We have seen the Keystone Cops, now music video director Benny Boom has given us the “Keystone Crooks in the hood” with his new film ‘Next Day Air’. Boom’s rookie feature film offers stars Donald Faison (Scrubs), Mike Epps (Hancock), Wood Harris (The Wire) and Mos Def (16 Blocks). The problem,  ’Next Day Air’ is a film suffering an identity crisis… it’s a comedy, that thinks its an action film, that wants to be a comedy. Confused, so was I as I exited this film.

‘Next Day Air’ tells the story of Leo Jackson (Faison), stoner delivery guy that works at his mom’s delivery service Next Day Air. After his mother (Debbie Allen of Fame) gives him the “come to Jesus” speech and threatens to fire him if he screws up again, Leo goes out and gets stoned just before delivering a ton of Grade A cocaine to a couple of idiotic criminals. Brody (Epps) and Guch (Harris), fresh off butchering a bank robbery where they stole the surveillance tapes instead of the money, now find themselves with $150,000 worth of drugs. They start dreaming of Escalades and fancy cribs instead of who do the drugs really belong to. That would be the Mexican couple across the hall. Jesus and Chita (Cisco Reyes & Yasmin Deliz) are the dealers for a Latino drug king known as Bodega (Emillo Rivera). Bodega informs Jesus and Chita that the drugs have been delivered and they either find them or he will kill them and their families. So Jesus must find the delivery guy and get the drugs back.

Brody tells Guch that his cousin, Shavoo (Omari Hardwick), can turn the stolen drugs into cash immediately. Shavoo meets the boys and checks out the buy as Bodega and his gang leave to find Leo. On their second attempt to hijack a Next day Air truck, they find Leo getting high. Bodega persuades Leo into taking them back to where he delivered the “package”. This is sure to end badly.

‘Next Day Air’ delivers on that… It ends badly. My biggest disappointment in this below average comedy is they reduced the best actor in the film to a glorified stand in. Mos Def plays Eric, a next day air driver who steals items from his truck to supplement his income. Def is funny and is totally misused in this film. The other tragic quality of this film is the convoluted writing that has you confused by the time the credits role. Boom who has directed videos for 50 cent and Ciara seems to be lost when jumping from 5 minutes to 90. ‘Next Day Air’ is the package that you don’t want showing up on your doorstep!

Rated RÂ (Language, Drugs and Sexual Content)

90 minutes

[Overall: 1 out of 5 Stars]

20th Century Fox was so concerned that the early leak of their “cash cow” film ‘X-Men Origins:Wolverine’ would reflect on the opening box office they be gan a major spin control promo campaign (Alternate Endings, Missing Footage, etc.). All was unneccesary as the film clawed its way (easily) to the number one spot at this weekends box office. X-Men Origins:Wolverine brought in a mutant figure of $87 million., falling $15 million  short of Marvel’s 08 smash ‘Iron Man’. An after though from the weekend would be the Matthew McConneghy romantic comedy ‘Ghost of Girlfriends Past’ which claimed the number 2 spot with $15 million. I’m sure alot were turn aways from sold out wolverine screenings. Here is how the rest of the top ten split the crumbs from last weekend:

Our hairy clawed mutant’s stay at the top won’t “live long or prosper” with the crew of the Starship Enterprise beaming ‘Star Trek’Â into theaters this weekend. Early reports on this website have it possibly being the first film of the summer to break 100 million. I guess we will find out when I see you at the theaters this weekend!

Beyonce’ and Ali Larter’s new spin on a fatal attraction, ‘Obsessed’ brought in $28.5 million and claimed the top spot at this weekend’s box office. Zac Efron’s second time around in highschool ’17 Again’ finished a distant second with $11 million. The suprise of the week came from Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr.’s biopic of Nathaniel Ayers, ‘The Soloist’, which only managed to scrape together $9.7 million (4th). The other two films that opened this weekend were the pugilist pic ‘Fighting’ with Tatum Channing ($11million) and Earthday epic ‘Earth’ ($8 million). Here is how number 6-10 finished out the weekend:

I think there is little hope of an “obsessive” repeat at the top spot next weekend. Matthew McConaughey’s romantic comedy ‘Ghost Of Girlfriends Past’ will open behind the sure number one film ‘X-Men Origins:Wolverine’. Hugh Jackman is a guarantee to claw his way to the top spot and may be held up there for weeks to come! It is sure to be a great week at the theater, I’ll see you there!

Earth… the final frontier… oops, wrong movie! No, this is the new film from Disney’s nature division called ‘Earth’. I was very apprehensive about this film after seeing the trailer a few months back. It seemed like Disney was just reusing footage from the BBC mini-series ‘Planet Earth’ to make a quick buck at the box office. After seeing the film, my opinion was slightly changed.

Yes, 70% of the footage in ‘Earth’ is taken right out of the ‘Planet Earth’ mini series, but they did change the narration of the film. Disney swapped out Sigourney Weaver for the great James Earl Jones. They also altered the dialog and information so that it would be entertaining for kids 7-17. Jones add some humor during some of the scenes with the monkeys and woodland ducks.

‘Earth’ concentrates on following three species of animals, Polar Bears, Elephants and Humpback Whales through a year on the planet. Earth shows the struggles they go through to find food, water and to evade predators to survive the year. This is Disney so the only animal in the film seen killing another one is the Great White Shark (seen above) leaping from the ocean with a seal in his mouth.

‘Earth’ is educational and entertaining for older kids. But in this critic’s opinion ‘Earth’ is a “cliff notes” version of the BBC mini-series ‘Planet Earth’. If you have seen the mini-series, you have seen everything in this film. If you haven’t seen ‘Planet Earth’ it airs regularly on the Discovery Channel and is available on DVD. But if you have grade school kids that you would have to chain to a chair to watch a 6 hour series, ‘Earth’ is just for you and your kids. ***Earth Day Alert*** If you see this film between April 22nd (Opening Day) and April 29th,  Disney will plant a tree for every ticket sold! I can beathe the new oxygen as I am writing this.

Rated G

Running Time: 90 minutes

[Overall: 2.75 stars out of 5]

Zac Efron and Matthew Perry’s new take on a classic Hollywood theme “17 Again” opened at number one this week with $23 million. The other two films opening this past weekend to mediocre numbers were Crank: High Voltage (6th w/ 6.9 million) and Russell Crowe’s thriller ‘State of Play’ that barely was able to beat the pop princess for #2 with $14 million. Here is how the rest of the top ten fared:

I am still suprised people haven’t figured out that ‘Observe And Report’ is a good film that they should see. Friday brings Beyonce’s new spin on a fatal attraction “Obsessed’ , Channing Tatum’s bare-knuckles slobber-knocker ‘Fighting’ , 80′s look film ‘The Informers’ and my pick for the top spot : Robert Downey’s new bio-pic ‘The Soloist’. We will have to see if the kids rule again at the box office or if the Adults decide to get out of the house. Either way I will see you at the movies!

Teen sensation Miley Cyrus a.k.a. Hannah Montana, went back to her roots in the new film ‘Hannah Montana: The Movie’ and found herself at the top spot at the box office. Little girls packed the theaters and brought in an opening weekend total of $34 million for the teen icon. Seth Rogan and the much anticipated film ‘Observe and Report’ opened to lukewarm response this weekend. The second mall-cop comedy managed to arrest over $11 million dollars from moviegoers this weekend and secure the #4 spot. This weekend’s disappointment ’Dragonball Evolution’, Anime transitioned to the big screen. Hard cord sci-fi fantasy fans could only scrape together $4.6 million (good enough for 8th place). Here is how the rest of this weekends films fared:

Next week will Hannah be able to “hold that note” and keep the top spot? Or will the public realize that they are missing out on a really good comedy and move Rogan and Observe and report up the charts. Jason Statham’s high-voltage sequel ‘Crank 2″ may have something to say about who claims the top spot. Zac Efrom’s ’17 Again’ and Russell Crowe’s ‘State of play’ also open this weekend. I will see you at the theater!

Looks to be a busy weekend at the theaters…See You There!

Nicholas Cage and his new thriller ‘Knowing’ were able to add up the digits and pull a $24 million dollar opening weekend and debut at #1 at the box office. ‘Knowing’ was able to dominate the other two films opening over the weekend, the “bro-mantic” comedy ‘I Love You Man’ and the Roberts/ Owens who-dunnit ‘Duplicity, which finished in second and third respectively. Watchmen continued it’s downward spiral to 5th and will probably fall from the top 10 next week. Here is how the competition stacked up for the weekend:

Knowing                                            $24,814,000

I Love You, Man                            $18,005,000

Duplicity                                           $14,402,000

Race To Witch Mountain            $13,004,000

Watchmen                                        $ 6,725,000

Last House On The Left                $ 5,921,000

Taken                                                  $ 4,100,000

Slumdog Millionaire                    $ 2,700,000

Madea Goes To Jail                       $ 2,510,000

Coraline                                             $ 2,143,000

We will have to see if Cage “Knows” how to stay on top or if Rudd and Segel can man-date their way to the top. There will also be some new players next weekend when the  ’Monsters vs. Aliens’ battle and the spooky ‘A Haunting in Conneticut’ open. John Cena will also be wrestling for respect with the latest WWE flick ’12 Rounds’ this weekend. I’m pulling for the Dreamworks slobberknocker and Monsters vs. Aliens to pull in a big number!

This one’s titled ‘The Little Fockers’ and it will bring back John Hamburg who wrote the previous two films. There is a new addition to the “family”, Peter Segal will be directing instead of Jay Roach. Segal became available when scheduling fell through on Get Smart . We will have to see what a new visionary will bring to the third installment in Universal’s biggest “cash cow”. Meet the Parents/Fockers has netted over $800 million worldwide. Film is in pre-production and has no release date as of yet.

Ram Man:

Tony Gilroy has brought us some of the best action films in the past few years (Bourne Trilogy, Armageddon) . Gilroy has re-team Clive Owen and Julia Roberts in a sassy corporate espionage who-done-it, ‘Duplicity’. Duplicity has an “Oceans” feel from the opening credits and delivers an entertaining story that will have you guessing the outcome right up to the closing credits.

Clive Owen and Julia Roberts play Ray Kovac and Claire Stenwick, spies that share a steamy past. The two hooked up on an assignment in Dubai where Claire slept with Ray, drugged him and stole some government secrets and then disappeared. The crazy couple then bump back into each other years later and decide to quit the spy business and go into business for themselves so they can retire to a life of luxury in Italy. They need to make one last big score to build the needed capital to retire. Ray and Claire enter the private sector of corporate espionage. Claire is a mole working for Howard Tully (Tom Wilkerson), a CEO of a personnel care company that is developing the next big skin creme. His competition Richard Garsith (Paul Giamatti), an over zealous CEO that will beg borrow and yes…steal to get ahead in the business. He has planted Claire in Tully’s company to steal the formula to the big secret product that they are about to unveil to the stockholders. The only thing is Ray and Claire plan to steal the formula for themselves and sell it to an overseas company for about $40 million.

I’m not going to give away any more of the twists and turns of the is film. Let me just say Duplicity has more layers than an onion and you won’t know what is happening until just before the house lights come on. There is a noticeable lack of any action. Duplicity is a sort of ‘Man from Uncle’ meets ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ type film. Duplicity keeps you entertained with witty banter between Owen and Roberts and an outstanding performance by Giamatti. If you are looking for Mission Impossible , Duplicity is not for you. But if you want an interesting romantic spy drama that will make you think then go check out duplicity and see if you can figure out who is conning who and why?

‘Duplicity’ [PG-13] opens today in theaters everywhere.

[Overall: 3.75 stars out of 5]

The former WWE star now known as Dwayne Johnson and his new Disney film ‘Race to Witch Mountain’ dethroned the Comic legends ‘The Watchmen’ for the top spot at the box office after only ONE WEEK. Race to Witch Mountain brought in over $24 million for the overall number one with Watchmen a distant second with $17 million. Thriller ‘Last House on the Left’ nearly missed number two bringing in an opening weekend total of $14 million. The loser of the week was the awful comedy ‘Miss March’ which open in tenth with a meager $2 million dollars, must have been all of Hef’s friends. Here is how the top 10 stacked up:

Race To Witch Mountain                                   $24,402,000

This weekend should see a further tumble by The Watchmen and Rock…”don’t get comfortable on top of your mountain”. Next weekend has the Nicolas Cage thriller ‘Knowing’ and the Clive Owen/Julia Robert spy hoax Duplicity opening. The big bang of the weekend should come from ‘IÂ Love You Man’ with Jason Siegel and Paul Rudd (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) the funniest film of 2009 and a sure contender for the top spot next week!

Marvel Studios have revised their release dates for the upcoming films ‘Thor’, ‘Captain America’ and ‘Avengers’. They have also confirmed the fourth installment of ‘Spider-Man’. Here is the latest release schedule to date:

Iron Man 2: May 7, 2010 (unchanged)

Spider-Man 4: May 6, 2011

The Avengers: May 4, 2012 (previously July 15, 2011)

Maybe with a less rushed shooting and production schedule, Marvel can continue the consistent high-quality of product they have been turning out (Iron Man, Hulk and Spider-Man).

Watchmen was as predicted the number one film at the box office over the weekend bringing in $55 million dollars. Watchmen also had the sixth highest opening for an R rated movie behind ‘the Matrix Reloaded, Passion of the Christ, Hannibal, Sex and the City and 300. Previous chart topper ‘Madea Goes To Jail’ finished a distant second with $8.5 million. Here is how the rest of the top ten finished:

We will see if the Watchmen have the satying power to retain the number one spot for a second week. The Rock aka Dwayne Johnson may have something to say about it when his new Disney family film ‘Race to Witch Mountain’ opens next week. There may also be a small rumble from the sex romp ‘Miss March’ , but I expect a repeat from ‘The Watchmen’!

Tyler Perry’s elderly alter ego is a hit at the box office for the second week in a row! ‘Madea Goes to Jail’ brought in $16.5 million, good enough for the top spot at the box office this weekend. Madea was able to “bitch-slap” those punk kids (Jonas Brothers) back to number 2. The Jonas Brothers concert film was only able to net $12.7 Â million over the weekend. The weekends big loser was video game turned feature film ‘Street Fighter:The legend of Chun-Li’ which only scraped together a measly $4.6 million and opened in 8th place. Slumdog saw an Oscar winning bump at the box office this past weekend soaring up to number 3 with $12 million in it’s 16th week of release! Here is how the rest of the top ten shook out:

Tyler Perry’s “Large and In-Charge” alter ego Madea took over the number one spot at the box office with a $41 million dollar opening week for ‘Madea Goes To Jail’. The sentence might have been manslaughter after Perry’s film took an axe to Friday the 13th and dropping it to 6th overall with $7.8 million. The other film opening this weekend was the new cheer-leading flick for the teens, ‘Fired Up’. It’s more like “fizzled Out’ after posting only $6 million and opening in 9th. The Big winner for the weekend at the box office and in Hollywood was ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ that jumped back into the top 5 with over $8 million for the weekend and snagging 8 Oscars on Sunday. Here is how the rest of the top ten stacked up:

After Slumdog taking all of the Oscar Gold Sunday look for a further rise in the box office standings next week. There will be some new blood to contend with next Friday… all the kids will be lining up for the new teeny bopper concert film ‘The Jonas Brothers 3D Concert’. Video Gamers will unite once again for the live film adaptation of ‘Street Fighter: Legend of Chun Li’. we will have to see if some one can slip one by Madea and claim the top spot or if the Gray-hair will rule a second week in a row. The stay at the top spot will be short lived either way with the first BIG HIT on the horizon ‘WATCHMEN’ opening March 6th!

Jason Voorhees and the classic remake ‘Friday The 13th’ manage to pack the theaters on that very day to bring in $42 million dollars and claim the number one spot at the box office this weekend. Chick flick ‘Confessions of a Shopaholic’ weren’t able to max their credit and only manage to pick up $15 million and finish fourth overall. Clive Owen and his spy thriller ‘The International’ miss the mark with a meger $10 million for its opening and finished seventh. Here is how the rest of the top ten stacked up:

Slow week next week at the theater could give some of the films like ‘Push’ , ‘Pink Panther 2′ and ‘the International’ an additional week in the top 10. Tyler Perry’s newest installment in his long running family series, ’Madea Goes To Jail’ is set to break-out next week and the high-school cheerleading ‘Fired Up’ is also ready to kick up some dirt in the top ten. Feels like to me..like its alot of filler for February and we are just waiting for March 6th and ….WATCHMEN!

Women rule port Feb. 6-8the box office this weekend with the romantic comedy ‘He’s Just Not That Into You’ raking in $27 million dollars to claim the top spot. The disappointment of the week was the futuristic action flick ‘Push’ , that only brought in $10 million and opened in sixth spot. Clint Eastwood and his mint condition ‘Gran Torino stayed in the top 10 for the weekend with $ 7 million and has netted over $120 million since it’s release nine weeks ago. Clive Owen’s new thriller ‘The International and the big baddie from Camp Crystal Lake, Jason, is slicing his way back into theaters in the re-make of Friday the 13Th. There is also another one for the ladies ‘Confessions of a Shopoholic’ with Isla Fisher is charging her way into theaters this weekend. I’m putting my money on the big guy with the machete!

Liam Neeson and his new action flick ‘Taken’ out Gunned Paul Blart: Mall Cop this weekend for the top spot at the box office. Taken brought in $24 million to claim the top spot. Mall Cop was feeling the heat from Elizabeth Banks and her suspense flick ‘The Uninvited that opened with $10.5 million, good enough for 3rd this weekend. As I predicted , this weekends loser was the awful ‘New In Town with Zellweger/Connick Jr opening with a disappointing $6 million in 8th place. Here is how the top ten fared:

Neeson’s spy thriller ‘Taken’ will have a tough time hanging on to the number one spot with the World’s Greatest Detective, Jacques Clouseau back on the job this weekend in Pink Panther 2. There is something for everyone opening this weekend… an early valentines day entry ‘He’s Just Not That In To You’ and for the kids ‘Coraline’ and the futuristic action flick  ’Push’. Should be a battle at the box office this weekend.

We will have to see if Paul Blart can make it a 3-peat at number one, if the Oscar buzz will keep Slumdog and Benjamin Button in the top ten or if the vampires of Underworld have any bite left. If not, I’m sure a pissed off Liam Neeson killing some kidnappers in ‘Taken’ or the romantic comedy ‘New in Town’ with Zellweger invading Minnesota or possibly a demented Elizabeth Banks in ‘The Uninvited’ would love to take the top spot away.

Mike Myers and his dreadful film ‘The Love Guru’ lead the way in this year’s Golden Raspberry Awards aka The Razzies with seven nominations. Guru was able to land worst film, actors (Myers, Troyer, Kingsley), actress (Jessica Alba). screenplay and director (Marco Schnabel). Other multiple nominations went to some other stinkers of 2008:

Hottie and the Nottie: Picture, Actress (Paris Hilton… no shocker there!), Director, Screenplay and On- Screen Couple (she hasn’t learned everyone has seen her sex tape… Stop Acting!).

Disaster Movie & Meet The Spartans:Picture, Supporting Actress, Director, Rip-off and Screenplay.

(Michelle don’t read any further)

The Happening: (YES!!!!!) Worst Picture, Actor, Director and Screenplay.

In The Name Of The King: A Dungeon Siege Tale: Picture, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Director and Screenplay.

The Love Guru: Picture, Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor (x2), Director, and Screenplay.

Razzie Regulars also getting nominations were Eddie Murphy for the horrid comedy Meet Dave and Larry the Cable Guy for ‘Witless Protection’.

Who’s not on the list. I personally would like to know who Toby Keith paid off to keep his 2 hour music video ‘Beer For My Horses’ off the list! What else was the worst of 2008? Check back with us on February 21st when the winners of the worst are announced.
