Fantasy Cast: Who should play Ash in ‘Evil Dead’ remake?

By  |

With Rob Zombie’s sequel to his remake of HALLOWEEN opening tomorrow, it’s got me thinking about another potential remake in the proverbial “works”… that being a little diddy called THE EVIL DEAD, originally brought to us by Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell.

So, you may… no, most probably ARE asking yourself, “Why the HELL are they remaking THE EVIL DEAD?” If so, you’re certainly not alone. (In fact, you are also not the only one who, on some level, really doesn’t care who plays Ash in the new film, because he’ll never compare to Bruce Campbell, right? We’ll get to that momentarily.) The ultimate question on everyone’s mind is… Who would be able to fill Mr. Campbell’s shoes if they do go through with the remake?

I’ve seen a few names thrown around, most of which are ridiculous. I’m personally on the fence here, but leaning towards NOT doing a remake. Regardless, if they do… they do. In which case, I’m also inclined to go the route of finding that special no name newbie that “might” be able to pull it off in a way we can all mostly accept as a fresh take, especially if a talented new director takes on the project. That’s what I’d like to see, if it’s done at all.

Amidst the names being proposed on various Internet forums include: brace yourselves, this isn’t pretty… Seann William Scott (I DON’T THINK SO!); Shia LaBeouf (NO F**KING WAY!); and finally, Ryan Reynolds, a curiously semi-appropriate choice for an actor who has mastered sarcasm, but I just don’t see him being able to truly capture the “essence” of Ash.

So, the primary question, which this discussion point is NOT likely to avoid many similar answers, is “why” remake the movie? However, seeing as that’s somewhat a moot point, I ask the more pertinent question… Who should play Ash in the EVIL DEAD remake? Hopefully, it won’t be one of the above mentioned names. Do you have an idea of some “star” that could pull it off? Or, maybe you have a new face, a no name or some rising star you feel fits the bill?

    How about Christian Bale?

Eric Dane, who played 'Hero' in Feast. The Hero part was written, I believe, as a parody of Ash, and Eric Dane pulled it off beautifully.

Dale Sadler should direct the remake –

The remake should star mostly unknowns, and feature OGRE as a lead actor. (already on board pending a greenlight)

NOT to be shot on 35 mm, but on 16mm, with director of photography Wilson Large.

Low to medium budget – cast and crew of about 17 people, and the soundtrack should be done by Lustmord (already on board should Sadler receive a greenlight) and after listening to CRANK2, Mike Patton is the OBVIOUS choice for sound effects and collaboration with Lustmord for the music…

Bruce Campbell is very protective of the remake, which is a dream project for a new director as well as the TRUE fans of the original. . . and if anyone is being considered to direct it besides Dale Sadler it will get ugly.

Special FX would be somebody unknown and so will the stunts.

    This is the real deal.
To be filmed on actual indian land in WA State and to incorporate the theme of the original WITHIN THE WOODS short – which was Native american spirits, rather than Sumarian deadites. .
    That's enough spoilers for you.

Tell Bruce Campbell Sadler is still at it and that he said to maybe go and see his friend Sam Raimi's film DRAG ME TO HELL on the big screen in between commercial tv breaks. Or in between interviews where he mentions he has been too busy to go see it.

    Nobody's THAT busy are they?

I agree, Jensen Ackles from Supernatural would be a great Ash.

I still wish they would do an Evil Dead 4 with Ash being a S-Mart store manager and a new person sort of taking over the franchise.
