MANIAC Remake Screens at The Hi-Pointe Midnights this Weekend!

A couple of years ago the guys at Destroy the Brain.com showed, as part of their monthly Late Night Grindhouse midnight series, William Lustig’s 1980 MANIAC, a sleazy slice of cheapo urban grime starring the late, great, and sweaty Joe Spinell as a serial killer with a fetish for scalps that was remarkable for its groundbreaking gore effects by Tom Savini. This weekend (July 5th and 6th) they will be presenting the 2012 remake starring Elijah Wood, a much less greasy stand-in for Joe Spinell. I haven’t seen this new remake, but I’ve heard good things about it. The chief gimmick this time is that everything we see is from the eyes — or at least the mind —of Wood, a mannequin aficionado with a penchant for stalking and scalping young beauties so as to better adorn his lifeless companions. They’ve also relocated the film’s setting from Lustig’s distinctive NYC setting to contemporary L.A. I’m very excited to check out this new MANIAC and we’ll all have the opportunity when it’s screened midnights at St. Louis’ fabulous Hi-Pointe Theater (1005 McCausland Avenue) this Friday and Saturday (July 5th and 6th). The pre-show begins at 11:30.
