May 6, 1993 – Insp. Gary Gitchell (second from right), of the West Memphis Police Department, headed the investigation into the deaths of three West Memphis 8-year-olds. A police barrier was set up at the intersection of W. E. Catt Street and McAuley Drive West, which ends in a small cul-de-sac beyond which the bodies were found submerged in a creek leading to Ten Mile Bayou, the city’s main drainage canal. ”One of my officers found a tennis shoe and, being inquisitive, he just jumped in the water and felt one of them,” said Gitchell. According to police reports, the body of Michael Moore was found at 1:45 p.m. by Sgt. Mike Allen and Crittenden County juvenile officer Steve Jones. The second body was found by Detective Bryn Ridge some 27 feet away from the first just before 3, and the third body was found some 5 feet away from the second a few minutes later.
