Dropping on Netflix January 16 is director Joe Carnahan’s THE RIP, starring Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, Catalina Sandino Moreno & Kyle Chandler.

Upon discovering millions in cash in a derelict stash house, trust among a team of Miami cops begins to fray. As outside forces learn about the size of the seizure, everything is called into question — including who they can rely on.

Carnahan directed Narc and Copshop. Of his new film, he says, “I’ve always been a big fan of the cop film.” He also drew inspiration from the story of his “very dear friend,” a police officer in Miami, who taught Carnahan all about “rips” — a term used to describe when cops seize illegal weapons, drugs, or, as in The Rip, lots and lots of cash. Read more about the film over at TUDUM.

WAMG Attends Preview Of JAWS 50th Anniversary Exhibit At The Academy of Motion Pictures Museum

The Academy of Motion Pictures Museum in Los Angeles held a preview for their new exhibit, JAWS: The Exhibition, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the movie that has long been considered the first cinematic “blockbuster.” The one that started it all.

Directed by Oscar® winner Steven Spielberg, JAWS set the standard for edge-of-your-seat suspense, quickly becoming a cultural phenomenon and forever changing the movie industry 50 years ago on June 20, 1975. When the seaside community of Amity Island finds itself under attack by a dangerous great white shark, the town’s chief of police (Roy Scheider), a young marine biologist (Richard Dreyfuss), and a grizzled shark hunter (Robert Shaw) embark on a desperate quest to destroy the beast before it strikes again. Featuring John Williams’s unforgettable, pulse-racing score, Jaws, now five decades later, remains one of the most influential and gripping adventures in motion picture history.

Jaws: The Exhibition is the museum’s first large-scale exhibition dedicated to a single film, and the largest exhibition ever mounted showcasing Universal Pictures’ landmark summer blockbuster, which earned three Academy Awards® and was nominated for Best Picture. The exhibition celebrates the 50th anniversary of Steven Spielberg’s Jaws (1975) and will remain on view through July 26, 2026. The Academy Museum has also announced that in 2028, it will honor the legacy of Steven Spielberg and mount the first-ever retrospective exhibition dedicated to Spielberg’s era-defining career, providing visitors with insight into his creative process and bringing them closer than ever to his filmography.

The press members were treated to a full orchestra performing the iconic John Williams score from the movie, accompanied by clips and images from the film on the big screen.  And I must say, it was rather glorious. And that wasn’t even the best part. The man responsible for literally ALL of this, Steven Spielberg, was there to welcome us and officially open the exhibit.

“This exhibition is awesome,” said Spielberg. “Every room has the minutiae of how this picture came together and it proves how this motion picture industry is really, truly a collaborative art form. This is an art form that only survives by getting the best people in all the right positions. I am so proud to be part of it . . . and people have a chance between now and July to come here to the Academy Museum and live it for the first time.”

His remarks included funny stories about the production, and where he feared his career would end up if this little film of his flopped. It was endearing to say the least and made it all the more exciting to get to the exhibit and check out all the cool stuff. And it was VERY cool!

Who can forget the menacing baritone piano keys that are forever burned into the lexicon of American pop culture – the 2 notes that strike fear into anyone that has ever swam in the ocean. This fantastic exhibit has something for everyone – from interactive experiences to original props and photos for even the most die-hard fans of the movie.

Featuring more than 200 original objects and behind-the-scenes stories, the exhibit is the largest ever organized about Steven Spielberg’s JAWS. Items that have never been on display before, including ones from the personal collections of Steven Spielberg and AMBLIN, are displayed in a multi-gallery experience for all ages.

Fans of the film who live in or are visiting LA should not miss this exciting exhibit, which again will be on display until July 2026. A must see!

The exhibition follows the film’s narrative, taking visitors from the opening credits to the film’s gripping conclusion. Expanding on the three-act structure of the film, the story is told in six sections: “The Unseen Danger,” “Amity Island Welcomes You,” “Sunday at the Beach,” “The Shark’s Rampage,” “Adventure Ahead,” and “Into the Deep.” A seventh, concluding gallery explores the enduring impact of the film.

The exhibition includes:

 – Behind-the-scenes photos of Spielberg on set, the construction of the mechanical shark used in production, location scouting, and the cast and crew during filming, as well as Super 8 foot-age shot by Steven Spielberg during the making of Jaws

 – Handwritten and hand-sketched materials, including Steven Spielberg’s annotated script, storyboards and original concept illustrations of the shark by production designer Joe Alves, composer John Williams’s sheet music, and sketches of a shark rising from the depths by the artist behind the iconic Jaws poster image, Roger Kastel

 – Filming and editing equipment, including the Moviola machine used by the film’s editor Verna Fields, the original Jaws clapper board from the collection of Steven Spielberg, and the Panavision Underwater Camera used to shoot key scenes

 – Original props, including the prop head of Ben Gardner used for the film’s indelible “jump scare,” Quint’s fighting chair and the shark weathervane from his shack, Hooper’s shark cage, components of the Orca, and the “Beach Closed” sign

– Recreations of the “Amity Island Welcomes You” billboards, orange and white striped beach cabanas, and the shark chalkboard drawing featured during Quint’s introduction (remade for the Academy Museum by production designer Joe Alves)

Exhibition Photography for JAWS: The Exhibition, on Sunday, September 7, 2025 at the The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles.

 – Promotional items, from original theatrical release posters from around the world to innovative merchandise such as the Jaws “Feeding Time” cereal box, iron-on patches, toys, accessories and even products from Universal theme parks around the globe

 – Interactives, including opportunities to recreate the film’s dolly zoom effect, play John Williams’s two-note score that signals the shark’s approach, and operate a scale replica of the mechanical shark

The Academy Museum Store will launch an exclusive line of Jaws-inspired merchandise, including a commemorative 50th anniversary vinyl pressing of John Williams’s Oscar-winning film score in collaboration with Mondo, an exclusive 1975 variant screen printed poster, a Jaws Amity Island ringer tee, Jaws hoodie, “The Game of Jaws” 50th anniversary edition, and Jaws Amity Island billboard scaled prop replica.

Jaws: The Exhibition will be the museum’s fifth large-scale exhibition in its Marilyn and Jeffrey Katzenberg Gallery, following Hayao Miyazaki (2021–22), Regeneration: Black Cinema 1898–1971 (2022–23), John Waters: Pope of Trash (2023–24), and Color in Motion: Chromatic Explorations of Cinema . The exhibition’s advisory group comprises ocean conservationist and marine policy advocate Wendy Benchley; Associate Professor in the Division of Cinema and Media Studies at USC J.D. Connor; sound mixer Peter J. Devlin; and editor Terilyn A. Shropshire.

Watch The Trailer For A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE, From Academy Award Winner Kathryn Bigelow – Stars Idris Elba and Rebecca Ferguson

From Academy Award winning director Kathryn Bigelow comes A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE. Starring Idris Elba and Rebecca Ferguson, the movie is a minute-by-minute account of what the highest levels of government would do in the face of a nuclear attack on America.

A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE had it’s world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, premiered in competition and received an almost 13-minute ovation. In their review, Time Out says the “nuclear thriller will take your stress levels to DEFCON 1” while Indiewire writes its, “a movie that will ruin your day. You’re welcome.” The Hollywood Reporter says of the film’s music: “The tightly wound tension is maintained also by Volker Bertelmann’s propulsive score, which starts with ominous juddering groans and keeps shapeshifting throughout.”

A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE opens in select theaters Oct. 3 in the UK, globally Oct. 10, and on Netflix Oct. 24.

This trailer is pure perfection and and the narration from the great astronomer Carl Sagan was a brilliant touch.

Bigelow says about the film (Tudum):

“I grew up in an era when hiding under your school desk was considered the go-to protocol for surviving an atomic bomb. It seems absurd now — and it was — but at the time, the threat felt so immediate that such measures were taken seriously.

Today, the danger has only escalated. Multiple nations possess enough nuclear weapons to end civilization within minutes. And yet, there’s a kind of collective numbness — a quiet normalization of the unthinkable.

How can we call this “defense” when the inevitable outcome is total destruction?

I wanted to make a film that confronts this paradox — to explore the madness of a world that lives under the constant shadow of annihilation, yet rarely speaks of it.”

A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE also stars Gabriel Basso, Jared Harris, Tracy Letts, Anthony Ramos, Jonah Hauer-King, Moses Ingram, Greta Lee, Jason Clarke, Malachi Beasley, Brian Tee, Brittany O’Grady, Gbenga Akinnagbe, Willa Fitzgerald, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Kyle Allen, and Kaitlyn Dever.

SINNERS With Black American Sign Language (BASL) Debuts July 4 On Max In The U.S.

One of the best movies of 2025, SINNERS, begins streaming exclusively on HBO Max on July 4.

Max has announced that Warner Bros. Pictures’ movies will stream in Black American Sign Language (BASL) alongside the original version of the film in the U.S. on Friday. This groundbreaking release marks the first time a streaming platform will exclusively debut a film interpreted in BASL.

The release of SINNERS with BASL is a major step forward in accessibility, representation, and visibility in streaming. BASL is a distinct dialect of American Sign Language (ASL) with its own dynamic history and unique grammar, signing space, rhythm, facial expressions, and cultural nuances. For the first time, the Black Deaf community will have streaming access to a more immersive experience in their language. Max subscribers, who sign in ASL but are unfamiliar with this dialect, will also be able to follow along with this interpretation.

SINNERS with BASL is interpreted by Nakia Smith, an influential voice in the Black Deaf community, who delivers a powerful interpretation with cultural depth and linguistic richness that aligns with the film’s themes and historical timeline. Rosa Lee Timm, Director of Artistic Sign Language, is a renowned performance artist and uses her expertise in sign language performance and visual storytelling to ensure cultural authenticity. Timm has also directed ASL versions of Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” and “A Minecraft Movie,” exclusively available to stream on Max.

Max continues to set new standards in inclusive storytelling. By amplifying Black Deaf voices and honoring the culture, identity, and history at the heart of this powerful film, Max’s ongoing commitment to accessibility builds off a growing ASL program that includes accessible versions of HBO Original programming such as “The Last of Us” and Warner Bros. Pictures’ films like “Barbie” and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.”

“Accessibility within streaming is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Our goal at Max is to make these great stories accessible to all audiences in a way that is authentic to the content and the communities we serve,” said Naomi Waibel, SVP of Global Product Management at Warner Bros. Discovery. “SINNERS with Black American Sign Language is an example of how culturally nuanced access can enrich the viewing experience for our audiences.”

“With ASL” titles, including SINNERS, will be displayed on the Max app and indicated with key art featuring the sign language symbol.

Tom Cruise, Above and Beyond

June 20–August 17

Tom Cruise has been so central to our conception of Hollywood for so many decades that he’s more than a movie star—he encourages us to ask: what is it that makes a movie star? He was instilled with an undaunted charisma and confidence that became the metatext of his early star-making 1980s roles (from Risky Business and Top Gun to The Color of Money and Cocktail). Then, at the end of that decade, Cruise began to select parts that deftly subverted his golden-boy image, from his galvanizing, Oscar nominated role in Born on the Fourth of July to the homoerotic horror of Interview with the Vampire and the end-of-the-millennium one-two punch of Eyes Wide Shut and Magnolia—all movies that still drift through the cultural consciousness. He has long been a mainstay of elegantly constructed crowd-pleasers working with major directors (A Few Good Men, The Firm, Jerry Maguire, Minority Report), while in the 21st century Cruise has become increasingly dedicated to the physical spectacle of action cinema, producing and performing his own stunts in the Mission: Impossible films and beyond. Cruise’s entire captivating career speaks to his legacy as a singular movie star, and all the contradictions—of mystery and emotional transparency, of relatability and untouchability, of strength and vulnerability—that entails.

His appearance at the 2024 Olympics was AMAZING!

See It Big: 70mm! (2025)

Presented by MUBI

July 31–August 24

MoMI’s annual summer tradition returns with a thrilling selection of films screening in 70mm prints. With a larger frame size that captures more detail and light, 70mm offers the biggest, brightest image—the ideal film format for ambitious cinematic spectacle. The centerpiece remains 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), and there’s nowhere better in New York to watch Stanley Kubrick’s monolithic masterpiece than in the Sumner M. Redstone Theater, which was designed with an eye towards its space-age aesthetic. The series also includes Tom Cruise classics that feel the need for speed (and size), Top Gun (1986) and Days of Thunder (1990), and Alfred Hitchcock’s grand-scale suspense thriller North by Northwest (1959), a work of genius best experienced large and loud. And this year, with the Redstone Theater’s new major upgrade to Dolby Atmos sound, these spectacular films will also sound better than ever. Additional title to be announced.

See The MISSION:IMPOSSIBLE – Story and Spectacle Exhibition At Museum Of The Moving Image in NYC

With schools going on break and summer holidays in full swing, it’s also the summer movie season and so far, it’s been stellar. Box office numbers have been up, and people are going back to the cinemas in droves. We’ve seen in 2025 such juggernauts as A MINECRAFT MOVIE, LILO & STITCH, SINNERS … but one of our absolute favorites has been MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – THE FINAL RECKONING. Tom Cruise proves once again his movie star charisma brings audiences out to witness the spectacle. No one can entertain like he does. In her review, Cate Marquis says, “The stunt sequences are the major appeal of the series, and this one delivers. Thrilling, physics-defying sequences are abundant in this nearly three-hour long action thriller extravaganza.” Thus far, the film has grossed worldwide $506,816,000. (Box Office Mojo)
