THE HELP – The Blu Review

By  |

THE HELP is one of the most talked about films of the year, and for good reason… it is absolutely fantastic. That is why it is no shock that the Blu-Ray DVD Combo pack is such a delight.

Synopsis:

Based on one of the most talked about books in years and a #1 New York Times best-selling phenomenon, THE HELP stars Emma Stone (EASY A) as Skeeter, Academy Award®–nominated Viola Davis (DOUBT) as Aibileen and Octavia Spencer as Minny—three very different, extraordinary women in Mississippi during the 1960s, who build an unlikely friendship around a secret writing project that breaks societal rules and puts them all at risk. From their improbable alliance a remarkable sisterhood emerges, instilling all of them with the courage to transcend the lines that define them, and the realization that sometimes those lines are made to be crossed—even if it means bringing everyone in town face-to-face with the changing times. Deeply moving, filled with poignancy, humor and hope, THE HELP is a timeless and universal story about the ability to create change.

THE HELP is a touching, inspiring, and simply amazing film that shows how just a few people can truly make a difference in the world. The film in itself gets a 5 out of 5 from me.

AUDIO AND VISUAL:

The 1080p/AVC-encoded video transfer is simply delicious in this film. Mississippi really comes to life and pops off the screen! As for audio, the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track is simply divine. Sure, it’s not jam-packed with explosions and sound shattering audio, but it is crisp, clear, and really compliments the film.

BONUS FEATURES:

The thing I enjoy most about the blu-ray and dvd of THE HELP is that it didn’t over-saturate us with bonus features. Instead, it chose a few quality, interesting pieces to include and let them speak for themselves. Often times, it seems that movies are being released with a ton of bonus features, yet none of them are worth watching. This is simply not the case with THE HELP. If you enjoy the film, you will enjoy the bonus features!

DVD Bonus Features:

  • Two deleted scenes with introductions by Director Tate Taylor, including ‘A Senator’s Son’ and ‘Keep On Walkin’
  • “The Living Proof” music video by Mary J. Blige – I don’t know about you guys, but I am not a huge fan of music videos in the bonus features. I’d rather look up a music video that I wanted to watch online than pop in a disc just to watch it on my tv.

Exclusive Blu-ray Bonus Features:

    • The Making of “The Help:” From Friendship To Film – a nice mini documentary about the cast, how the film was made, and the heart and soul of Mississippi. Overall, it’s a fun watch!
    • In Their Own Words: A Tribute To The Maids Of Mississippi – an honest observation of life in the South from real-life maids, including director Tate Taylor’s childhood caretaker, Carol Lee. This was heartwarming to watch. A real treat after watching the film.
    • Three deleted scenes with introductions by Director Tate Taylor including ‘Humiliated,’ ‘A Book About Jackson’ and ‘Johnny’s Home’ (which is a Blu-ray exclusive)

OVERALL BLU-RAY COMBO PACK RATING: 4.5 out of 5 stars
