Warren Beatty, Humphrey Bogart, Audrey Hepburn, Steve McQueen, Marilyn Monroe, Brad Pitt, Barbra Streisand, Elizabeth Taylor and the stars of the HARRY POTTER films are but a few of the subjects featured in the 165 photographs that will next grace the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Grand Lobby Gallery. Opening to the public on Thursday, September 16, “Up From the Vault: 85 Years of Treasures from the Warner Bros. Photo Lab” will run through December 12. Admission is free.

The exhibition includes a broad range of photographs, some famous and many extremely rare or unseen – from glamour portraits to set reference stills, from ad art and publicity photos to behind-the-scenes shots and scene stills. New prints of images taken in black-and-white and color, and in nearly every photographic format, from early 4×5 negatives to the latest high-resolution digital photos, will be on view.

“Up From the Vault” will feature some of the most iconic stars of the last nine decades, including Judy Garland, James Cagney, Joan Crawford, Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland, Marlon Brando, Natalie Wood, Vivien Leigh, Paul Newman, Robert Redford, Jane Fonda, Keanu Reeves, Denzel Washington and Heath Ledger. Shots taken on various sets by film legend and aspiring photographer James Dean are also included.

Classic and recent films will be represented, such as “Casablanca,” “Rebel without a Cause,” “A Streetcar Named Desire,” “A Clockwork Orange,” “Yankee Doodle Dandy,” “Batman Begins,” “Little Caesar,” “Cool Hand Luke,” “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?,” “A Star Is Born,” “Mildred Pierce,” “Blazing Saddles,” “Sergeant York,” “Gypsy,” “The Maltese Falcon,” “The Searchers,” “All the President’s Men,” “The Matrix,” “The Exorcist,” “Dog Day Afternoon,” “Ocean’s Eleven” and “Million Dollar Baby.”

The Warner Bros. Photo Lab originated in the early days of the studio, circa 1930, and remains the longest continuously operating studio photography department. Its purpose was, and still is, to process the unit photographers’ images into proofs and prints for publicity and advertising. Staffed by printmakers, archivists and digital designers, the Warner Bros. Photo Lab works with millions of original negatives, photographic prints and digital images owned and archived by Warner Bros. Studios, composing what is perhaps the most complete visual record of any studio’s film production and promotional activities that exists.

The exhibition is organized by the Academy in association with guest curators Greg Dyro and Leith Adams.

Also opening on September 16, in the Academy’s Fourth Floor Gallery, is “Ingmar Bergman: Truth and Lies.”

The world premiere exhibition will delve into the career and personal life of the legendary Swedish director. Original scripts, notebooks, film schedules, sketches, posters, photographs and other paper materials will complement items such as set models and costumes. Film projections and specially created montages will allow the visitor to explore the full range of Bergman’s work, from his earliest films to his major international successes. Admission is free.

Presented in collaboration with the Ingmar Bergman Foundation, Svensk Filmindustri, the Swedish Film Institute, the Swedish Institute, Swedish Television and the Royal Dramatic Theatre Stockholm.

The Academy’s galleries are located at 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills and are open Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and weekends, noon to 6 p.m. The galleries will be closed for the Thanksgiving Day holiday weekend (November 25 through 28).

When an old farmhouse is set ablaze by Kristen (Amber Heard), a distraught young woman, she is taken by police to the North Bend Psychiatric Hospital. She awakens in a special ward with four similarly unbalanced and wayward girls: Sarah, a flirty and sass-talking know it all; Iris, a sensitive and talented artist who tries to make her feel welcome; Emily, a reckless but playful outcast; and Zoey, who hides behind a childlike persona and her beloved stuffed bunny.

Kirsten’s therapist, Dr. Stringer (Jared Harris), tries to uncover the root cause of her breakdown, but despite his calm and understanding manner, she resists any attempts at help and rehabilitation.

Unfortunately, the hospital is not the sanctuary it seems to be. Kristen begins to have strange run-ins with a shadowy phantom who roams the halls when the ward is locked down at night. Persistent and inquisitive, she goes digging for information about former patients and soon becomes convinced that no one ever leaves the ward alive.

The Ward marks a resurgence in director John Carpenter’s celebrated stylistic mojo, with his trademark prowling camera, jump scares, and the sort of atmospherics that typified The Fog and Prince of Darkness.

Set in the sixties, the film’s tone and style have much in common with the works of one of horror’s great, under-recognized masters, Val Lewton, while also nodding in the direction of Samuel Fuller’s cult classic Shock Corridor. Led by previous Midnight Madness starlet Amber Heard, the titular lead from All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, Carpenter’s cast of locked-up bad girls brings the picture to life.

THE WARD is Carpenter’s return to form after a decade-long absence, further proof that he deserves the mainstream critical respect and recognition of an American auteur.

From Trailer Addict comes the latest tv spot for M. Night Shyamalan’s THE LAST AIRBENDER. If you haven’t noticed, Paramount Pictures has had a plethora of these spots running during the 2010 World Cup.

Producer Frank Marshall recently tweeted that “The movie is 103 minutes long” and “MOMO will make his first appearance on Monday!” On June 17th, Marshall also put out the word that “LAST AIRBENDER will be rated PG…” THE LAST AIRBENDER will be in theaters on July 1, 2010.

Yahoo! Movie has released a few, new pics for IRON MAN 2, set to hit theaters on May 7th.  I can’t believe it’s just a short month away, either.  These new pics offer a nice shot from the trailer of Iron Man looking menacingly behind him, evidently at someone whose ass is about to be handed to them, and two others.

I have all the faith in Jon Favreau’s direction on this film, but nothing on this Earth will convince me that cockatoo wasn’t Mickey Rourke’s idea.  The only thing I can think is maybe he’s trying out for a part in PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 5.

Anyway, IRON MAN 2: COCKATOO’S REVENGE hits theaters on May 7th.

All you fangirls can stop holding your breath from anticipation.  Entertainment Weekly has come to your ‘Twilight’ withdrawal rescue with these new still from ‘New Moon.’  There are also some explanations as to what the pics are all about and what we might be expecting from the new film.

Happy birthday, Bella! In this EW exclusive photo, the movie’s newly 18-year-old heroine has been thrown against a rose-covered table by her beloved, Edward. Readers will know his intentions were honorable: He was trying to protect Bella (and her paper cut!) from the vampire Jasper. ”The whole cast is reading the book and wanting to get it right,” says Weitz (center, with Stewart, assistant director Mike Topoozian, and makeup artist Robin Mathews). ”They want to deliver on the promise these books make to the readers.”

”I’m telling Bella not to be fearful of death. It’s inevitable and painless,” says Edi Gathegi, who returns in New Moon as the somewhat mysterious vampire Laurent, in this EW exclusive photo. ”He was bad in Twilight, but still had some compassion. Let’s just say he’s not conflicted anymore.”

One of director Weitz’s creative challenges is Edward’s long absence in the novel: ”Rob was the first guy to say to me, ‘You know, you don’t really need to have too much of me in this film.’ I don’t want him too present, so his apparition will be a subtle, flitting effect — clearly a reflection of Bella’s will and desire to see him.”

‘The Twilight Saga: New Moon’ is set for release on November 20th.

Tim Burton’s next film is the 3D adaptation of ‘Alice in Wonderland,’ and, up until now, we haven’t seen a whole lot from it.   Today, we bring you these samples of concept art courtesy of Russian film site Filmz.ru.   We also present to you a still from the film that we haven’t noticed until now.

These pieces of art, while not as Burton-esque as you might expect, are, nonetheless, stunning to look at.   Can’t wait to see some of the vibrant, final shots from the film.

The film stars Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Michael Sheen, Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman, Stephen Fry, Crispin Glover, and Christopher Lee.     ‘Alice in Wonderland’ comes out on IMAX and in standard theaters on March 5th, 2010.

I guess considering a month ago I didn’t really know anything about Neill Blomkamp’s ‘District 9,’ I can’t really say the unveiling of information is either quick or slow.   However, I like what I’ve seen so far.   That teaser was incredible, and, today, we bring you these new photos.

Of course, if this film ends up being a hit for Blomkamp, the chances of him, along with Peter Jackson as producer, getting a ‘Halo’ film off the ground increase greatly.

Chances are we’ll see our first trailer for Robert Zemeckis’ next, motion capture film, ‘A Christmas Carol’ at the end of the month.   Word is it will debut in front of ‘Up.’   However, today we bring you this new pic featuring Jim Carrey in all his CGI glory.

The poster for this film didn’t impress me all that much, and neither does this first still, really.   I guess we’ll have to wait for some actual footage to whet our appetite.

For the past two days, I’ve had to read Twitter updates from one Devin Faraci, among others, about how much fun he was having on the set of ‘Dead of Night.’Ă‚   He was made up like a zombie.Ă‚   He was caked with mud.Ă‚   You know.Ă‚   Fun stuff.

Luckily for the rest of us, he brought back a gift.Ă‚   Above, you’ll see the first pic of Brandon Routh as Dylan Dog, the detective who fends off all kinds of nasty creatures including zombies, Draculas, Wolfman…s, etc.Ă‚   He’s holding a pretty sweet looking revolver on Sam Huntington, who is playing Marcus, his sidekick.Ă‚   Looks like there’s some kind of dispute between the two here.

‘Dead of Night,’ directed by Kevin Munroe (‘TMNT’), is currently shooting in New Orleans and is set for release later this year.

Warner Brothers has released 10 production stills from Guy Ritchie’s new adaptation on ‘Sherlock Holmes.’ Ă‚  The film, starring Robert Downey, Jr. as the violin-playing, pipe-smoking detective, and Jude Law, as Dr. Watson, will put the mystery-solving duo into high adventure. Ă‚  Judging from these still, it looks like there is going to be much more fighting than fans of the novels are generally used to.

How did this get past our radar?Ă‚   Evidently, ‘Universal Soldier: The Next Generation’ is happening, and the sequel stars Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren.Ă‚   How is this possible, you might ask.Ă‚   Didn’t Lundgren’s GR13/Andrew Scott become combine chum at the end of the original film?Ă‚   Well, ladies and gentlemen, I don’t know how it is happening, but logic can get thrown right out the damn window when it means Dolph is coming back into the fold.

The film is being directed by John Hyams, son of Peter (‘Timecop,’ ‘Sudden Death,’ and ‘End of Days’), who is serving as cinematographer on the film.Ă‚   From what we see here, this film looks to be good and violent, just like any good JCVD or Dolph movie should.

Are shirtless and ripped Native Americans your thing? Ă‚  Well have at it. Ă‚  Above, you will find a picture of (left to right) Alex Meraz, Chaske Spencer, Alex Meraz, Bronso Pelletier, and Kiowa Gordon who make up the Wolf Pack in the new ‘Twilight Saga’ film, ‘New Moon.’

The four actors joinĂ‚  Taylor Lautner, who returns as Jacob Black. Ă‚  The film’s story tells of Black growing closer to Bella (Kristen Stewart) after her vampire boyfriend, Edward (Robert Pattinson), runs off.

The film has been shooting in Vancouver for the past several weeks, a location that makes wearing little to nothing a difficult shoot.

“It’s not pleasant for the actors,” says director Chris Weitz. “But they have all been good-natured. They show up on location in drenching, cold rain, and I say, ‘OK, off with the robes.’ ”

‘New Moon’ comes out on November 20th. Ă‚  Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna go do 800 crunches and tan.

For those of you expecting to see the first teaser trailer for Rob Zombie’s ‘Halloween’ follow-up this past weekend in front of ‘Crank: High Voltage,’ I only say, “You should’a moved to the coast.”Ă‚   That teaser was in front of prints that were only shipped to New York and Los Angeles.Ă‚   However, Entertainment Tonight came through for us.

In this video, we get the ET clip, but then we also get a slo-mo version of the shot where we see Michael’s new mask.

Personally, I’m not digging on the hood all that much.Ă‚   I absolutely love the shots of Michael in the shadows walking down the stairwell.Ă‚   Very reminiscent of the original ‘Halloween II.’

Word came down yesterday from Universal’s PR department (via Twitter, no less) that Sacha Baron Cohen’s new comedy, ‘Bruno,’ had been granted its R rating for “Pervasive strong and crude sexual content, graphic nudity and language.” This news comes a few weeks after the news that the MPAA had slapped the film with an NC-17.

There is no word yet on how much or what was cut out of the film in order to attain the R rating.Ă‚   However, Coming Soon.net was treated to some new stills from the film.Ă‚   In addition to the one above, we have three more.

The remake to George Romero’s ’73 ‘The Crazies’ is one of those rare instances where I am actually glad they are remaking it.Ă‚   Romero’s original is creepy and very good, but it is not a perfect film by a long shot.Ă‚   It’s the type of film whose story, I’m sure, will benefit greatly with an update.

Today, we bring you the first, official still from the film.Ă‚   It features star Timothy Olyphant looking beat up and worried.

That right there is a hero shot if ever I saw one.Ă‚   Today, Ethelmae’s Blog, which, from what I hear, is the official blog of ‘The Expendables,’ released the first, official pics of the new awesomness from Sly Stallone.

That pic above is just a sampling of a much larger image.Ă‚   Check that, and the others out right here:

That second pic of Stallone and Statham just makes me want to end the world as soon as this film comes out, because there will be nothing greater afterwards.Ă‚   Statham even holds a Nikon menacingly, and I don’t know how.

Somehow, it slipped through my brain patterns that Steve Austin was even in this film, and you see him right there above jumping from an explosion hand-in-hand with Eric Roberts.Ă‚   Roberts is looking very Vince McMahon-ish, by the way.Ă‚   Strange.

‘The Expendables’ comes out on April 23rd, 2010.Ă‚   The world ends April 24th.

Filming wrapped last week on Rob Zombie’s sequel to ‘Halloween,’ and, as a gift to all us fans (and a curse to those who aren’t, I guess), he has released this first, official look at Michael Myers, new mask and all.

Check it out:

Not really sure what to make of this mask.Ă‚   Since they are revealing it this early in post-production, I’m assuming this is one of the masks we will be seeing a lot of throughout the film.Ă‚   However, this looks like something that should have been kept under wraps until we see it at the end of the film.

Of course, that could still be the case, and Zombie just decided to release it to the public early.Ă‚   Either way, we will find out for sure on August 28th when ‘H2′ comes out.Ă‚   And, be sure to check out ‘Crank: High Voltage’ this coming weekend where the first trailer for ‘H2′ is slated to debut.

On his own blog, director Richard Kelly has put up some updates on how his next film, ‘The Box,’ is progressing.

Here are his most recent updates:

• WB is releasing the film on October 30, 2009. The release date has been shuffling around a bit, but this is common with studios, and everyone feels like this is the best date for the film.
• The film is completely finished. Principal photography was completed in March 2008, and it was officially delivered to WB right before Christmas 2008. A March 2009 release was briefly considered, but a Fall 2009 release was always a better fit.
• We shot in Massachusetts and Virginia. The film takes place predominantly in Virginia, 1976.
• The running time is 1 hour 55 minutes long including end credits.
• The film was digitally photographed using the Panavision Genesis camera. In my audio commentary on Tony Scott’s Domino, I mentioned that I would never shoot a 1970s period piece using a digital camera. My position on this changed when I saw David Fincher’s extraordinary Zodiac. It can be done.
• There are more than 300 visual effects shots, which required eight months of post-production. The digital work-flow of the Genesis was essential to completing these visual effects properly.
• Win Butler, Regine Chassagne (of Arcade Fire) and Owen Pallett (Final Fantasy, frequent collaborator with Arcade Fire) recorded more than 80 minutes of score for the film.
• Here is a list of artists whose songs appear in the film: GRATEFUL DEAD, DEREK & THE DOMINOS, WILSON PICKETT, THE MARSHALL TUCKER BAND, SCOTT WALKER
• The official website for the film is www.thebox-movie.com – it will unveil sometime this summer.
• This is my most personal film to date, and I’m very proud of how it turned out.

I love it when one piece of new information unfolds a whole slew of new stuff. Ă‚  So it goes with the new ‘H2′ still Rob Zombie posted on his Myspace page. Ă‚  The latest pic is this one right here:

That is evidently the silhouette of one Michael Myers as he stalks the streets of Haddonfield searching for his sister, Laurie Strode. Ă‚  Not sure if he is carrying the mask in his hand or if he’s wearing a heavy coat, but it does look like he’s got more on than just the mechanic’s overalls.

Anyway, also looking on his Myspace, I came across these other stills and information from the film. Ă‚  

These first sets of pics are of Uncle Seymour Coffins, the local horror show host on Haddonfield Channel 18. Ă‚  Uncle Coffins has his own Myspace page, where there are pics of him at the 4th Annual Phantom Jam and a few advertisements for the Uncle Coffins’ Creature Double Feature. Ă‚

Evidently, the Phantom Jam plays a crucial role in the film. Ă‚  You should also note that that is not Bill Moseley behind the Uncle Coffins makeup. Ă‚  Moseley was originally cast in the role, but he had to drop out. Ă‚  The new actor is as yet unidentified.

Also on Zombie’s Myspace page is this pic of Laurie Strode during her visit to Haddonfield Memorial Hospital. Ă‚  As Zombie notes on the page, this is the best part of her stay, and things are about to take a turn for the worse.

Last but not least is this pic of actor Silas Weir Mitchell, who plays Chett Johns, a Michael Myers fanatic.

According to Zombie’s Myspace page, Chett JohnsĂ‚  was arrested outside a Dr. Loomis book signing. Apparently Chett was caught spray painting MICHAEL LIVES across a local Starbucks. Ă‚  

Whatever. Ă‚  All I know is I have got to get my hands on one of those t-shirts.
