PULP FICTION- An L.A. Crime Story

By  |

With today’s release of PULP FICTION on Blu-Ray, we thought it would be fun to take a quick look at the seedier side of L.A. crime films. From PULP FICTION to L.A. Confidential to Kiss Kiss Bang Bang… there is an undeniable fascination with the City Of Angels and gun totin’, action packed, thrilling films.

Here’s a look at just a few…

PULP FICTION

You won’t know the facts until you’ve seen the fiction.

Mobsters, fringe players, small-time criminals… 1994’s PULP FICTION is a snack pack of violence and ironic, witty humor. The film is a throwback to old crime novels and pulp magazines, staying true to their graphic violence and witty, sassy dialogue. These mobsters, criminals, and druggies cruise around L.A. taking care of business with their guns, running from their problems, or twisting the night away at Jack Rabbit Slim’s. Some call it a black comedy, some a neo-noir. However you classify it, one thing is clear… this film has been an inspiration to many filmmakers!

L.A. CONFIDENTIAL

Everything is suspect…everyone is for sale…and nothing is what it seems.

Based off of the 1990 novel of the same name (by James Ellroy), L.A. CONFIDENTIAL tells the story three officer’s caught up in a world of corruption, sex, drugs, prostitution, tabloid journalism, and good old fashioned pornography in the 1950’s. The three also investigate the a series of murders known as the “Night Owl Killings” which begin to reveal the corruption going on around them. Political leaders, sex, drugs, murder…

KISS KISS BANG BANG

Sex. Murder. Mystery. Welcome to the party.

Based partially off of the Brett Halliday Novel Bodies Are Where You Find Them, 2005’s KISS KISS BANG BANG is a tounge-in-cheek throwback to the classic film noir genre. Harry (Robert Downey Jr.) evades the police after a robbery, which he committed, in an audition for a movie. Thinking that he is an actor giving his audition, they choose him for the lead role and fly him to Hollywood. While working in the big city, he ends up back in a world filled with murder, kidnapping and lies. Who said the movie business was easy?

HEAT

An epic tale of crime and obsession and two men on opposite sides of the law.

Robert De Niro and Al Pacino head-to-head in a film… If that doesn’t scream L.A. crime movie, I don’t know what does! Pacino plays Lieutenant Vincent Hanna, LAPD. He is investigating an armored car heist when he learns of Neil McCauley’s (Robert De Niro) big robbery plans. But wait kids, that’s not all! Add affairs, a serial killer, prostitutes, and heck… let’s give these guys guns! HEAT is a perfect marriage between crime and two bad-ass actors!
