Sundance 2010 Preview: THE TILLMAN STORY

The documentaries featured every year at the Sundance Film Festival are always worth watching out for, and 2010 seems to be no exception.  Take THE TILLMAN STORY, for instance, an emotionally engaging story that needed to be told brought to life by powerful interviews from Pat Tillman’s friends and family.  This film, from director Amir Bar-Lev (MY KID COULD PAINT THAT) looks to be not only one of the better documentaries at this years Sundance, it looks to be one of the most moving films of the entire festival.

Official synopsis:

Please note, the film has been renamed to THE TILLMAN STORY, but was previously titled I’M PAT ___ TILLMAN.

Pat Tillman gave up his professional football career to join the Army Rangers in 2002—and became an instant symbol of patriotic fervor and unflinching duty. But the truth about Pat Tillman is far more complex, and ultimately more heroic, than the caricature created by the media. And when the government tried to turn his death into war propaganda, they took on the wrong family. From her home in the Santa Cruz mountains, Pat’s mother, Dannie Tillman, led the family’s crusade to reveal the truth beneath the mythology of their son’s life and death.

Featuring candid and revelatory interviews with Pat’s fellow soldiers as well as his family, Amir Bar-Lev’s emotional and insightful film not only shines a light on the shady aftermath of Pat’s death and calls to task the entire chain of command but also examines themes as timeless as the notion of heroism itself.—Sundance Film Festival

  1. Sad for Courageous Pat. I admired him and what his family is doing for the record. Unfortunately, he sold himself to the enemy, the U.S. Government. In most cases, do not trust your government, Pat knew this. So, as my heart goes out to the Tillman family, be this a lesson to all. Do not join the military, do not work for the Man, cause the Man will lie, lie, and continue to lie.

    • You admired him, yet you desecrate his memory by denigrateing his descion to join the Army in the aftermath of 9/11. His action harkened back to the days when everyone stood up to serve, including professional athelites and movie stars. Now our country and it’s people are so self-absorbed and cynical that the thought of putting one’s life on the line is an exception, not the rule. Of course the brass, and politicians fucked the duck in the way that they handled his death, that does’nt make his sacrifice, or that of any of those brave men in vain. WE WERE ATTACKED ON 9/11, if YOU don’t remember. We are in the midst of the most signifigant struggle between good and evil since WWII and the fight against Nazism and Japanese Fascism. If anything this fight is more daunting, because our enemies are religious fanatics. If we took your advice our country, no, our civilization, would be at the mercy of the islamo-fascists. I don’t think Pat would agree with your so-called compliment at all.

  2. What RP4512 says is pure truth.

I miss Pat. I mourn for him and what he would/could have been. His crime was having faith in his rulers,…and it killed him.

  3. Cheburashka says:

That is why we must believe people like Alex Jones, Mike Rivero, and so many other on the web. We don't watch TV anymore as we would rather pay for food than lies.
