Tim Burton Confirms ‘Dark Shadows’ at Comic Con
Speculation on when Tim Burton would finally jump into his long-planned adaptation of ‘Dark Shadows’ came to a head yesterday at San Diego’s Comic Con. Burton announced that once he is finished with ‘Alice in Wonderland,’ he would be moving on to ‘Dark Shadows’ next.
Johnny Depp – shocker – has already signed on to star in the adapation of the vampire soap opera that ran from the late ’60s to the early ’70s. The television show featured not only vampires but werewolves, zombies, and even time travel. The show came back in the early ’90s as a short-lived series. The televised Gulf War, however, caused the refurbished series to lose momentum early on.
Depp has gone on record as saying it is a “childhood dream” to portray the film’s lead vampire character, Barnabas Collins. Burton seems the perfect choice for bringing the film to realization.

From what I can remember, I don't think Depp is a good fit. He seems to only be able to do two characters, emotionally dead/awkward man (Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow) and crazy party guy (once upon a time in Mexico, Pirates…) with the occasional mix between the two (Willy Wonka).
Dark shadows was my very favorite show growing up. I have recently been catching up via DVD from the very begining of the series. It really stands up after all of this time!
I can think of no one else who could play Barnabas other than Johnny Depp. He can morph into any role and he understands this character very well. I for one cannot wait for this film!
I love Johnny so much I even sit through those horrible pirate movies!!!
Don't underestimate his ability as an actor. We'll just have to wait and see how Johnny will take this role.
Awesome news DARK SHADOWS finally "confirmed" to be on Director Tim BURTON major film next big screen release: I'm totally thrilled & look forward to the haunting master talents of his/Mr. BURTON & Actor Johnny DEPP (whom shall play Barnabas Collins..'nice/Mr. Depp will be extraodinary for this role!) haunting adaptation of this much beloved SCI-FI Horror/Thriller Classic Dark Shadows in whom legendary Creator Dan CURTIS may he rest in peace would be quite honored/thrilled that his spellbinding TV Classic is going to the big screen in 2010 or 2011. That's wonderful and hope that the Blueprint-haunting guidelines to the DS storyline will be followed with much care & respect for The COLLINS Family & Company have a haunting stories to unveil. Frightening, can't wait and also looking forward to BURTON's newest film masterpiece "Alice in Wonderland" to be release next year 2010! Great.
