We here at WAMG are massive fans of Kevin Smith. Out of all of us, I’m definitely the biggest. Don’t believe me? Here’s the last article I posted on this site – 37 REASONS (in a row) WHY KEVIN SMITH SHOULD PRESENT STUCK LIKE CHUCK. As the title suggests, it is a list of 37 reasons why the new label created by Smodcast Pictures & Phase 4 Films should release my no-budget directorial debut. While caked in self-promotion, the article is fairly light-hearted and actually does offer some insights into the world of indie film. The day after I posted it, I received an email from Phase 4 requesting a screener. Needless to say, I was ecstatic. I immediately sent a DVD their way and have been playing the waiting game since.

And with that bit of backstory established, we can move on to the meat of the article…

Tuesday March 20th marked the release of Kevin Smith’s new book TOUGH SH*T: LIFE ADVICE FROM A FAT LAZY SLOB WHO DID GOOD. Unlike his previous books, this one is not simply a collection of essays, blog posts or transcribed podcasts. TOUGH SH*T is a funny, inspiring and heartfelt autobiography from a man who is already known for being an open book. And with great books, come great signings. Smith is currently in the midst of a 6-city book tour that started in Ridgewood, New Jersey and ends in Chicago on March 30th. I caught up with him on Wednesday at his second stop, New York City.

I arrived at the Union Square Barnes & Noble around 4:20 pm; an ironic time for those who know Smith. The book signing was set to begin at 7 pm and the line was to start forming at 5. I waited on the line that was waiting to get in line. It was less than 30 seconds before I was in the middle of an insanely geeky but utterly fascinating conversation between the people in front and behind me. A bulk of our time was spent trying to guess from memory every Academy Award Best Picture Winner from THE ARTIST to WINGS. The game expanded as more people joined in. Yes, the people that show up to a Kevin Smith signing are just as nerdy as you assumed.

Eventually the time came for Kevin to take the stage. He started by saying there was a fine line between entertainer and being entertained, then read a tweet that someone in the room had sent out just moments earlier.

Waiting for @thatkevinsmith To speak at b&n in union square… If this sucks at least I can go visit the cats at Petco next door – @Snowtreds

Kevin then asked the audience if we wanted to do a straightforward book signing or mostly Q & A. We ended up with roughly 90 minutes of Q & A followed by a signing. I did not know there would be a Q & A, nor did I plan to write this article, so I unfortunately did not take any notes. However, here are some poorly paraphrased highlights I do remember:

Kevin likes that he doesn’t go the traditional route when making movies & that he doesn’t do what’s usually expected. In other words, he considers himself an “ass man” even when it comes to making movies.

Gayle King (“you know, Oprah’s best friend”) loves TOUGH SH*T & read a vulgar passage out loud to Kevin when he was at a morning show taping.

JERSEY GIRL will always have a special place in his heart, even if only because George Carlin loved his role & his experience on the film.

He doesn’t think his version of Green Hornet would not have translated well on the big screen.

Kevin likes to bond with his daughter Harley Quinn through the magic of song. More specifically, the song ‘Joseph Smith American Moses’ from THE BOOK OF MORMON. Their favorite part, “Joseph Smith, don’t f*ck the baby”

He also gave a brief rundown of the entire play while re-enacting a few moments. He basically called it the greatest piece of art man has ever created. And yes, it was awesome enough to warrant two bullet points.

While drunk on Pink Zinfandel, Kevin got a tattoo of the Mad Hatter because he is “always late.” When showing Scott Mosier afterwards, Scott reminded him that it is actually the White Rabbit who is always late.

He would love to see a remake of A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS but he is not the one to make it. Ironically, A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS is one of the Best Picture winners that all of us had trouble remembering during our game. Every time he mentioned the movie, our row started laughing.

He told a story about the first book signing he was part of at the Union Square Barnes & Noble. It was for John Pierson’s book SPIKE, MIKE, SLACKERS & DYKES. Prior to the signing, Michael Moore was talking about how he thought his career was over after CANADIAN BACON flopped. When Michael Moore was called on stage, the room went wild. Afterwards, Moore told Kevin & John that he thinks he might write a book. He witnessed the rebirth of Michael Moore at that signing.

Kevin got a bit teary-eyed when talking about his father & telling a great story about a special way he said good night to his parents. He also talked about how he would get pulled out of school most Wednesdays to go to the movies with his dad. He said these stories were in the book so I’ll leave it at that so you can read them yourself.

After being told time was up, Kevin took 2 more questions before launching into the signing. A B&N employee announced that to save time, everyone would get only 1 picture & 1 non-personalized signature on the book cover. Their timesaving techniques were futile though since Kevin loves chatting with his fans. It was hilarious seeing the look of panic on the employee faces when he took over a minute with just one person. The next went up with a cell phone in hand so Kevin could talk with someone they called. Just before it was my turn to walk over, someone told me that he is taking too long and starting with me they want everyone to keep their encounter brief.

Screw that.

I walked over to Kevin, shook his hand, posed for a picture and he signed my book. I was a mess of nerves until I started speaking and a wave of calmness washed over me. I let him know that 6 years ago he gave me some advice that always stuck with me and is probably the single biggest reason why I even attempted to make my first feature film. He raised his hand as if to give me a high-five. I went for it but instead he caught my hand and held it up like a sign of victory. For a man as verbose as Kevin, he didn’t have to say anything. I’m sure it is a sentiment he hears often but he seemed to genuinely appreciate how much he has inspired me. We then talked a bit about the film, reviews, casting and even touched on my festival experience. I had become THAT guy the people running the event feared most. Finally Kevin asked what my flick was called. I told him STUCK LIKE CHUCK. His eyes widened and he responded, “You’re the cat who did STUCK LIKE CHUCK!”

Holy shit. My jaw-dropped. I could barely give him a positive reply. I felt like Jaimie in JINGLE ALL THE WAY.

“He knows my film”

He said that he heard a little about SLC, mostly on Twitter, and he even saw that 37 Reasons article I posted. I was in complete disbelief. We started discussing the new distribution label and he let me in on how the selection process works. Before I left, I gave him a DVD screener along with some SLC promo materials, just in case. I thanked him again and walked away. At least I think I walked away. I may have floated or skipped. To be honest, I don’t really recall any of the trip from the stage to the front of the store.

It is not often that you get the opportunity to personally thank a celebrity for being a major influence on your life. Then again, most celebrities are not like Kevin Smith. And for those of you out there sick of reading my posts about how Kevin Smith has inspired me, TOUGH SH*T.

In 2005 I waited over 5 hours on line in Red Bank, NJ to meet Kevin Smith. Not only did he sign my merch but he also spent a good 30 seconds trying to carefully remove a price sticker from my DVD slipcover. It amazed me that he cared about something so insignificant but it also perfectly illustrated just how much he cares about his fans. This actually calmed my nerves enough to work up the courage to ask Kevin for advice. He offered up a nugget of wisdom that changed my life forever.

“Write about stuff that matters to you because it always winds up mattering to someone else. And write cheap.”

Those words have been firmly planted in the back of my head ever since. A few years later I began working on my first feature, a no-budget rom-com about college life called STUCK LIKE CHUCK. It played a few festivals, won some awards and received some rave reviews but never saw an official release. When Phase 4 Films & SModcast Pictures announced the creation of a “Kevin Smith Presents…” distribution label, I knew this was the opportunity I have been waiting for. I submitted SLC the day I read the announcement but with thousands of submissions to sift through, it couldn’t hurt to stand out. So without further ado, I give you the official trailer for STUCK LIKE CHUCK, followed by 37 reasons why Kevin Smith & Phase 4 should release it!

1. Simply put, SLC wouldn’t exist without Kevin Smith. That is not to say that I wouldn’t still be making movies but my first effort probably would have been much different.

2. While heavily influenced by Kevin Smith, SLC is not some second-rate CLERKS. ripoff. It is also not a film just for fans of Kevin Smith. It stands on its own.

3. That being said, there are enough View Askew references in the film to make a drinking game out of it.

4. $2,500. That was our total production cost and we proudly wear that budget on our sleeve. In a world of million-dollar “indies” we truly are the underdog.

5. I hope to inspire people to get off their ass and make a movie much like Kevin Smith has done for me. This would be a pretty damn good way to start.

6. My favorite part of screening SLC is the Q & A that follows. I am not quite the public speaker that Kevin is but I did get an A in Basic Speech Communications in college.

7. B-movie icon Lloyd Kaufman called SLC “The best two person conversation since Louis Malle’s MY DINNER WITH ANDRE.” This is probably because he has a hilarious cameo in the film but it just may be that this film is actually a modern masterpiece.

8. Speaking of cameos, I cannot officially confirm that Chris Elliott has a brilliant surprise cameo as the world’s worst film professor but why would I even bring it up if it wasn’t true?

9. SLC premiered at the 2009 SINY Film Festival & took home Audience Choice Comedy. Later that year, SLC inspired the creation of the Indie Spirit Award at the Orlando Film Festival. In 2010, the award was renamed the Jerry Cavallaro Indie Spirit Award.

10. I am an open book. I’m willing to reveal anything about myself, especially if it is informative or at least makes for a funny anecdote. My two specialties are stories about how to fail in the industry and how my own insecurity sabotages every chance I get of having sex.

11. Related to #10, I am in fact a virgin and this could possibly get me laid. But probably not.

12. Extremely rare for an indie film with such a low budget, SLC features 3 lead actors who can actually act. Our very own Jocelyn DeBoer has even gone on to become a rising star at UCB & CollegeHumor.

13. Similarly, we have a pretty damn good soundtrack featuring bands like Army of Freshman, Alex Goot, Sail By The Stars and the comedy stylings of Stuckey & Murray. All of the music is cleared & used with full permission of the owners.

14. Close to 8 hours of bonus material already exist for the film including 33 minutes of deleted scenes, a Christmas special & a very unique behind the scenes doc that actually runs longer than the film.

15. In addition to our badass trailer above, a series of promo videos also exist including this infomercial-style teaser:

16. I’m 23 years old. The same age Kevin Smith broke onto the scene with CLERKS. Coincidence?

17. While the film’s target audience is the 18-35 demographic, the film has done surprisingly well with older crowds. After one particularly strange screening, an elderly woman told me the film was reminiscent of when her husband was “courting” her. In case you were wondering, it never gets less weird watching old people laugh at blowjob jokes.

18. The flick is gender neutral. It has traditional rom-com elements but also a lot of raunchy & geeky humor, which makes for a perfect date movie. I like to refer to it as a chick flick for guys.

19. I am a press whore with a degree in shameless self-promotion and no discernible social life.

20. As much as I love press, the press seems to love SLC a little more. Sites like Latino Review, Hollywood.com, Twitch, Cinematical, FilmSnobbery, Movie Cynics & more have all praised the film

21. SLC nametag stickers & “jackoff sock” door hangers are a huge hit at film festivals and colleges. I also have a custom nametag costume to wear outside of screenings. EVERYONE loves taking pictures with a guy in a dumb costume

22. Unlike most indie comedies, this one is actually funny. No pretentiousness or self-indulgence. The goal is for the audience just to have fun with it.

23. Admit it; STUCK LIKE CHUCK is a damn catchy title.

24. Bobby Bless of MovieCynics.com said, “The film manages to outshine any romantic comedy you’ll see in theaters.” So let’s take it to theaters!

25. I’ve been working the same part time job for over 7 years and this would be a great reason to finally quit.

26. A black and white version exists (and looks pretty damn good) if they decide to push the CLERKS. connection.

27. I had lunch with Bob Hawk once and he said I reminded him of Kevin Smith. He probably doesn’t even remember me but I will never forget that comment.

28. All the money for SLC came out of my own pocket so there are no producers to deal with. I own all the rights.

29. I never expected to make much money on this film. I just want people to see it & this is probably the best chance it has to connect with the right audience.

30. I designed all of the novelty shirts Charlie & Rob wear in the film, which means they can be recreated and sold to adoring fans. Merchandising!

31. Speaking of fans, I have nearly 4,000 loyal Twitter followers and at least 10 of them are not porn spam bots.

32. I finished third at the Netflix Movie Watching World Championship by watching movies for 68 hours 21 minutes 31 seconds straight while in a glass house set up in Times Square. We each got to contribute a movie to the list and my pick was CLERKS.

33. A movie that uses Tina Fey as a metaphor for love & features lines such as “She definitely wants some Charlie inside her brown” deserves to be seen.

34. While the film plays perfectly fine to an audience of one, it is best experienced with a large fun-loving crowd. I’ve always been a proponent of audience interaction. At my favorite screening so far, the audience joked around, yelled at the screen and even sang along to the catchy yet insanely raunchy musical number during the end credits.

35. I’ve been working my whole life for an opportunity like this and you can be damn sure that I will not mess it up.

36. I’m not ashamed to admit that I love JERSEY GIRL. Director’s Cut Blu-Ray please. Yes this is filler but give me a break; how could I end this on 36?

37. Because I’m a filmmaker who still fucks his art in a Denny’s bathroom.

Well there you have it. 37-ish solid reasons why Phase 4 & SModcast Pictures should distribute STUCK LIKE CHUCK. As you can tell from this list, Kevin Smith sort of already presents the film so why not make it official?

Please hit the share buttons below and send this post all over the web. Let’s see if we can get this in front of the right people or even Kevin himself. I promise to keep you all updated every step of the way. And for everyone still reading, thank you greatly for checking out what can only be classified as the most shameless display of self-promotion to ever grace this website. It truly does mean the world to me!

Kevin Smith just tweeted about his current and future blu-ray releases. He said that in November we are getting a ‘Chasing Amy’ blu-ray and the “unthinkable” release, this from Mr K. Smith:

Do I even need to tell you how badass a Clerks blu-ray will be? Well how about this:

Yes sir! So we don’t have a lot of details yet, but that is what we do have, the image above is a mock-up for the blu-ray which will probably look nothing like that, or maybe will look exactly like that. PS, you can get all of the currently released Blu-Rays on his website SIGNED for about 35 bucks each, that’s almost the same price you pay in stores without it being signed!

Before Kevin Smith week comes to a close, I thought it would be fun for me to take one more trip down memory lane. When Clerks II came out in theaters Bulletproof Records, the company behind its soundtrack, held a contest on Youtube. People had to create a Kevin Smith themed music video for the song “Think Fast†ť by All Too Much, which is on the soundtrack but not in the film. Of course, I jumped at the chance to enter this. Below is the video I created in about 4 days from concept to upload. Enjoy!

Some of the finer details are lost in the compressed Youtube video (the book he takes out is The Diary of Anne Frank) but I am still really happy with how it turned out. Let me know what you guys think…

“Hey, what’s all this talk about farting?†ť

Ă‚

‘Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back’ is the fifth film set in the View Askewniverse and it stars Jason Mewes and writer/director Kevin Smith as the title characters.

The plot goes a little something like this: Jay and Silent Bob find out that there is a movie being made from the comic they inspired, ‘Bluntman and Chronic,’ and that people on the “internet†ť have been talking shit about it. To make matters worse, the duo has never even seen a dime of royalties. So it’s off to Hollywood†¦

Along the way, lots of random shit happens. There’s a monkey. A jewel heist. Farts. A nun nearly gets her pussy eaten. Mark Hamill. Will Ferrell. Tracy Morgan as Pumpkin Escobar.

One of the best bits involves Ben Affleck and Matt Damon on the set of ‘Good Will Hunting 2: Hunting Season,’ which the title alone is good for a laugh but when you throw in a shot of Gus Van Sant counting piles of money, well, then it transcends funny and becomes something more like magic.Ă‚

This is the movie in a nutshell and it works, I think, whether or not you possess an encyclopedic knowledge of the Askewniverse. It’s just so fucking ridiculous. If you want to just sit back and laugh at crazy bullshit for an hour and a half, then throw this motherfucker in your DVD player. It’s not aiming at excellence, it’s aiming at fun and fun takes it in the balls repeatedly.

“Oh, what a lovely tea party.†ť

Hmm, on a side note, there is some really good work in this film by cinematographer Jamie Anderson. Widescreen is taken advantage of and used to full effect. Anderson has been working in film for a while, having DP’d films like ‘Piranha,’ ‘Grosse Pointe Blank’ and ‘Art School Confidential.’ This film is mostly spoof and Jamie’s work really puts that Hollywood glitter in every scene. Any comedic duo needs a straight man. As Silent Bob is the straight man to Jay, Jamie Anderson is the straight man to Kevin Smith.

“Boo Boo Kitty Fuck.†ť

Kevin Smith Week is now in full swing with some great posts about the man and his films. I decided to follow up my coverage of his Zack and Miri Make A Porno Q and A from last Thursday with a post about a video I recently put up on my website. In Fall 2005, I was lucky enough to meet Kevin Smith for the first time at a DVD signing he held at his store in Red Bank, NJ. I brought my camera along and decided to ask for a little interview. After waiting outside for over 5 hours, I was glad to find that the reason for the huge wait was that Kevin Smith truly cares about his fans. He took the time to talk and really connect with everyone who showed up, unlike some celebrities I’ve met who barely greet you and just push you along. He agreed to the interview and it actually lasted until I ran out of questions. He also gave some sound advice on filmmaking; advice that helped me when making Stuck Like Chuck. Last month I took a clip from my film and combined it with some of the interview footage from 2005. I altered the footage/audio and edited the video in a way to resemble the film that’s inspired a generation of filmmakers. Enjoy!

What is the one thing that will drive two best friends apart? A cute blond bi-sexual girl of course. One of my all time favorite View-Askew films is ‘Chasing Amy’, Kevin Smith’s third installment in the Jersey Trilogy and his most critically acclaimed film to date. ‘Chasing Amy’ was the winner of the Independent Spirit Award for best Screenplay andĂ‚ the launching pad for little known actressĂ‚ Joey Lauren Adams. Adam’s also received aĂ‚ Golden Globe nominationĂ‚ for her performance of Alyssa Jones, the previously mentioned bi-sexual blond. Kevin Smith is a film maker with an eye for talent, gathering a group that today wouldĂ‚ make upĂ‚ an A-list cast (Ben Affleck, Jason Lee, Matt Damon and Casey Affleck)Ă‚ to do a movie with a shoestring budget close to $250,000.

Ben Affleck and Jason Lee return, after fighting over Shannon Dougherty in ‘Mallrats’, as life long friends Holden McNeil and Banky Edwards in 1997′s ‘Chasing Amy’. McNeil (Affleck) and Edwards (Lee) are roommates and successful comic-book creators. Their latest endeavor is the story of Bluntman & Chronic, a tale ofĂ‚ two stoner superheroes, that have a strong resemblance to Jay and Silent Bob (Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith, himself) . If you haven’t picked up the books, you really should …they’re great! (and available at www.viewaskew.com).

While at a comic book convention, Holden notices an attractive artist on a Q&A panel, Alyssa Jones (Adams) creator of her own feminist comic ‘Idiosyncratic Routine’. One of my favorite scenes in the film happens at the convention, when Banky (Lee) is forced to defend his station in life: being an inker. Don’t even call him a tracer! Holden, Banky, Alyssa and black militant homosexual artist Hooper (Dwight Ewell)Ă‚ all meet for a drink following the convention. Holden is convinced he and Alyssa shared a moment, and he is infatuated with her.

It’s not until the next time Holden meets up with Alyssa at the Meow Mix bar that he realizes she plays for the other team.Ă‚ Holden catchesĂ‚ her playing a little tonsil hockey with a young blond. That’s when Banky realizes they are trying to pick up girls at a lesbian bar and smilesĂ‚ from ear to ear.Ă‚ Ă‚ This doesn’t stop Holden who eventually falls for Alyssa, and in turn,Ă‚ she falls for him.Ă‚ This forfeitsĂ‚ Alyssa’s membership in the she-woman man haters club.

The new romance also drives a wedge in the Bluntman & Chronic team.Ă‚ Banky does what any best friend would do…he digs up some dirt on Alyssa. Banky discovers her high school nickname was “fingercuffs”, coming from her early sexual awareness. you need to check out the DVD to decode the meaning of… “fingercuffs”. (DVD available at www.viewaskew.com)

Holden, who thought he was the one who converted Alyssa back to the “sausage side”, is unable to lookĂ‚ atĂ‚ a future with Alyssa, beingĂ‚ disgusted with her past sexual exploits. Following the break-up, we finally are treated toĂ‚ the firstĂ‚ appearance of Jay and Silent Bob. Bob , not so quietly, explains to Holden the concept and basis for the title of the film “Chasing Amy” or in this case Chasing Alyssa. Basically letting your one true love get away and then spend the rest of your life chasing after that feeling you once had. Holden, after a failed suggested threesome with Alyssa and…Banky?,Ă‚ pens a new graphic novel and apology called …yes you guessed it….”Chasing Amy” that chronicles his and Alyssa’s relationship culminating with a final panel “I’m Sorry Alyssa”.

Kevin Smith’s cannonball into the sexual revolution pool is a “10!” Chasing Amy is a wonderful story of how people react toĂ‚ each other’s sexuality.Ă‚ I have been to Red Bank, New Jersey (everyone should visit this cool small town). Every time I watch ‘Amy’ it’s like re-living the trip there, I can almost smell the pizza slices around the corner from the View Askew shop.Ă‚ Chasing Amy is the perfect end to a hilarious threesome of buddy movies (Clerks, Mallrats), and it will make you laugh, it will make some cry (not me!) and mostly it will make you think! You will also see the graduation of a fine director (Kevin Smith) into the icon he has become today. Make ‘Chasing Amy’ part of your DVD library and don’t let Amy be a stranger… re-visit her often.

…

Yesterday, Zack and Miri Make A Porno premiered in New York City and Kevin Smith was on hand for a question and answer session with the crowd afterwards. We will be posting reviews of the film next week so I won’t go into much detail about the flick. However, I will say that I think it is Kevin Smith’s funniest film and I absolutely loved it. It has the amazing dialogue of Clerks, the gross out humor of Mallrats and as much heart as Chasing Amy. It will definitely be a hit. And that’s all I’m going to say about the film.

I went to this screening with two goals in mind. The first was to see what I knew would be a great movie and the other was to score an interview with the man himself. I knew the second was a long shot but I was determined. I arrived at the theater about an hour early and was shocked to find no one there. Unfortunately a visit to the Box Office revealed the confirmation email listed the wrong movie theater. I rushed to the theater a few blocks away and found a huge line waiting for me.

I finally got into the theater and I sit in the worst possible seat. I was front row center. I had to look at an 80-degree angle to see the screen and the image was horribly distracting at such a close range. I didn’t care though since I knew I’d have the perfect seat for the Q and A portion. When Kevin finally came out, he settled about 4 ft away from me, which is where he stood most of the time. He immediately asked that the house lights be brought up, the spotlight be brought down and the emo music be turned off. He then told us that he made the mistake of having a big dinner just prior to coming to the theater so he had to take a “wicked shit†ť but he will hold it in for the next hour.

The first question was the always dreaded “will you hang out with us after the show?†ť but Kevin handled it in a polite way. At other events he has been more vocal about not wasting time on asking to hang out or read a script because he won’t do it. I knew that if I was going to ask for an interview, it would have to be as he was leaving the room. Without further ado, here is my rundown of most of the Q and A†¦broken up into two convenient sections.

Kevin on Zack And Miri Make A Porno
- The title came before the script but he has had the idea for a while and he’s been “researching this movie since I was 12†¦usually into a fucking gym sock†ť
- He has had most of the film in his head for years but it took him about one week to write the first draft when he finally decided to type it up.
- The film did in fact get the Greenlight based on the title alone. While discussing details on Clerks 2 with Harvey Weinstein, he mentioned the title when Harvey asked if he had any other ideas and Harvey told him it was a go.
- Seth Rogen helped Kevin cast many of the characters, which is why there are so many Judd Apatow regulars in the film. Kevin was a bit worried and asked Rogen “is this dude gonna put a hit out on me†ť for stealing his actors. Kevin finally met Apatow at the end of production and is pretty sure Apatow doesn’t want to kill him.
- In addition to writing Zack for Rogen, he wrote the role of Miri for Rosario Dawson. After working on Knocked Up and promoting it worldwide, Rogen was exhausted and asked to push the start date to January. Smith agreed but Rosario had to drop out because she was scheduled to shoot Eagle Eye in January. Left Miri-less, Smith got a list of about 6 actresses who might be willing to do the film and were free January-February. The first name was Elizabeth Banks and Rogen told Smith how perfect she would be for the part.
- If Rogen did not say yes, he would have put the script in the drawer and started working on something else.
- The name Zack comes from Kevin’s friend Zak Knutson, who played the Sexy Stud in Clerks 2. He also filmed the Behind the Scenes footage for Clerks 2 and Zack and Miri and the Sold Out: A Threevening With Kevin Smith documentary through his company, Chop Shop Entertainment.
- The name Miri comes from Jen Schwalbach’s friend Miri.
- There is a part of the film dedicated to making Star Whores, a porn parody of Star Wars. Smith did not get clearance from George Lucas and made a point that Zack refers to it as a parody in the film to cover his ass.
- Yes, Jason Mewes does have a scene of full frontal nudity. And yes, Kevin does have a great story regarding it. And no, I will not tell it because I could tell Kevin loves telling this story and he will definitely make a point to tell it at any upcoming Q and A’s. I will say this though; the usually brazen Mewes was hesitant to doing the nude scene because he had recently gotten engaged. She agreed so he disrobed.
- He chose Pittsburgh because he wanted to leave Jersey along with the View Askewniverse. Plus, it’s the last place in the world anyone would make porn.
- Kevin’s iPod was his music supervisor. He originally wanted to use the song “Maps†ť by the Yeah, Yeah, Yeah’s but they declined because they felt the song had been overplayed and they wanted to move past it. He replaced it with an unreleased song from Live, called Hold Me Up†ť, that he had wanted in Mallrats but they declined since they wanted it as their next single. They never released the song and to this day it has not been released, but it’s now in the film. It will not be on the soundtrack.
- The film is essentially about Kevin making Clerks†¦but with porn.
- Rogen convinced him to cast porn actors in some of the roles because they would be comfortable with the nudity and could bring some experience to the set.
- Kevin found Katie Morgan while watching porn on Youtube. He was watching clips from adult films but was looking for the acting in scenes between the sex. Since Youtube only shows clinical nudity, he was watching the pre-fuck scenes and thought Katie Morgan was a great actress.
- Kevin steals a lot of the conversations from real life and puts them in his films. One of my favorite scenes in Zack and Miri is a discussion of sex toys you can buy on Amazon that Kevin said he had with his wife one night.
- Justin Long’s deep voice in this film was not an original choice. Long had a cold causing him to sound congested but he played it up and turned it into a “porno voice†ť
- He does not understand the controversy surrounding the title and why people think it is a porn film. What is the last porno you heard of with the word porno in the title?
- Would rather release films without controversy. He thinks Dogma would have done better without people picketing and thinks the negative press against the title and baning of the posters does not help the film.
- He does not believe in Unrated Versions of movies. The version going in theaters is the version he intended. Don’t expect a Director’s Cut DVD but there will be plenty of deleted scenes in the special features that were deleted for other reasons.
– Many of you already know that Smith faced many problems in securing an R-rating for the film. He first needed to accept an NC-17 rating and then take it to appeals. The two main problems the MPAA had with the film was one quick shot that I will not ruin but many sites are reporting as the “NC-17 shot†ť and the other complaint was the amount of thrusting in one sex scene. In his defense, Kevin brought 2 arguments. The first is the “tug one out†ť argument. He said that if this was the early 80’s and he was a 13-year-old boy watching this film on his father’s Betamax, sure he would “tug one out.†ť However, nowadays porn is easily accessible online and there are much more erotic films that no kid would “tug one out†ť while watching this movie. His other defense referred to the “NC-17†ť shot and his argument was comparing it to something shown a stunt done in Jackass and then explaining how Jackass was worse since it is basically a documentary. The rating was overturned and he got his R. His very hard R.

Kevin on Filmmaking, Life and Other Randomness
- He has “porked the fuck up.†ť He has gained about 75 pounds since beginning production. He wasn’t on camera in the film so he figured it was ok to let himself go. After completing the film, he discovered a newfound love for smoking weed after toking up with Seth Rogen. He blames most of his weight gain on doing nothing but smoking, eating and watching TV for the last 5 or so months.
- The TV he is watching is a 103 inch television given to him by Panasonic. It is about 2 ft from the end of his bed. He likes to interact with the TV. He puts on the Blu-Ray of Live Free Or Die Hard and pauses it when on screen so he can compare his weight gain from then to now.
- Kevin has seen Watchmen twice. It is an amazing film that truly does the graphic novel justice. “You won’t be disappointed.†ť
- Someone asked him if after taking a shit, does he sit and wipe or stand and wipe. Not only did Kevin answer but he gave a reason followed by a hilarious story. He sits. He has to. (Warning: It gets pretty graphic from here on) When going to the bathroom, he likes to spread his ass cheeks on the side of the seat so that he has a “clear shot.†ť He always used to wipe from the front but when his daughter was born, the nurse told him to always wipe front to back so that you don’t get anything in your private area. That was an epiphany moment because he realized that’s why he always had “shit in my ball hair.†ť He stole the advice and used it in Jersey Girl. He then went into a story about how he recently went to the bathroom at Lazer Blazer, a DVD store in LA, which now houses Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash West. One night he went to the bathroom duringa poker game and it was an old toilet. It did not have a porcelain base; it was just a bowl jetting out from the wall with no support. After doing his business, he leaned forward to wipe. When doing so, the bowl cracked and he fell slightly forward. The contents of the bowl did not spill out but he could not stand up. His pants were resting around his ankles and he was still on the bowl. He decided to “Lethal Weapon 2 it†ť and he counted to 3 and leaped forward. He called Ron, the owner of the store into the bathroom. Ron looked at the mess he created and said, “no one has to know.†ť I love how Kevin decided to tell us anyway. And now I’m sharing it with all of you.
- Kevin has never met George Lucas and he actually turned down the opportunity. A while back Ben Affleck had Thanksgiving dinner at Steven Spielberg’s house and George Lucas showed up. On behalf of Kevin, Affleck asked if he had ever heard of Clerks. George Lucas’ response was “Death Star contractors, very funny†ť and that was it.
- He writes movies around dick and fart jokes because fucking and pooping are the two things that everyone in the world shares.
- In March or April, he hopes to shoot Red State. It is a “political horror movie†ť that is a total 180 from what he is used to and it will be his test to see if he is a real filmmaker. He also expressed some interest in working with Trevor Fehrman (Elias from Clerks 2) possibly in it.
- Sadly, the Clerks cartoon is DEAD. When the Weinstein’s split from Miramax/Disney, the rights to the cartoon didn’t make the leap. This means the long rumored straight to DVD cartoon movie will probably never happen.
- “Fuck film school”
- Go out and “make Clerks because it worked for me.†ť First time filmmakers should probably focus on dialogue driven films that are easy to shoot and then just go out an make it.
- Number one thing he learned about being a filmmaker: “Tell the story that you want to tell†ť
- He loves to write arguments but does not write them as he would realistically have them. In real life in an argument he would just say, “fuck you†ť and walk away. He crafts the arguments “you wish you were having†ť
- With Halloween coming up, it made sense for someone to bring up how Silent Bob is a blessing for any fat guy with a beard in need of a Halloween costume. Kevin agreed that it really is a simple costume and that every year at Comic Con, he is approached by “Silent Bob’s†ť who just walk up and stare at him.
- He will be in some upcoming episodes of Degrassi but Jason Mewes has more screen time.
- His nickname of Lunchbox comes from him being filled with food. When asked for a deeper meaning, Kevin replied that there is none. He is not clever enough to work on that many levels.
- If he were to direct Aquaman 2 (Entourage reference) there would be a lot of underwater farting. And if people asked him why, he would tell them because Aquaman eats dolphins.

As he was finishing up on the Aquaman question, Kevin quickly thanked us for coming and said he had to go. In somewhat of a rush, he made his way to the exit. This is a little out of character from him since all of the times I had seen him speak before, he would end with a nice wrap-up. He sometimes warns of only a few more questions and leisurely exits as he continually thanks the audience. I was jotting down his remarks to the last question as he said his goodbye. By the time I looked up he was about 10 feet away. I tried to get to him but it was too late. I’m curious as to what caused him to suddenly leave. Perhaps he had to take his “wicked shit†ť?
