Five Reasons Why… You need to see ‘Star Trek’ this weekend

Welcome to “Five Reasons Why” our new column where we explain the top five reasons to see, not see, rent or dont rent a certain movie. This week we of course have to give it up to ‘Star Trek’ which could be the best movie of the year, and possibly one of the best of the decade. Check out
05. Its on the IMAX
You know that deep down inside you want to hear the thundering boom as the new U.S.S. Enterpirse comes roaring by for the first time and seeing it on the massive IMAX screen will make you sick to your stomach..with excitement.
04. Karl Urban, Simon Pegg and John Cho

Not only do Chekov, McCoy, Sulu, and all the rest of the crew get their own moments in the spotlight, they are all played by top notch actors give first-rate performances. Karl Urban has DeForest Kelley’s mannerisms down perfectly. He really embodies the role of Leonard “Bones” McCoy. Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, Zoe Saldana, and John Cho are also great as Scottie, Chekov, Uhura, and Sulu, respectively. Everyone in the film gives an incredible performance.
03. It has a great screenplay that can be enjoyed by Trekkies and non-Trekkies

*SPOILER ALERT* One of the great things about ‘Star Trek’ is that it can be enjoyed by Trekkies and non-Trekkies alike. Not only will Trekkies love it, they can’t really complain about any continuity issues the film has with being a prequel to original series. From frame one of the film, as we learn later in the film, the story that unfolds creates an alternate time line where anything, yes ANYTHING, can happen. Spock could die. The Enterprise could explode. Kahn could become president of Starfleet. It could all happen, and, because of the CYA screenplay written by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, die-hard fans of the original series can’t say a word.
02. Zachary Quinto is Spock

From the moment I first learned about Zachary Quinto being cast as a young Spock, I was sold on this new ‘Star Trek’. As someone who has now become completely turned off of the ‘Heroes’ TV series, I can attest as my opinion that Quinto was the sole consistent source of quality substance throughout the first three seasons. But, that’s somewhat irrelevant. Quinto not only has the perfect look to pull off a younger Spock, but more importantly he truly nails the facial, gestural and vocal nuances of the character and in short, damn near literally becomes Leonard Nimoy as Spock in his youth. ‘Star Trek’ is amazing, but if nothing else gets you to the film while in theaters, it should be this. I’m seriously considering a supporting actor nod for Quinto, if I had my way.
01. The movie will be the biggest summer blockbuster of 2009
Look I know its early in the blockbuster movies season, however this movie is set to hopefully do $100 million in its opening weekend and it damn well deserves it! Having never seen a ‘Star Trek’ movie, or any of the ‘Star Trek’ TV Show Episodes I can tell you that I will definitely be revisiting the older stuff. Its also a very good sign that almost every screening last night at the IMAX was sold out. I haven’t walked out of a movie wanting to see it again as quickly as I wanted to with ‘Star Trek’. I applaud you Mr JJ Abrams on creating an epic masterpiece that everyone is gooing over.

I really dug the movie, but no way this opens to $100 million man. You may not know this because you’ve never seen anything Star Trek (what the what?!?!), but Trek isn’t exactly cool, even with awesome solar flares and my main main Abrams at the helm, it still has this stigma – it’s STAR TREK. People asked what I was doing last night and when I said “seeing the new Star Trek” the common answer was “really?” That effin Transformers movie will make more bank than Trek most likely. Maybe they should have used Orci and Kurtzman’s names more for Trek saying they wrote the Transformers crap, but that was one of the most inane scripts ever (and actually Star Treks biggest fault) so maybe not. Hell, Night At The Museum 2 might make more money than Trek. I’m guessing that this reboot does Batman Begins numbers or maybe a little more and then when Damon Lindelof comes in to add the ‘awesome’ for the sequel and the exposition is out of the way, THEN you have the potential for $100-$150 mil opening weekends and some Dark Knight-like hype.
I still think(hope) it doesn $100 million. Wolverine did 85 with shotty reviews. I think the word of mouth will spread for this like wildfire and people will go see it just to be seeing a great action/sci fi flick on the big screen. Plus its early in the summer and people are chomping for some good, huge blockbuster style flick. This does just that.
I think it will do Batman Begins numbers or better and make $175-$200 mil domestically. The word of mouth should help it, but releasing it as they originally planned in December might have worked better. People will inevitably see Wolverine still (although I hope the drop is 80% or something even more ridiculous) and then there’s Angels & Demons and apparently people are actually excited about that… huh. That said, I know I’ll spread the word on Trek and I plan on seeing it again to see the details I missed. There was so much to take in I’m sure I missed a lot as far as the action and what not. The movies special effects are really outstanding and not only that, but they’re pretty if that makes sense. Are the projected estimates for today (Fri) in yet? $7 mil for early and midnight screenings is about average isn’t it?
This film was phenomenal. I could see this potentially having somewhat of “The Dark Knight” status as being the biggest blockbuster of the summer and being critically acclaimed. But as mentioned earlier, a lot of people have to warm up to the new Star Trek theme. Yes it has a huge fan base, but it still is Star Trek none the less. The average male will be interested in seeing it, but the female audience is a different story. Hopefully with the word of mouth it will make a killing this summer at the box office.
I think it’ll be ignored except by fans and a few wandering souls who didn’t want to see Ghosts of Girlfriends Past.
I wish it did better than what it did this opening weekend, although $75mil is pretty damn good. I honestly can say this and “The Hangover” are/were the two summer movies I have been hyping myself up for. This one did not disappoint in the least and I hope it will grow some legs and have a good run for the next several weeks in theaters.
