1957 – A little boy was born 52 years ago on this day in Stockholm, Sweden named Dolph Lundgren. This little boy would grow up to become the muscle icon and action star we know today. Dolph has appeared in 39 films, including some currently in production, and has won our applause as He-Man, Capt. Ivan Drago in ROCKY IV and memorable roles in THE PUNISHER, SHOWDOWN IN LITTLE TOKYO, UNIVERSAL SOLDIER, JOHNNY MNEMONIC and a slew of other hard-hitting action films in which he was the star. Happy Birthday to you, Mr. Lundgren, and may you continue to grace our direct-toDVD shelves for years to come!

On April 3rd, 1961, 48 years ago, in Brooklyn, New York, Edward ReganĂ‚  Murphy was born. The world of comedy hasn’t been the same since. Say what you will about his latest movies, which incidentally I liked, but in the 1980′s, Eddie MurphyĂ‚  was a comedic god. You could tell instantly that you wereĂ‚  witnessing the birth of aĂ‚  natural funnymanĂ‚  starting withĂ‚  his stint on Saturday Night Live, particularly ‘Mr. Robinson’s Neighborhood.’

Next came Murphy’s hilarious standups in ‘Raw’ and ‘Delirious’, to his filmĂ‚  debut in ’48 Hours’Ă‚  followed by ‘Trading Places and ‘Beverly Hills Cop.’Ă‚  By thisĂ‚  time, Murphy’s popularity was at its zenith. It was truly something remarkable to have lived through and watched as it all happened. In the last decade, Murphy reinvented himself with family-friendly fare including ‘Doctor Doolittle’ and his clever voice-over work in the ‘Shrek’ franchise. The height of his fame came in 2006, whenĂ‚  Murphy heartfeltĂ‚  portrayal of James ThunderĂ‚  Early in ‘Dreamgirls’ received a much-deservedĂ‚  Oscar nod forĂ‚  Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role. How I would have loved toĂ‚  haveĂ‚  to seen him up at the podium with the Academy Award statue in his hand that night. Alas, it was not meant to be.

Ever the professional, Murphy keeps forging ahead.Ă‚  He hasĂ‚  2 films due out in 2009. The first, on June 12, ‘Imagine That’ -Ă‚  Murphy plays aĂ‚  financial executive who, along with aĂ‚  failing career, is invited into his daughter’s imaginary world, where solutions to his problems await.

The second is a Nicholas Cage produced film, ‘A Thousand Words’. An intriguing plot of an ever-babbling guy, Jack, who, after an ill-fatedĂ‚  meeting withĂ‚  a guruĂ‚  and hisĂ‚  magical Bohdi tree, discovers that the treeĂ‚  sheds one leaf for each wordĂ‚  he speaks. After one thousand words, Jack will die. This one is still in post-production, so no trailer as of yet.

As I first reported back in late February, Murphy is attached to star inĂ‚  Oscar Winning directorĂ‚  Bill Condon’s Richard Pryor’s biopic.Ă‚  CondonĂ‚  was shopping his script “Richard Pryor: Is It Something I Said?” to studios and independent distributors. As I said then, I still believe its Eddie’s best chance at another Oscar nomination and possible win.

So, as a devotedĂ‚  fan, this movie geek would like to wish Eddie a very Happy Birthday – what better wayĂ‚  than with theĂ‚  classic 80′sĂ‚  Murphy music video, “Party All The Time”. Cheers!

Today is the almighty Ram Man’s birthday! One of our contributing editors here at WeAreMovieGeeks.com and beloved St Louis Ram’s mascot, we want to wish Ram Man a very happy birthday! Oh, and the lovely lady standing next to him is Tag Along Toni (WAMG’s Mascot and biggest fan), his very beautiful wife.
