MYSTIC PIZZA – The Blu Review

How have I gone this long without seeing this movie??! I have to say, MYSTIC PIZZA might be worthy of updating the title to my favorites list!

Sisters Kat and Daisy, along with their friend Jojo, work at the local Mystic Pizza Parlor in Mystic Connecticut. Daisy dreams of leaving Mystic, Kat of going to Yale, and Jojo wants to take over the Mystic Pizza Parlor someday, and is running away from marrying her sweetheart. Between their futures and the men in their lives (Daisy meets a rich law school drop-out, Jojo has her marriage crazy boyfriend, and Kat falls for the architect that she babysits for), there is always something going on in Mystic!

This is a fantastic movie that translates well over time. The friendship between the characters is not overdone with cheese like most of the films of today. Julie Roberts really shines as Daisy, a misunderstood, carefree spirit that feels trapped in her hometown. Roberts is stunning, but still manages to show the depth of her character. Daisy knows that most people only see her looks, and she plays off of it because she thinks that beauty is all that she has to offer, but as the layers shed, we get to see that there truly is more than meets the eye. Lili Taylor as Jojo and Annabeth Gish as Kat are on an equal playing field with Roberts. Each actress was cast to fit their characters perfectly. I have no complaints when it comes to the acting in this film.

This story is easy for almost any girl to relate to. The three main characters are so diverse, and their problems are all so different, yet they are all very real, making them easy for the audience to connect to. I really enjoyed the small town aspect too! I grew up in a small town, and there was always that one eatery or hangout that we would go to, for pizza of course! I think everyone has that one special place that they like to go hang out or eat, and I can see why the town of Mystic would chose Mystic Pizza.

The blu-ray itself looks phenomenal for what it is (AVC-encoded 1.85:1 high-definition transfer). For a film to have been shot before high-def, they did a nice job making it look more clear. Sure, it’s not razor sharp, but it still looks great. If, however, you only buy blu-rays for all of the crazy-fun extras, you are going to be disappointed because the only extra that this offers is the trailer.

OVERALL RATING: 4.75 out of 5 stars

Nerdy, snarky horror lover with a campy undertone. Goonies never say die.
