Fantasy Cast: Who Should Play The Duke in the ‘Escape From New York’ Remake?

fantasycast

Basically, when you’re talking about someone playing The Duke of New York, you’re talking about someone playing Isaac Hayes.   He was the embodiment of that character, and he really didn’t seem to be channelling anything other than his own, cool presence.   You could just as easily be asking who should be playing Isaac Hayes in a biopic of the musician’s life.

That is, of course, if whoever decides to direct the ‘Escape from New York’ remake plans to make the character much the same as he was in the 1981 original.   They could take the character in a whole new direction, and that raises another question entirely.

There is an obvious route to take here.   Think of the coolest, bald, black guy in Hollywood.   I’m sure a certain, purple lightsaber just lit up in everyone’s head who is reading this.   That would be Samuel L. Jackson.

He’s the only guy in Hollywood you could buy forcing someone else calling them “A #1!”   For that reason alone, he’s put right up at the top of the casting list for this film.

However, if the director decides to take a different direction, there are certainly other choices for The Duke out there.   Modern, action directors (at least one who would take on the task of remaking John Carpenter’s ‘Escape from New York’) are under the belief that bigger is better.   Having said this, it certainly isn’t a stretch to think that whoever directs ‘Escape from New York’ will want a big guy to play The Duke.   For this, our director needs not look any further than his local UFC PPV for the biggest, baddest Duke candidates on the planet.

These come in the form of either Quinton “Rampage” Jackson or Kimbo Slice.

Both guys have the physical prowess, and they could certainly give whoever is cast in the part of Snake a run for his money.   Kimbo’s name recognition isn’t nearly as big as Rampage’s, and Rampage would bring so much more cool to the part.

Here is where we leave it to you.   Who do you think should play the part of The Duke if and when the ‘Escape from New York’ remake ever gets off the ground?   What direction should the director go in?   Should the part be more of an Isaac Hayes turn or something completely different?   Let us know by shooting us your suggestions in the comment section below.

  1. I'd have to go with Samuel L. Unless you want to make him just a thug who punches things and throws out the occasional one liner, I'd stay away from UFC fighters. Wrestlers and fighters tend to not make good movies as they are always cast as, and the script is written for, wrestlers and fighters. Did the Scorpion King need to give the people's eyebrow in The Mummy Returns? No, but he did anyways because it wasn't the Scorpion King, it was The Rock as The Scorpion King. How long did it take for him to go from The Rock to Dwayne Johnson? Unless you get someone really good in there to write it, I would stay far away from wrestlers.

  2. How about Common?

  3. I like Samuel L Jackson, but where's the proof that either of the other two guys can act at all. The Duke needs to be cool and charismatic. I'd prefer to see some one who has acting chops. Right off the bat I'd have to say some one like Michael Clark Duncan or Ving Rhames… But I agree with Gavin that Common would be a good choice. Some one with a little bit of acting experience.

  4. Hell no to kimble slice, The baddest badass out there now is Ving Rhames or Chris long of the Rams.

  5. The_Kid says:

I'm thinking Common as well he can be badass but cool calm and collective at the same time, I think he could pull it off pretty well, so he's my choice.

  6. Hands down, I think that Ving Rhames should play "The Duke of New York" Although Samuel Jackson is awesome in his own right and as black as black can get when it comes to performing, Rhames has the physical presence needed to be a believable Duke. He looks mean and that's what you need.

As far as this movie if it ever gets made who should play Snake Plissken? My answer? Josh Holloway of Lost. Holloway already looks and acts just like Snake, he is the only guy on earth that can do the character justice if he's not played by Kurt Russell who sorry to say, is a bit old now to play Snake.

With Holloway and Rhames butting heads, this should make for a great movie. But you need a director with the vision and talent to pull this off. Who should direct Escape you ask? Rob Zombie has my vote. He is much like John Carpenter in his early days.He has his own stable of veteran actors and Zombie can revamp the franchise and inject the blood that it needs to spawn better sequels, unlike the dissapointing Escape from L.A. So there are my choices if you want to see more visit my site: thenamesplissken.webs.com and get all the answers…

    Call me Snake.
