Illumination Entertainment, the Universal-based animation studio, will develop a feature film based around the ‘Flanimals’ series.   The series of children’s books is written by comedian Ricky Gervais and illustrated by Rob Steen.   The feature film will be presented in 3D animation.

The series features 35 characters described as species of animals who make up an imaginary world.   Matt Selman (“The Simpsons”) is working on adapting the series for the screen, while Gervais will provide his voice for the lead role.

Here are a few examples of the characters we will surely see in the film:

The Grundit

The Honk

The Munty Flumple

The Puddloflaj

This last character is the one Gervais will be voicing.

“It will be great to play a short, fat, sweaty loser for a change,” Gervais said. “A real stretch.”

According to his blog, http://www.rickygervais.com/thissideofthetruth.php, he just finished his movie, ‘Invention of Lying.’ He calls it “96 minutes of pure Hollywood Gold.” Now he can finally get on with it.
