SYNOPSIS:
In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town, and the local Deputy tries to uncover the truth – something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined.




Super 8 is not a Cloverfield sequel as some may think.
Super 8 film was developed by the Eastman Kodak company during the Great Depression and released on the market in 1932 to create a home movie format that was less expensive than 16 mm.
Correction, it was launched in 1965.
The original Super 8 film release was a silent system only, but in 1973 a sound on film version was released.
Oliver Stone has used Super 8 several times in his more recent films, such as The Doors, Natural Born Killers, Nixon, U Turn, and JFK where his director of photography Robert Richardson employed it to evoke a period or to give a different look to scenes.

The Super 8 plastic cartridge is probably the fastest loading film system ever developed as it can be loaded into the Super 8 camera in less than two seconds without the need to directly thread or even touch the film.

The “look” of film holds a special place for many enthusiasts, but these days its very difficult to purchase film and even more difficult (and expensive!) to get it developed.

When I was in film school the first format we ever shot on was Super 8… and it’s still my favorite :)
The Super 8 film type was used in several of Oliver Stone’s films to my knowledge..the one I remember the most is JFK. :)

When director Peter Jackson was a child, he filmed his own stop-motion version of King Kong with action figures and a Super 8 camera. In 2005, he released the official live-action Hollywood remake (albeit digitally).
Producer Steven Spielberg spent his childhood making 8mm films, and then J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves were called by then Spielberg’s assistant Kathleen Kennedy to repair the films Steven had done.
The Film has two sides emulsion and base.The emulsion has that stuff starts to deteriorate.

A number of Experimental filmmakers continue to work extensively in the format and festivals such as the Images Festival (Toronto), the Media City Film Festival (Windsor, ONT), and TIE (based in Colorado) regularly project Super 8 films as part of their programming.
The PBS series Globe Trekker uses Super 8 in a portion of every episode, for its “particular look” and because they can catch impromptu scenes without waiting for a video camera to power up.

Super 8 film should be stored wound on a reel. Film reels often come in 50′ or even 400′ sizes. Some reels are plastic, while the larger reels are often metal and come in metal film canisters. It is easier to archive many smaller reels on one larger reel after splicing the smaller reels together.

The movie “Super 8″ was shot on film to have the look and feel of a 70s movie.
Starting in 1971,In-flight movies (previously 16 mm) were shown in Super 8 format until video distribution became the norm. The films were printed with an optical sound track (amateur films use magnetic sound), and spooled into proprietary cassettes that often held a whole 2-hour movie.
Its about the kids filming with a 8 mm camera and what they were able to capture with that lens :) But of course to know if I am corrent I will have to go and see it. K
Abrams sold the idea of Super 8 to Spielberg by having it be a hybrid project, i.e. it originated with two separate ideas, the first being about kids enjoying filming with a Super 8 and how the view the world and the second being spooky 1970s movie about how the government anxiously dealt with Area 51.
He said this mvie was a do it yourself approach …. “It was about trying to figure out how to use whatever was in your garage, because when you were a kid, you had almost no access to anything.
The kid actors in this movie are shooting their super 8 film. The kids have their film processed at a photo store on Main Street, Weirton, WV aka Lillian, Ohio.
Ryder had a crush on Elle Fanning and followed her around the set.

The Zapruder film of the JFK assassination was shot on a Bell and Howell double 8 camera, at about the time of the introduction of Super 8, which created a ubiquitous format for affordable home movies. The handy cams of the day.
J.J. Abrams also worked on the TV show LOST.
The hole in the center of a reel of Regular 8 is smaller than the hole in the center of a Super 8 reel. One cannot fit their finger in the center hole of a Regular 8 reel whereas, usually, one can in a Super 8 reel.
Famous director Guillermo del Toro’s first started shooting in Super 8 when he was 8 years old. When he was 10, he did a production with big fight scenes and some explosions when he got his Planet of the Apes figures. He still has a few of his films to this day. Some images are included in the Lionsgate release of Cronos.
