AVATAR Reaches $300 Million… Take that Skeptics!

I have to admit, I am a little bit guilty of having initially been worried that James Cameron’s AVATAR might have a bit of difficulty breaching the box office financial success bar which was set very high by the allegedly $300+ million budget, but I always held out hope… especially after having seen the film. Now that I’ve seen it twice, I am certain the film will not only make money, but will likely do fairly well considering theaters are still packing crowds in for the hyped sci-fi adventure.

After a modestly respectful opening weekend of $77 million, it appears the film has a better endurance game than a sprinting game. AVATAR pulled another $25 million in ticket sales on New Years Day alone, which according to Variety puts the film at $300 million. That ranks the film as the third highest-grossing movie of 2009, behind HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF_BLOOD PRINCE and TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN. Even more amazing is that Cameron’s box office juggernaut TITANIC took 44 days to reach this milestone, whereas AVATAR took only 15 days. And, just to add some additional sweetness to the punch, it’s been estimated that the current worldwide gross of AVATAR could be in the ballpark of $800 million. Congrats, Mr. Cameron! You’ve done it once again!

  1. Haven't seen it yet but it certainly appears that a decade long hiatus from feature film making hasn't slowed the man down. I will see it and buy the Blu-Ray, this is a big money making hit.

  2. Ha, the estimated worldwide gross so far (including projected numbers for Sunday) 1.05 billion dollars. So start preparing the article for tomorrow, think of a good title and trust me when I say this, you won't see another movie reaching 1.05 billion in 17 days in a very very long time.

  3. Avatar was a great movie, I just watched it a few day ago. I don’t usually go to the theather because I get nervious around a lot people but I think I’ll give this one a shot because people are saying that it’s even better on the big screen, I think it might be in 3D. Anyway the movie Avatar get two thumbs up from me, I watch all of my movies at voobymovies, com if anyone was wondering and it’s free
