Lucas Envisions STAR WARS Universe in 3D
Behold, fans of the far, far away and long time ago tales of intergalactic war… George Lucas envisions the Star Wars universe in 3D and now, he sees it as a very possible realization. Having been keen on the idea for years, Lucas told Access Hollywood during a Golden Globe after party that seeing the improvements to the technology evident in James Cameron’s AVATAR gives him a new hope for making his Star Wars universe one in 3D.
So, I am compelled to ask myself… Do I really want to see this come to fruition? Short answer: Yes! Of course, I feel it’s necessary to qualify my statement…
If Lucas’ plan is merely to re-release the entire existing franchise (again) in an attempt to bank on the new 3D popularity, then to be quite frank… screw him! I’ve already played into this dollar-making device twice now. Hell, it took Lucas long enough to transition from VHS to DVD and we still haven’t seen Star Wars on Blu-Ray.
If he really has a true desire to do something cool, he should put together and produce a project that takes the franchise in a whole new direction, or delves into any number of yet untouched story-lines. In a sense reboot the franchise. Not in the start over from the beginning sense, but make a real effort to create an enjoyable, quality storyline that fans will appreciate, instead of over-marketing the movie(s) to kids. Lucas has enough money to last him till death, so how about a really good story this trilogy around, eh?
I would love to see him seek out some fresh, new talent with a keen creative eye that could give the new chapter of the Star Wars saga a fresh new look and an intriguing perspective. Lucas should be looking for someone who could recapture the hearts and minds of existing fans after the disappointment of THE PHANTOM MENACE and Jar Jar Binks, but also draw in newer, younger audiences.
So, let’s just go ahead and ask the questions that we’re all interested in discussing. Chime in on the subject. Tell us if you have a particular director in mind. Do you have a favorite untouched story arc you’d like to see adapted for the big screen? Any particular character of interest? Share your thoughts by leaving your comments below.

Lucas has already said that he intends to re-release the original trilogy in 3D, so this isn't really a valid forum other than just a pie-in-the-sky wish list. GL has gone on record many times as saying that he is done making new Star Wars except for the planned live action TV series and the existing Clone Wars cartoon. So let the speculation begin, but qualify it by saying that the plans have been in the works for quite a few years to re-release the original trilogy in 3D, so that is what's going to happen. I'm so sick of people poo pooing everything GL does as a "money making scheme". Um, what does anyone think the movie industry is? Everyone is out to make money, it isn't fair to condemn George Lucas for doing the same. Why doesn't anyone condemn James Cameron? Do you think he's giving his money to charity? LOL. I for one will love to watch the original trilogy in 3D…or the prequels for that matter. Jar Jar Binks with a 3D tongue. Bring it on! :)
I love the original trilogy, the preguilogy is hit and miss. Regarding James Cameron, you don't see him re-releasing his films (a significant number more oft hem as well) multiple times. He doesn't go back and redo what he's done. I'm not saying the man can't do what he wants, but imagine what he could do with the money and resources he'll put into re-releasing existing movies in 3D. Granted, it would be cool to see the first frilogy in 3D although I wonder how good it would actually look, given it wasn't originally shot with this in mind. My point is simply that its not that big of a deal… I can definitely live without seeing the existing Star Wars movies in 3D, but would gladly open my wallet to new SW films.
I love star wars and avatar. So any means to enjoy the movie more is fine by me.

SHADOWS OF THE EMPIRE would make a great movie. At least based on my experience with video game for N64. The story, though I never read it, is set between EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and RETURN OF THE JEDI. Wikipedia describes the novel:
"It introduces Prince Xizor, the alien overlord of the largest criminal organization in the galaxy. His goal is to take Darth Vader's place at Emperor Palpatine's side. The novel also resumes the storylines of the usual characters. Han Solo is still frozen in carbonite, being taken to the vile gangster Jabba the Hutt by the bounty hunter Boba Fett. It shows Princess Leia's secret search for Boba Fett, the construction of Luke Skywalker's new lightsaber and Darth Vader's search for his son. It introduces a new character to the saga, Dash Rendar, a Han Solo-type smuggler, who acts primarily as a replacement for Han Solo and as a part of the action sequences."
Dash Rendar is a badass character not yet portrayed in the films. Could be perfect role for a new talent, trusting that George Lucas will actually deliver this time. Not like his failed attempt with Hayden Christensen as Anakin in the last two prequels.
Harrison Ford stay at home since Han's still in carbonite. Plus I'm sure someone still has the original mold from Jedi. Sorry, Carrie Fisher. Princess Leia would have to be a minor character and most likely incognito, perhaps as she appeared in RETURN OF THE JEDI wearing the bounty hunter mask with the voice manipulator, otherwise she'd have to be totally absent. Dare I say she pass the crown to a sexy saber-wielding Maggie Gyllenhall type? I'm sure Mark Hamill could do something. Maybe not. Crash land, and be in a coma, haunted by Vader's telepathy. Boba Fett, you are still the shit. Just don't take your mask off. No one cares about Axel from Barb Wire. Jabba the Hut, sure. You're tongue would be disgustingly awesome in 3D.
All this talk is making me want to play the video game again and go pen a script. Dash Rendar would make for an awesome new protagonist if story followed him. We would get to revisit the Echo base on Hoth and zip through canyons as Dash battles a swoop bike gang (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Swoop). Once again, awesome sequence for 3D viewers.
This would be the kind of Star Wars adventure that might reignite the franchise's appeal to new audiences and hell, if Lucas screws it up, or whatever director the studios get (eh-eh-eh James Carmeron, don't even think about it), it would just find its home in the rotten bunch along with the prequels. No big deal. And what would this project even be referred to as chronologically, if not a prequel? A resume-quel? Would the trilogy become a tetralogy? I'd get behind a SHADOWS OF THE EMPIRE movie and would be thrilled to hear even a rumor of its development. Maybe I'll spread one myself and hope it makes its way to Hollywood. George Lucas reportedly said, "he would have made a story like this into a movie if he had had the time and effort to do so back in the early 1980s." Aside from the original cast, there's plenty of people with the time and effort today, so George just sit back and let Hollywood squeeze one more summer blockbuster out of this gravy train, for old time sake. For us.
"GL" is a wanker, control-freak for not releasing all the Star Wars movies on Blu-Ray. Screw him and his attitude. James Cameron has PWNED George "Can't move out of the Seventies" Lucas at the box office. The TOP TWO movies of all time? Lucas is just pissed that Cameron has better vision, is a better storyteller, and makes more at the box office than any Star Wars movie ever could. And don't give me that "in today's dollars" crap, cuz Gone with the Wind and Snow White would then crush Star Wars anyway.
Lucas = control freak wanker
Paul, you seem irked as if you knew the guy and he personally insulted you. I'm not so sure that Lucas is in any way pissed at James Cameron. If you think superior vision and story-telling ability is what pulls in box-office bucks, why are movies like "Twilight", "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen", and "2012" all in the top 50?
And as for his attitude, I'm sure it's along the lines of, "Oh that's great. I wrote a hit play and directed it, so I'm not sweating it either."
Nice post. I be taught one thing more difficult on completely different blogs everyday. It is going to at all times be stimulating to learn content material from other writers and practice somewhat something from their store. I’d want to make use of some with the content on my blog whether you don’t mind. Natually I’ll offer you a hyperlink in your internet blog. Thanks for sharing.
