I'm still amazed at how awesome the effects for *Jurassic Park* are, even when compared to most films released today. I'd like to see it released in 3D. Not for "cool" effects though, but for what 3D should be used for - depth, height, "weight", etc. Anyhoo, great list!

I'd love to hear which films you would have chosen instead. You seem quite sure of your choices and quite sure, despite popular consensus, that the films elected here are unworthy. Please, enlighten us...

Great list, I agree with most of it. Many people seem to forget the REAL breakthrough films, like Jurassic Park. I'll never forget seeing that one for the first time. I'm also in agreement about Apollo 13 being a seminal film as well. I would also add Saving Private Ryan (1998) for showing us what war really looks like for the first time. Platoon was great and definitely worth the mention, but no one will ever forget the opening scene in SPR.

This really is a fantastic list; it's rare that I'll run across anything I feel worthy of a comment. As I read down the list, I could see the little ticker in my head counting off the Edward Norton movies. The People vs. Larry Flint, American History X.... and Fight Club. There was no doubt in my mind that the 1999 film you selected would be Fight Club, but I was wrong. I mean, I like the Matrix. In fact, I own it, along with the majority of the other movies on this list. But I must say, I think this is the one disagreement I have with this list. In spite of my disagreement, I am quite pleased with your list. An excellent way to respect the movies of the past.

. I like his list very much. I would offer 23 more. Midnight Express, Airplane, The Killing Fields, Wifemistress, The Thing, Menace II Society, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Miller's Crossing, Purple Rain, Scanners, Robocop, Caligula (only because I still can't see how they got all of these acclaimed actors to do a porno movie), Unforgiven, Johnny Handsome, Terminator, Boyz in da Hood, Thief, Ravenous, LA Confidential, 48 HRS, Antz, Farinelli , Ghost Dog.

Some nice picks on your list. Let's take a look...

DO THE RIGHT THING - Already added to the Registry in 1999.
THE THIRD MAN - Great film and certainly deserves to be preserved, but not from my lifetime.
GET CARTER - I assume you speak of the 1971 original w/ Michael Caine and not the 2000 remake w/ SLy Stallone, neither am I a fan of.
HIGH FIDELITY - Great film, but more deserving than REQUIEM FOR A DREAM... I think not.
ALMOST FAMOUS - (See above comment.)
THE WAY OF THE GUN - (Again, see above comment. There were several great films from 2000.)
THE WILD BUNCH - Was also already added to the Registry in 1999 along w/ DO THE RIGHT THING.
TRAINSPOTTING - Another great film, but not sure this counts as an American film.
STRANGER THAN PARADISE - Nice pick, but already added to the Registry in 2002.
ANNIE HALL - Added to the Registry in 1992.
SEVEN SAMURAI - Excellent film, but not American.
BOOGIE NIGHTS - Great pick, and it nearly made my list, but lost out to THE ICE STORM.
FIGHT CLUB - Another one that was close, but lost out to THE MATRIX on my list.
RESERVOIR DOGS - Probably not as significant as MALCOLM X, but very good film.
STREET FIGHTER - Well, you may need to clarify here as to which of the 5 films w/ this title you mean.
POINT BREAK - Fun movie, but not terribly significant.
GHOST WORLD - Great pick, but missed it by that much... came out in 2001.
BLADE RUNNER - Awesome, but was already added to the Registry in 1993.
SLAP SHOT - Another fun movie, but not very significant.
RAISING ARIZONA - Awesome flick, but certainly not as significant as FULL METAL JACKET.
APOCALYPSE NOW - Already added to the Registry in 2000.
THE GOONIES - Cool movie, not significant.
DIE HARD - Fun movie, not significant.

Not to be rude... but, did you read the intro?

(If you don’t see any foreign films on this list, calm down… there’s a reason for that.)

This is a list of films I think should eventually be preserved by "our" National Film Registry, meaning American films...

Excellent list! You know you have a good list on your hands when you think, "well, maybe I'd change that one, but I'd have to go back and see what came out that year." Some populist stuff on there, but the inclusion of American History X makes the list, truly. The only thing I know I'd have added was Strange Days for, what, 1995? Good on you!

Beat me to it Michelle...some friends criticise The Right stuff for being overly long, but it is a tremendous realisation of the book.

Maybe the best 23 movie collection on DVD for under $5.00 at Blockbuster with $2.99 going for the Star Wars movie & 1.98 going for the Breakfast Club movie. If Matrix would have been 1 movie it would get a rating but trying to make 3 made the whole idea suck!!!!!!!!!!
