Academy Awards Nomination Predictions

With nomination morning looming, it’s time for our annual Oscar predictions on who will be invited to the party and who will be snubbed. So many wonderful, inspiring performances and films in 2010, but there are only 10 slots in the Best Picture category – even though it seems like 11 or even 12 are worthy of a spot. WAMG’s LA-based writer, Melissa Thompson, will be at the Academy to listen to the announcement of the nominations. After THE KING’S SPEECH upset over THE SOCIAL NETWORK at the Producer Guild Awards on Saturday night, she and I gave some careful consideration on what surprises may be in store tomorrow morning.

The 83rd Academy Awards nominations announcement will be streamed live on the Internet and be available for viewing on mobile devices. The webcast will begin at 5:30 a.m. PT with “Road to the Oscars,” featuring Chris Harrison, host of ABC’s “The Bachelor” and TV Guide Network’s Academy Awards red carpet show, and Dave Karger, senior writer at Entertainment Weekly. Livestream.com will facilitate the stream on behalf of the Academy. The nominations announcement edition of “Road to the Oscars” can be viewed on Oscar.com, Oscars.org, Facebook.com/TheAcademy and Livestream.com/AcademyAwards. The E! Channel will broadcast them live as usual.

Harrison will introduce several brief segments that celebrate the year in movies as well as the upcoming Oscar ceremony. Karger will join him in a discussion of movie trends from 2010 and how those trends might be reflected in the nominations.
Academy President Tom Sherak and last year’s Supporting Actress winner, Mo’Nique, will then take the stage in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater to reveal the nominees for 10 categories at 5:38:30am/pst. Immediately following the live announcement, Harrison and Karger will return to discuss interesting facts about the year’s nominees, Academy records that may have been broken, the movies receiving the most nominations and the races that look to be especially compelling. Additionally, they will be revealing a new piece of information about the Oscar telecast.
In February, “Road to the Oscars” will return exclusively on Oscar.com, the official website of the Academy Awards. Harrison will host the 10-episode series, with Karger offering insights about each of the 10 movies nominated for Best Picture.

On Best Picture I believe 127 HOURS and TOY STORY 3 stand a better chance than BLUE VALENTINE, THE TOWN, or WINTER’S BONE. And yes, I know TOY STORY 3 will get a Best Animated Motion Picture nomination, but last year UP was in both catagories.
yeah its a shame that animated features are allowed into the best picture category. That was the whole point of creating the animated category. You can’t really compare the two…like apples and oranges.
I disagree completely. If they are going to have a seperate category for animation why not do as the Golden Globes and have a separate one for Comedy etc?
I predict WINTER’S BONE gets a screenplay adaption nod and that’s it. And Halle Barry will be nominated for best actress for some new movie (can’t think of it’s title) where she plays a gal with multiple personalities including a racist white woman. The Academy will eat that up.
FRANKIE and ALICE. I can’t wait for the unexpected surprises!
Love it! Animated Films have their own category to win, but so do Foreign Language and Docs, and I think they should all have a chance at BP. It should just be an extra incredible film to qualify there, though, and I do not feel TS3 was good enough for a BP nom. I think Wall-E and Up were strong enough. I just don’t think TS3 was. That being said, I will be really surprised if TS3 is not in the BP 10. If it is not, I will remember where I heard that first!
I just finished my final predix earlier today, and am ready for the next phase!! Good luck with your predictions tomorrow!
Yes, more than likely TS3 will make it into the BP category. I think the omission of it on my prediction list is more of a silent protest because I really do feel strongly that the process of making a live action film and an animated film are so drastically different, both creatively and physically. I do recognize the hard work and technical craft that goes into an animated film, but having worked on more than one full length live action film, I will never agree that they are the same or that they should be in the same category.
I don’t understand how the process in which you get to a final product determines how good of a finished product you end up with…
Shouldn’t “Best Picture” be just that? Which of the listed is the “Best”.
The process of handing out awards for artistic expression is ridiculous anyway so I’m not sure where I’m going with this argument but I don’t see the basis of your argument.
I believe that The Kings Speech will take out best picture.
also Tom Hooper best director and Colin Firth Best Actor as he plays the part well, but i wonder if he
had a speech impediment himself after playing the role.
