‘Spider-Man 4′ Producer Dishes Out Some Dirt

spiderman-4

Reed Tucker over at the New York Post caught up with producer Todd Black while the producer was out promoting ‘The Taking of Pelham 123.’  The subject of Black’s next movie, ‘Spider-Man 4′ came up, and Black was more than happy to dish out some information regarding some of the character we may or may not be seeing in the new movie.

Check out this info:

  • Kirsten Dunst is definitely on board. Last month, director Sam Raimi was quoted as saying he didn’t know if the actor was going to sign up to play Mary Jane again, but it appears that she has.
  • Contrary to online rumors, it doesn’t look like the script will feature a wedding between Mary Jane and Peter Parker.  Black had no knowledge of that subplot.
  • Also contrary to online rumors (but really, are there any other kind?), the villain will not be Morbius the vampire. Sure, vampires are hot, but Black squashed that rumor completely.
  • As for who the villain will be, Black had this to say: “We’re just coming up with who the villain’s going to be now. We’ll be shooting in New York again. Trust me, people will appreciate who we pick, because it’ll be a big part of New York.”

“A big part of New York”?  This little piece of information has now sparked countless hours already of bickering and guessing who this villain with some kind of tie to New York City could be.

If you want my humble opinion, and how could you not, I would have to say Raimi and co are bringing in The Kingpin.  He’s the epitome of the New York City gangster, and, despite already showing up in the ‘Daredevil’ movie, he is really one of the few main, Spider-Man villains yet to face off with the webslinger.

What do you think?  What other Spider-Man villains could fit the bill based on this information?  Are you happy or a little disappointed to hear Dunst is back in?  Do you think Michael Clarke Duncan should reprise his role as Kingpin or should it be someone else?  Michael Chiklis in a fat suit, anyone?  Let us know by commenting below.

  1. Clark Duncan shouldn't reprise his role. Nobody thinks of Daredevil fondly and after Spidey 3 (despite how much bank it made) they need to let Raimi do his thing and look forward and not back. Chiklis is too small and also already The Thing. Not sure who could play Kingpin, but not those two. I'm also indifferent to Kirsten Dunst. She's obviously not the ideal MJ, wah, wah, but it's not a deal breaker as long as the movie is up to the standards of the first two.

  2. Tanis Gennean says:

I find it more "upsetting" as a movie-goer when there are changes with characters (ie someone else coming in as MJ) -with the exception of Christian Bale as Batman (the best thing to happen to Batman). It's unnerving and makes it nearly impossible to get into the story when the characters vary from one story to the next. Having said this, (not out of respect for his death, but because he embodied the Joker so supremely and due to his death, no one else can ever play the Joker. That character in every facet has been (pardon my terms) "laid to rest."

It makes more sense to change directors -at least someone better at conveying the "vision" and bringing out in an actor what they are searching for. Which is why it's vital for them to do their homework and have the best cast possible from the start . The right director can make up for a lot of what an actor isn't (fortunately and unfortunately). Sometimes, you can have an amazing actor and if the director sucks, all the best acting in the world won't make much of a difference.

The only time I feel it's appropriate to change actors is when the next generation of films begin. Superman (unfortunately) is a prime example of it all having gone wrong, though. That was just a complete disaster all the way around. I wasn't a big fan of the choices in character changes they made. "Clark" wasn't too bad, but for the most part, that movie was a major let-down in every other way -from casting to costume re-designing. The only actor that I felt was actually cast well was Frank Langella ("Perry White").

So, I say they should stick with what they've got already. The first 2 were great, but what do I know? I'm just a chick who likes comics.
