Dakota Fanning in ‘Wizard of Oz’ Remake?
Unbelievable that I had to type this out, much less read about, a ‘Wizard of Oz’ remake. It gets much worse in yesterday’s Guardian.co.uk article….weep. How ’bout we rent “The Wiz” and call it a day?
Dakota Fanning could be poised to don the ruby slippers for a sequel to The Wizard of Oz. But be warned, the studio is claiming this new version will be “darker and more action-packed” than the original 1939 musical. The Wizard of Oz starred Judy Garland as Dorothy, a Kansas farm-girl who finds herself whisked to a technicolor world of munchkins and witches. By contrast, the Warner Bros remake will play out in the present day and chart the adventures of Dorothy’s feistier granddaughter. “You’ve still got Dorothy trapped in an odd place,” explains co-producer Todd McFarlane. “But she’s much closer to the Ripley character from Alien, than a helpless singing girl.”
Oh yeah…cuz Dorothy’s gonna whip out a semi automatic weapon on the The Wicked Witch’s ass. Are they kidding??? The same Todd McFarlane of the, and I use this loosely, classic ‘Spawn’ series. Oh for chrissakes….and thats pretty much all he’s done. How the hell does that qualify him to touch Wizard of Oz? I love the character of Ripley as much as anyone, but to compare her to Dorothy is insane…nevermind unfathomable. Add to the fact that we’ve seen enough of Dakota Fanning to last the rest of our lives.

yeah this is gonna be like that shitty mini-series on SciFi channel a few years ago.."TinMan"…..didn't they learn anything from that? I don't care what the story is…Wizard of Oz is a beloved classic that should not be touched. Just a sad reminder that there is barely a creative bone left in Hollywood. Sigh.
I agree!! There is no originality in Hollywood. Movies today are either remakes, sequels, or similar to other movies.
The original Wizard of Oz will always be a classic. If Warner Brothers or whoever decides to remake the movie, it wont be big like the first.
I don't know what these people are talking about. I've waited what seems like a lifetime for someone to do a remake of this movie!! Maybe McFarlane can "spawn" another theme song to put on America's Got (no) Talent besides funky redos of "somewhere over the rainbow". Give me a break! Chew on this one a while, MICHELLE!
I'm 50/50 on this idea. Sounds like Warner Bros. rebuttal to Alice in Wonderland. They might be able to pull something off, but I doubt it. Sounds pretty poser-ific.
As much as I am against a remake I'm sure it will happen anyway. If it does I think they should use Shirley Temple as Glinda since she was almost Dorothy in the first one
The original Wizard of Oz was more of a parody of the actual story book. It may have touched millions for decades and became one of the most known classic films in history, as the first colored film. But it left out and altered what the original story that Balm wrote and imagined. I look forward to The Wizard Of Oz not being remade but released as a new movie based on the book, not a remake.
This is a classic leave it alone can't wait to see it on the big screen with my grandchildern, what a treat it will be!!!!!
The fact Dakota might be in it gives me reason to see it. I do not know what to think of this so far. But I love Dakota. Even before all the New Moon shit. She's one of the few young talents out there that can act.
I agree. The synops for the movie sounds horrible. I kinda like the idea of Dorthy's grand daughter going to oz though. The Ripley stuff sounds crappy though and they definitely need a different director for the job. Anyway, back to what I agree with you… I first heard about the possible remake from my husband and before I heard anymore my first thought was Dakota as Dorthy or her grand daughter. She would be perfect and is a great actress. As another choice — and trust me I understand how gitchy this might sound — but —- Miley Cyrus would probably make a good Dorthy. She could definitely pull off the girl from Kansas look and (well at least in my opinion) has a pretty good voice if it was a musical again.)
This is very unsettling, I don't like when they remake movies but with a different character/s doing "similar" adventures, look what happened with the Bewitched remake. Do the movie/book some justice by at least using the actual story line. The Wizard of Oz, although a great movie and widely remembered classic, didn't explore a lot of the sections of the original novel, I think that left a wide open opportunity for these people to make a movie for older and younger generations, by reviving the old classic and introducing additional plot lines. I don't even see the point in using the books proper name for this movie when it's not the same story. They say they're modernizing it, but I don't see why, it's set in a fictional world different to ours. How will they modernize? Put munchkins in financial crisis, Glinda traveling around in a Porsche and Dorothy being blasted to Oz by nuclear warfare? Oz doesn't need to be related to our modern time, that's why fictional worlds are so effective, because of their uniqueness and difference to our own. Why take a fantastic story and make it remind our selves of the crappy financial turmoil we're in the middle of. A remake was considered unspeakable by most, but now they're changing the storyline, let's see how this plays out.
This movie sounds EXCITING! I for one am for this remake. It will be a fun movie, and I can’t hardly wait for it!
khh
I love the classic movie. I am kind of excited to see a remake and look forward to seeing it. Of course it will not own up to the orginal but it may be good. I heard that a remake of the African-American version of The Wiz was suppose to happen to. If anyone has any infomation about that, please post. I think that would be a good idea to tribute to the king of pop Michael Jackson.
Here's a suggestion….how about taking a clue from the Chronicles of Narnia series and making a movie that is a faithful adaptation of the book that so many people love and cherish. Then you might actually have a hit on your hands. So far what Im reading sounds like typical Hollywood crap.
This is a very bad idea. Remaking the most classic movie of all time? You cant remake such a classic movie! nobody will like it. Im watching the original Wizard Of Oz, and just by watching it, i know that remaking it is the worst idea in the history of bad ideas. No offence to dakota, shes a great actress, but this remake should not go ahead.
First of all its not exactly a remake they are doing (i read the script already). Its based in the next chapter of the books (which if you are a Oz fanatic you already know it) Dakota is too young to play Dorothy as a young adult. And well the art & script are amazing. Lets just hope for the visuals and acting to be as exceptional as the other elements.

OMG! I want a remake but not like this. Why can’t they do an ACTUAL book version and have someone like Peter Jackson do it, course you will be seated in the theater for 3 hours but hey I am willing. I can live with Tin Man miniseries but geez. I love the 1939 movie but come on. I would like to see an honest to truth version on screen than this crap they are proposing.
