Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter & Under the Hood

March 24th has been slated for the DVD and Blu-Ray release of “Tales Of The Black Feighter†�, the animated “story within a story†� pirate comic that is being read within the pages of DC/Vertigo’s “Watchmen†� as the story unfolds of flawed and tragic human superheroes struggle to unravel a mystery that threatens their whole world.

The studio’s official release statement says;

“They’re in the book. And on this disc. From the director of Watchmen and 300 come two tales from the celebrated graphic novel that do not appear in the extraordinary Watchmen Theatrical Feature. Tales of the Black Freighter (featuring the voice of 300’s Gerard Butler) brings to strikingly animated life the novels richly layered story-within-a-story, a daring pirate saga whose turbulent events may mirror those in the Watchmen’s world. Stars from the Watchmen movie team in the amazing live-action/CGI Under the Hood, based on Nite Owl’s powerful first-hand account of how the hooded adventurers came into existence. The DVD will also include two special features, one on the Watchmen and a special first look at an upcoming Green Lantern feature.

“Watchmen†�, based on the groundbreaking graphic novel from Alan Moore and David Gibbons, hits theaters March 6th 2009.

Apparently Connor infiltrates the Terminator headquarters.

The Asian actress spotted in the Japanese Trailer for Terminator Salvation (Stephanie Jacobsen) is also in the Sarah Connor Chronicles series as Brian Austin Green’s girlfriend from the future.

It would only make sense to have the Notorious B.A.G in the flick as well, no?
To keep with the continuity of the show. One can only hope…

So, apparently the bros at Warner are going to release a slew of different special editions in an effort to get fanboys to buy, buy! They’re really going hard body with the marketing, offering a batpod replica, batman mask, joker mask, joker action figure, Ledger’s ashes … well no, not really, but I wouldn’t put it past them. � Best Buy is also aiding the cause by having their own special editions… Confused much? I’m with ya. � Whatever happened to just watching the movie? I understand fans are infatuated with the behind the scenes process, especially with an over inflated flick like this, there’s so much the fans want to know.

But isn’t this overkill? I mean, I’m a TDK fan as much as the next guy, but times are tough… Will purchasing multiple copies of the same product make me an authentic fan? Hardcore? Gotta admit, it’s a great marketing ploy on behalf of the studio. Fanboys are willing to purchase different variant covers for essentially the same comic book issue, why would a billion dollar grossing comic book movie be any different to them?

I guess my gripe isn’t so much with the 9 different versions of the film, but maybe it’s the fact that I’m coming to terms with being broke via a faltering economy.

So the question remains… who will be waiting on line at their local Best Buy, Midnight December 9th? Show of hands please. (Raises hand) Yes, I know I’m a tool.

Oh! And let’s not forget the the two – disc complete score of the film James Newton Howard and Hans Zimmer, also released on the 9th… Jeez how much is this all gonna cost? I’m just a fan, why are the warner ho’s molding me into an aficionado?

First comes the standard 1-disc edition, for those buyers who just don’t care about flashy extras or DVD art. There will be no bonus features on the one-disc, so buy carefully. True fans will be opting for the 2-disc set, which includes these delightful extras:

* Gotham Uncovered documentary
* Featurettes (Batman Tech: The Incredible Gadgets and Tools, Batman Unmasked: The Psychology of The Dark Knight)
* 6 episodes of Gotham Cable’s Premier News Program
* Galleries (The Joker Cards, Concept Art, Poster Art, Production Stills)
* Trailers and TV spots

And if that wasn’t enough, the 2-disc DVD art will feature alternate art under its cardboard sleeve — it seems the Joker savaged each and every one of them with markers and crayons (see gallery below).

There’s also a third edition the really hardcore among you will be standing in line for, and that’s the limited edition pictured above. It doesn’t come with additional features, but is secured in a steel DVD case and accompanied by a replica Batpod.

The squid is a means to an end.

Fans are getting up and arms about the Watchmen ending that is being prognosticated by early screening attendees and the man of the fanboy hour, � Zack Snyder. � I’m assuming that those who have any vested interest in this post have presumably read the graphic novel, so technically I’m not spoiling anything here.

I have posted an array of angry rants peppered with valid points from all across the blogosphere :

“No squid. Manhattan and Ozy build a device that mimics Manhattan’s power and Ozy uses it to blow up a bunch of cities and frames Manhattan. Manhattan realizes that this is best for the world and so when Rorschach storms out†� well we know what happens to him. Dan’s scream in the snow is a reaction to that. After that it wasn’t too clear on the final shots. They did not mention a kid going for a journal or disguised Dan and Laurie visiting Silk Spectre I.†�

The jury says†�

Second, I think the last bit in this article, which postulates that this ending may be a fake one, meant to mislead audiences might be accurate, because contradictory information HAS been released in the past few months. Patrick Wilson (the actor who plays Nite Owl II) has said that the ending is entirely faithful to the book, so there actually be a giant squid in this film after all.

One more thing: Ozymandias destroying various cities all over the world using ATOMIC ENERGY goes against his goal of PREVENTING nuclear holocaust. This ending sounds like a fake-out in my opinion.

But, if it looks like Manhattan’s doing, the US would be blamed for it, and WWIII would break out anyway. And that’s just the most obvious problem with this ending†�

I must be one the few “hardcore old-school†� fans who doesn’t care a bit about the squid and might actually prefer it be left out, provided the spirit of a “uniting threat†� (which is the really important part, as far as the theme and plot go) is left in. But was there really, truly any indication that the New Frontiersman possibly publishing Rorschach’s journal, thereby undoing everything that Veidt has worked so hard to accomplish is getting left out, too? This last thing is a major deal breaker for me. The “cliffhanger†� ending is, IMO, one of the greatest endings to any story/piece of literature. It was really powerful for me to be left eternally hanging, not knowing what might happen. I could have sworn that there was earlier confirmation that this was in. Also, why include the journal at all (I’ve seen it in shots from the movie} if you’re not going to do this? Does anyone have any idea what the deal is with this?

For those of you that care and actually read through this entire post – what do you think about all of this? Do you give a shit if the squid is in the film?

Personally, I never really liked the squid, felt it came out of left field within the context of the story, being so grounded in reality and all. I understand that developing science is a major component in the story, but the squid is a stretch and may be jarring to a modern day movie-goers. I don’t care how advance our CGI is, a squid is a fuckin’ squid, it’s going to look like something out of a cheesey b-rated sci-fi flick. No matter what the early indication, via trailer, is showing I still won’t judge the film until I see the end product myself. � We must all bear in mind that this is still another artist’s interpretation of a graphic novel, situations might and could be altered for a smoother transition to film.

My opinion, fuck the squid, Rorschach’s journal is a hundred times more integral to the novel, if this element is missing, then fans should start swinging fists.

Seth Rogen is looking to make a porno-based comedy for Showtime. Rogen and production partner Evan Goldberg are developing a comedy series for the pay cabler about three twentysomethings who learn about life and love while running a pornography shop.

Rogen and Goldberg will exec produce the as-yet untitled project.

Gee, I wonder what (or who) would inspire Rogen to develop an original concept such as this?

We will probably be forced to remove these at the request of Warner Bros (every other site has had to do so), but catch ‘em while you still can.

Some wicked designs, indeed. And for those of you wondering, the one that looks like the old school Schwarzenegger Terminator was identified as a T-600, a downgraded model from the T-800 seen in the first three films. The other extremely cool concept is the tall Harvester, which is shown standing next to a regular sized Terminator. That thing is huge and pretty wicked if you ask me. Of course, these are all just concept drawings, so there is a chance that some of these designs may not make it into the film — but that won’t stop us from oogling them a bit.

I found this comment very amusing …

The first things which bothered me were from the teaser. That huge t-01 “hiding” underwater. How in the fuck is that 11 ft tall 10 ft wide robot submerged in waist deep water in a sewer…why does it wait to jump out at such an opportune time to “scare” everyone…musn’t they have had to walk on top of it heading in that direction? Did its robot programming tell itself to go into a sewer and wait for humans…and hide? It’s a fucking tank precticly. Rediculous. Terminator Motorcycles? wtf is this shit…dumbest idea ever. This isn’t transformers you douche bag. 8 ft tall “infiltrator” bots with massive guns…oooh yeah very good for infiltrating unoticed…if you’re gonna go all stupid with the original idea of the t-600 at least get proper sound design for the minigun! and if i see more then 1 crushed skull in this film i swear to god i’ll infiltrate McG’s office and punch him in his McChin..sigh, very original. if its PG13 god help us all. – rememberface-
