20 Animated Features Line Up for 2009 Oscar® Race

A huge embrace for animated movies was made by AMPAS today as 20 films made the cut in the Animated Feature film category, although I think 5 will be nominated for the final ballot. Even the Alvin Squeakquel was shown some love.

From AMPAS:

“Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel,” “The Dolphin – Story of a Dreamer,” “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” “Planet 51,” “The Princess and the Frog,” “The Secret of Kells” and “A Town Called Panic” have not yet had their required Los Angeles qualifying run. Submitted features must fulfill the theatrical release requirements and meet all of the category’s other qualifying rules before they can advance in the voting process.

Under the rules for this category, a maximum of 5 features can be nominated in a year in which the field of eligible entries numbers at least 16.

Films submitted in the Animated Feature Film category also may qualify for Academy Awards in other categories, including Best Picture, provided they meet the requirements for those categories.

The 82nd Academy Awards nominations will be announced on Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2009 will be presented on Sunday, March 7, 2010, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center , and televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 200 countries worldwide.

  1. Although I'm yet to see "Fantastic Mr. Fox" and I think it will be great, if "Up" doesn't win I'll call Shannanigans. But who honestly thinks it won't win?

  2. Am I the only one curious how THE SQUEAKQUEL is even eligible for this? If that's eligible, wouldn't something like AVATAR or TRANSFORMERS be up for it, as well? Maybe they would have been they just weren't submitted for consideration. That's the only thing I can come up with. Thoughts?

  3. Thats a damn good point. I'm sure theres some rule saying that a certain percentage of the film needs to be animated in which case Squeakquel might fall into that catagory, but then again, Avatar should be on the list too. Good question sir, good question.

  4. Nothing looked better than "9", but it left you thinking is this it. 'Up" is by far the weakest PIXAR film. Ice Age, Monsters and Cloudy were forced. It is Ponyo"s time.

    • As much as I love Miyazaki, PONYO was, by far, his weakest film in a long time. UP was incredible. It was the first, animated movie in a long, LONG, time that got me misty-eyed, and that was in the first 15 minutes. There is no question UP is going to walk away with that statue.

      • I completely agree Kirk. Pixar was able to pull the strings of my heart with "Up" unlike any of their other movies. I won't even lie, forget misty-eyed, I straight up cried in the opening sequence!

Although I think trying to figure out Pixar's weakest film could make for a good article here at WAMG. I would say A Bugs Life or Cars, but I still love both of them.

  5. Sag mal wie heisst den dieses Template auf dieser Seite? Ich hab das schon mal wo bestaunt und w
