Top Ten Tuesday: Greatest Opening Scenes

greatestopeningscenes

They are the first things we see.   They are the launching point for your film.   They are the opening scenes.   Many opening scenes drive home right from the start what the film is all about and the attitude the filmmakers are projecting towards their audience.   Some don’t work, but there are several opening scenes that stick out in cinefile’s minds all over.

It’s hard to put together a list of the 10 best opening scenes, but we’ve done our very best.   Below, you’ll find what we Movie Geeks believe to be the best of the best in opening minutes of a film.

A quick note:   We don’t want to hear anyone bitching about how ‘Saving Private Ryan’ is not on this list.   Yes, the Normandy landing is an incredible scenes, one of the greatest battle sequences ever.   However, think back to ‘Saving Private Ryan.’   Think back to the very beginning of the film.   The Normandy invasion is not the opening scene.   Rather, the bookend scene at the cemetery is the very first scene we see after the opening title.   So, there.   Put that in your movie geek pipe and smoke it.

Now, onto the list:

10. The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring

9. Citizen Kane

8. Pulp Fiction

7. A Clockwork Orange
THE NARRATION NEAR THE END OF THIS CLIP IS IN ITALIAN. APOLOGIES FROM THE EDITOR.

  1. No WAY OF THE GUN love? :(

  2. Michelle says:

‘Touch of Evil’…#1 Woo-Hoo…great choice. Just look at Chuck Heston in his prime!

  3. Michelle – Chuck Heston, as a Mexican, nonetheless…

Chase – be proud in knowing that ‘Way of the Gun’ was actually a finalist, but alas did not make the final cut.

  4. Way of the Gun was number 11 on my list. Endlessly quotable, but not on a family-friendly site such as ours.

  5. Those are all classic, but I fear none are quite as badass as the opening of BLADE.

I’m sort of kidding, but not about how awesomely badass the opening of BLADE is, because it IS.

I actually forgot the opening of FIGHT CLUB.

    Love ya Honey Bunny.

  6. I’ll go with Zach Snyder’s pre credit opening of Dawn of the Dead.
That was as good as it gets!

  7. Once again, Headhunters, boobytraps, doublecrosses, snakes and a giant ball of death…”Raiders of the Lost Ark” easily has the greatest openning . It packs more excitement in the first few minutes than most 90 minute movies have in the entire picture.

“Shaft” the original,A supercool Black guy strools, naw glides through Manhattan whith Isaac Hayes score Playing in the background. No Action, but it sets the tone for whats going to happen perfectly.

A very tight closeup of the eyes of a hardened killer. The camera pulls back and you see two other killers enter tne scene. They walk towards a saloon. Three killers enter the swing door, gunshots are heard and one different killer jumps out of a window. “The Ugly” is written on the screen in blood red letters. the door swings open and you see two of the gunmen lying on the floor as the third man desperately tries to get a shot off……”The Good, The Bad & the Ugly”

Oh yeah, happy birthday to me.

  8. I love the lines in “Once upon a Time in the West”
Jack Elam ” Looks like we’re one horse short”
Brunson ” No,you brought two too many”
    clasic

  9. Full metal jaket should definatly be on this list. the first 5 minutes are hillarious and gets more laughs than most one and a half hour comedies. it easily trumps the opening to lord of the rings and most of the other films as well. most are good choices though but fight clubs opening was nothing special im not sure how it got on this list.
