film from the ’60s would be. Theaters will often run this in front of feature-length films. In fact, ‘La Jetee’ was first shown in theaters before Jean-Luc Godard’s ‘Alphaville’, another incredible science fiction film. ’La Jetee’ is shown from time to time on Turner Classic Movies (TCM) or on the Independent Film Channel (IFC). College courses on film and photgraphy alike will often show ‘La Jetee’. It is available on a Criterion Collection DVD that also includes another short film by Marker, ‘Sans Soleil’. This DVD is available on Region 1 and Region 2 discs.

The critiques of the film found on Rotten Tomatoes are almost universally positive. Some critics call the film a “masterpiece”, “powerful, haunting, unforgettable”, and “one of the best of all SF films.” It is Bryant Frazer of deep-focus.com who puts it best, though. In his review for the film, he states, “It’s no exaggeration, finally, to say that ‘La Jetee’ may represent film’s closest approach to poetry.”

‘La Jetee’ has been an inspiration on film for decades. ’Akai Megane’ (’The Red Spectacles’) is a Japanese film from 1987 directed by Mamoru Oshii (’Ghost in the Shell’, ‘Avalon’). Oshii has stated that ‘La Jetee’ is one of his favorite films, and ‘Akai Megane’ was inspired by Marker’s film. Gilliam’s 1995 film, ‘Twelve Monkeys’, is essentially a feature-film version of the same story, only the world has been ravaged by a virus instead of a global conflict.

In 1996, the MIT Press released ‘La Jetee’ in book for. In it, the film’s original photos were reproduced and the script, both in English and in French, was written out. The book was out of print until April of this year when Zone Books re-released it.

‘La Jetee’ is essential viewing for all fans of film. Even movie watchers who are not keen on the idea of science fiction will admire the work and poetry that went into making this film. It is truly one of the greatest science fiction films ever made.

From the mouth of director Bong Joon-ho himself, Universal Studios ahs apparently purchases the rights to the Korean monster masterpiece ‘The Host’ and they intend to remake the popular film with it’s American audience in mind. AKA, dumb it down and ruin it like most of their remakes? Well, hopefully not…

From SciFi.com: “Maybe three or four years down the line, if The Host [remake] comes out, and there’s a cool director who takes it on and makes it a real great film, then I’d be very happy,” Bong said in an interview, through a translator. “On the other hand, if it’s just crap, I think I’d be happy, too, because then people would be like, ‘Oh, yeah, Bong’s original was really good.’ So, for me, it’s a win-win situation. But Universal has a tradition of doing horror and creature films, so I anticipate that they will do a great film.”

Writer/Producer Frank Spotnitz apparently still has faith in the awesome TV series turned lame movie franchise. Currently Spotnitz is apparently working on some “hush hush” TV projects, but has said he would welcome a third ‘X-Files’ movie. Spotnitz hints around that December 2012 plays a significant role in the X-Files universe, but that’s a ways off in the future to release a third installment and it would be competing with Roland Emerich’s movie ‘2012′. After the somewhat luke-warm reception of the ‘X-Files: Fight the Future’ and the very disappointing follow-up ‘X-Files: I Want to Believe’, is there REALLY still a market for a third ‘X-Files’ movie?

J.J. Abrams and Paramount’s studio vice chairman Rob Moore were all over Europe last week promoting the studios reboot of Star Trek with a 25 minute preview….Up above is WAMG’s early first look at the newest trailer. The best bit of casting is Simon Pegg as Scotty - brilliant!

Nikki Finke, over at DHD, stated that “on Wednesday afternoon, the studio is unveiling this same 25 minutes of the movie at a private screening on the lot for selected opinion-makers. A revitalized Star Trek would give Brad Grey and Rob Moore a 3rd big new franchise in addition to Transformers and G.I. Joe. No other studio can boast that right now. Will the Paramount pinheads have the last laugh?” The Trekker in me got goosebumps just from hearing the original sound effects at the end of this cool trailer!

We will probably be forced to remove these at the request of Warner Bros (every other site has had to do so), but catch ‘em while you still can.

Some wicked designs, indeed. And for those of you wondering, the one that looks like the old school Schwarzenegger Terminator was identified as a T-600, a downgraded model from the T-800 seen in the first three films. The other extremely cool concept is the tall Harvester, which is shown standing next to a regular sized Terminator. That thing is huge and pretty wicked if you ask me. Of course, these are all just concept drawings, so there is a chance that some of these designs may not make it into the film — but that won’t stop us from oogling them a bit.

Moto-Terminator?

I found this comment very amusing …

The first things which bothered me were from the teaser. That huge t-01 “hiding” underwater. How in the fuck is that 11 ft tall 10 ft wide robot submerged in waist deep water in a sewer…why does it wait to jump out at such an opportune time to “scare” everyone…musn’t they have had to walk on top of it heading in that direction? Did its robot programming tell itself to go into a sewer and wait for humans…and hide? It’s a fucking tank precticly. Rediculous. Terminator Motorcycles? wtf is this shit…dumbest idea ever. This isn’t transformers you douche bag. 8 ft tall “infiltrator” bots with massive guns…oooh yeah very good for infiltrating unoticed…if you’re gonna go all stupid with the original idea of the t-600 at least get proper sound design for the minigun! and if i see more then 1 crushed skull in this film i swear to god i’ll infiltrate McG’s office and punch him in his McChin..sigh, very original. if its PG13 god help us all. - rememberface-

Amid all the hoopla surrounding this flick, what do you guys have to say?

Are aliens going to land? Is a meteor gonna hit the earth? Is McDonald’s gonna bring back the McHero? These are the questions people have been asking pertaining to the year 2012. That’s the year the Mayana calendar ends, so there’s gotta be some cataclysmic event scheduled, right?

Roland Emmerich seems to think so. So much, in fact, that he’s made, yet another, film about events that have global repercussions. ‘2012′ stars John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Danny Glover, Thandie Newton, and Oliver Platt as survivors wh must band together in order to save mankind.

Moviefone unveiled the teaser for ‘2012′ slated for a July 10th, 2009 release.

James Cameron just keeps making ‘em bigger and better. It appears, now, that his next film, ‘Avatar’, is going to get an IMAX 3D release on December 18, 2009 along with the film’s wide release. IMAX Corp. and 20th Century Fox made the announcement on Thursday.

“Our goal with ‘Avatar’ is to revolutionize live-action 3-D movie-making, and I have no doubt that it will look and sound incredible in Imax 3-D,” Cameron said. “The larger field of view and power surround sound of an Imax theater will completely immerse the audience in a way that cannot be experienced anywhere else.”

‘Avatar’ tells the story of an ex-marine who finds himself in the middle of a galactic civil war. It will be Cameron’s first feature film since 1997’s ‘Titanic’.

The film is nearly a year away. We should be getting a teaser trailer any day now, I would hope.

Alright so Planet of the Apes was not so much of a hit when it was released but that is not stopping this franchise from making a comeback. So get ready cause this new installment is not a sequel to the previous Burton film but is rather a REMAKE of the Conquest of the Apes. This movie will focus on Caesar , the ape who said no, the first ape with speech who started the events that led to a world where monkeys were on top and humans were dumb beasts. Now I’m sure that this idea will be implemented great because they have announced that the script was written by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver and they have been calling this new script Genesis: Apes. So I have never been a huge fan of Planet of the Apes and to really be honest I have never seen a single movie but hearing about this gets me a little interested.

Rookies is the first episode in The Clone Wars to be almost exclusively focused on the clones without any Jedi help or support, and the results are very good.

The episode unfolds on a tracking station that protects the space route to Kamino, which is the birth place and factory of the clone army of the Republic. The group of troopers manning the track station are fairly “green” and are bored with their post and want to be out on the fighting front; little do they know that it is about to come to them. Commander Cody and Captain Rex, two of the main clone fighters in the Star Wars universe, on currently in route as well to inspect the station as well, since it needs to be in top form due to its great importance.

When a routine meteor shower falls on the planet, with it comes a surprise in a droid drop pods housing droid commando’s a cool and new droid fighter to the SW universe. The droid commando’s overtake the base and claim a couple of the Clones lives before the remaining were able to escape through the ventilation systems. With the base under their control, the droids can keep the all clear signal to the Republic fleet while Grievous and his fleet attempt to sneak through the system and attack the droid factories on Kamino. Cody and Rex arrive shortly after the commandos have over taken the base and the fight to re-take the base begins.

The episode takes on plenty of action and kind of silly hi-jinks from here, but the biggest standout of the episode is the portrayal of death and battle among these men. This is the first episode since the Clone Wars movie to really get back to the brutality of that piece. There is no mercy with these clones being killed and with the added character interacting that we see and experience they aren’t just faceless sheep for the slaughter. I am not saying I frown upon this though, as it brings stakes to the proceedings, and it brings some emotional gravitas to show and that is very good.

The animation in this episode also seemed to really stand out and had some fantastic work in it, and I just wanted to send snaps to everyone involved as this episode really stood out.

Overall, Rookies, is another solid entry into The Clone Wars and is further cementing this film as the real deal for some time to come. This is a good first step for the Jedi less episodes as well, but I think we need to focus on a squad that gets lost in battle at some point to really hit the best story you can with the clones. If they even killed off the entire squad, it would make a hell of episode, but for now, there is already plenty of death and loss for these clones. Check this one out online, and I can’t wait to see what they do with an R2 centric episode tonight.
