Fantasy Cast… Who should play Steve Rogers/Captain America?

fantasycast

It’s set for July 22, 2011.   ‘The First Avenger: Captain America,’ which I’m sure is going to get a name change any day now to just ‘Captain America,’ is coming out the month after ‘Thor,’ and the casting rumors are flying strong.

Of course, just about anyone can play Cap.   What role we need someone to fill is Steve Rogers.   It’s like casting Bruce Wayne before worrying about who would play Batman.

If I can put my two cents worth in, I think the perfect choice for Steve Rogers/Captain America would be Josh Holloway.

A few years back, he was at the top of everyone’s list to play Gambit in the next ‘X-Men’ movie.   I think he’s more suited to play Cap America.   He’s got the build.   He’s got the look.   He has the attitude.   Plus, being one of the favorites on a hit television show, he’s right on the cusp of breaking out.   He just needs a starring role in something like ‘Captain America’ to completely launch his career.

Now, we leave it to you.   Who do you think would make an ideal Captain America?   Are you more concerned with someone filling the Steve Rogers role?

  1. Since he’s no longer involved with The Punisher, I think Thomas Jane could fit the bill very nicely. Possibly Adrian Pasdar could too if he could bulk up an extra 15-20 pounds. Both look about the right age and seem like their looks could shift from 1940′s to 2000′s with ease. Although neither of them are blond haired, I don’t think that has to be a selling point for the character even though it is semi-iconic.

  2. Matthew says:

I’ve been watching Kings and I think Chris Egan has the right look, maybe even the attitude, but he’s not quite big enough mass wise. Jensen Ackles maybe?

I tend to think that whoever plays cap will be an unknown though, simply because most actors either have the look but not the presence or vice versa. I really don’t think Holloway could be convincing as Cap, he just doesn’t strike me that way.

  3. It should definitely be Brock Lessner

  4. Dolph Lundgren.

  5. http://wearemoviegeeks.com/2008/06/why-dolph-lundgren-is-a-better-option-for-captain-america-or-thor/

here are some of my reasons why, i have already posted above:

“Forget age for a minute..If you have seen a Dolph movie lately, you know he doesn’t look 50!

Dolph Ludgren is 6′5, and he towers over most people in his movies, so that makes him a perfect fit for Captain America after he takes the serum. It would be very easy to make him seem smaller before he takes the serum just like they have done with many superhero’s in the past. He already has blond hair so he would be perfect for either Thor or The Captain.”

Here is a picture of what Dolph looks like next to a normal human being (as opposed to the super soldier that he is):

and a photo of Captain America after his transformation:

  6. – It should definitely be Brock Lessner –

Great choice, sir. Too bad he’s much too busy making guys tap the f*** out! Plus, it’s hard to believe someone as Captain America when they have a giant penis tattooed on their chest.

  7. Willard Smith

  8. The Survivor guy?

  9. no one is refuting my idea of Dolph yet? I am surprised.

  10. As for Brock Lessner, I guess there is makeup. Holloway seems a good choice. Yes, I am refuting Dolph. He’s cool and all, maybe he coulda done a bit younger, but he’s too old now. Not that he isn’t capable, but the actor has to fit the role and Cap isn’t that old.

  11. Scott, your argument for Dolph has kind of made you like the toddler at the house party that is pulling on all the adult’s shirts for some attention and we finally wised up and started to ignore you. lol, just kidding man.

You’re right that he doesn’t look 50, but he still looks too old to play the part.

I’ll support Dolph for Thor any day, but there is no part of me that can give him or want to see him in the role of Cap.

  12. Gavin, you nailed my POV precisely. I dunno though, it just seems weird to me, for some reason, to imagine Dolph as Thor.

  13. Patrick Wilson or Chris Pine.

  14. Travis, I can honestly relinquish my geek banner when it comes to Thor. He, honest to God, is one of the superheroes I never cared about. And the only bits I know about him are his actual Norse mythological stories as oppossed to the comic book version.

In that respect, I can see Dolph playing Thor fine; but either way I still don’t really care and am not really that interested. When it comes to the Justice League, Martian Manhunter is pretty much the same thing to me. But Cap is my 2nd favorite comic book hero so they better not screw him up!

  15. Bring on the sticks and stones, but what about John Cena? I mean, sure, his movies haven’t exactly blown away, uh… anyone, but c’mon. The guy has the build and the presence. Let’s hook the guy up with a decent acting coach fer christ’s sake. Let’s see what he can do with a quality project and a good screenplay.

    … John Cena… riiiiiiiiiiiiight!

  17. who is John Cena?

  18. First of all, Charles… really? Dude, I hope you’re not serious. “who is John Cena?” I don’t even follow wrestling anymore and I know who he is!

As for him playing Cap, sure he has the build. Although, how tall is he? Cap need to be tall, at least while he’s Cap. Steve Rogers not only bulked up from the serum, he literally got taller too… if you wanna get really technical? Anyway, it’s hard for me to picture Cena pulling this off because I just imagine seeing him in the costume and laughing. Why? Because it’s John Cena playing Cap. That’s just funny! If he were to actually do a good job, then kudos to him. On the other hand, do we really want the film to open with the WWE logo along side the Marvel logo?

  19. Harmonica Joe says:

Hey Yo! Why not Brenden Fraser?

    HJ

  20. I seriously CANT believe ppl are throwin USELESS non-acting WRESTLERS into the mix of what is sposed to be a serious movie, but he each to their own i spose

Funnily enough Ive NEVER heard ANYONE mention Paul Walker for the role he’s 6″2 Minimum cap height it wouldnt be Hard for him to drop the weight or cgi him skinnier for the early years..(he also has that ambigious (permanently 20) age look which helps with the story) blue eyed blond etc..

PLUS he CAN do serious acting (AND a convincing Brooklyn accent) when called upon ie: Running Scared..
Personally I ve always thought if ANYONE got the role they’d have to get past him… OR Josh Duhamel.. the Squad Commander from Transformers NEVER been overly blown away by him much as an actor..but the guys naturally got the build, prescence and the (military) authority to pull it off..ill give him THAT much

p.s. Cap Is NO Taller than 6 “3 in ANY comic iteration.. In Standard Marvel he is 6″2 In Ultimate Marvel He is 6″3 & he doesnt actually GROW during “Rebirth” he just maximises his FULL physiological potential strength endurance metabolism etc

  21. And Addressing the “Sawyer” issue.. Ive ALWAYS thought that guy’d be the PERFECT Gambit.. but looking at it he COULD pass as Cap.. I just (personally) think he’s that lil bit too ‘dark’(characterwise) to portray the “Ultimate Boyscout”

Alternate suggestions for Cap are up&coming star Sam Worthington (the New Mel Gibson/Tom Cruise)& Josh Duhamel who plays miltary parts REALLY well..&was ACTUALLY a quarterback in both highschool AND college so that whole “natural leadership thing” wouldnt be “acting” itd be instinctive

The most ideal and seemingly most overlooked scenario would be an intro Straight In at the deep end of WWII(with him about to “jump” into Axis territory from a plane..sans-parachute)..with flashbacks to Project Rebirth & his youth just before enlistment then cut back to his final most important mission where he stops Nazi secret ops from destroyin the free world yadayada etc

However he gets blown into the North Atlantic & is frozen for 60odd years..only to be thawed out by the adverse effects of global warming on the polar icecaps etc,
The working title should be scrapped as he is NOT the first Avenger in ANY iteration of the comics but WAS the KEY and most INSTRUMENTAL member however, the one that brought them public recognition AND acceptance.. that needs to be portrayed somehow, as for the meat of the script the best draft would HAVE to be based on Ultimates Vol.ONE with some improvisations AND a little fleshing out of the fringe characters IF neccessary/possible..you see on his own Caps an OKAY character..but average at best in a group he literally shines as the ultimate natural leader/example setter.. a group movie could also better highlight the vast socio-cultural differances in the time era he grew up in in opposition to the team he’s now been asked to lead
Who all either: swear, drink, smoke, dont believe in god, watch porn & all have their own little agendas which will at first mean absolutely nothing to him..
Rising above all this, leading the team and somehow accepting the changes he see’s without compromising his sturdy moral compass will be what could make this movie REALLY interesting, throw in some DUMBLY cool Michael Bayesque action sequences &u could be lookin at Marvels very own TDK with a twist & a compromise..(which afterall is what Marvel was BASED on..compromise)

Obviously Iron Man & Hulks already established So then itd just be Hawkeye(Josh Holloway/Jensen Ackles or EVEN Paul Walker??) Black Widow (Scarlett Johanson/Jessica Biel/Summer Glau) Thor (Vladimir Kulic/Dennis Storhøi/Dolph Lundgren???-sic) Scarlett Witch (Megan Fox/Morena Baccarin) Giant Man (Adrian Pasdar/Nathan Fillion?) Wasp(Lucy Liu/Moon BloodGood) QuickSilver (Jared Leto)

  22. andries price says:

the person will play captain america played by the champ john cena john cena will do a good job as captain america i will john cena on the first avengre; captain america and the avengres john cena will do a good job as captain america i will see john cena on all marvel movies i will see john cena as cap on the avengres he will face to face with the incredible hulk played edward norton so i will see john cena as captain america on all marvel movies in theatres july 2011 see ya.

  23. Jason Lewis as Captain America.

  24. Alcibiedes says:

I think John Hamm should play Captain America. Hes done a smashing job in Mad Men and he has the right look.

  25. Either Leonardo Dicaprio or Matt Damon would be great.

Before you crack on Leo, go re-watch the Departed…he's definitely got the acting ability, the chin, and the blonde hair. Plus, he would have AMAZING chemistry with the already high class actors like Jackson, Downey Jr, and Norton…we need a strong, proven actor here…cap has a lot of depth to him that's normally missed out on, and if we went with only looks, well then we'd get this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCw127qWhuU&fe…

And as for Damon…I don't think I really need to explain much do I?

  26. Should be an actor with some gravitas… he is THE leader. Matt Damon is the only real actor that can lead Downey, Norton and the like.

Captain America is a living icon… an American icon (no Australians or Brits please). He is smart, strategic and not a bruiser so wrestlers and fighters need not apply.

  27. Ronin1013 says:

I think it has to be a youthful all-American guy, which in my mind rule out the late 30s, early 40s jaded looking actors.

Robert Downey’s (BTW 5'6+) was in the Shaggy DA before he became Tony Stark for God's sake… and we forgave him for his battered gravitas.

I think Paul Walker could do it… he’s a young all-American looking dude who swam & made out with Jessica Alba, appeals to the Fast & Furious crowd, he’s all ready has a comic book build, he's 6'2+ (leaders are always tall), and he looks like he could give and take a punch… he’s American, known, current and visable too (in current action movies and in the latest GQ magazine looking dapper).

He wouldn't look like a punk next to Thor (Chris Helmsworth) either.

I love Cap, and I don’t want them to screw this up… If Downey can pull off Tony Stark, I believe Paul can successfully become Steve Rogers / Captain America.

  28. Stephen Colbert?

No, but seriously, I like Jeremy Renner for the role, but I didn't get enough of an idea of a size during 'Hurt Locker".
Tom Jane seems too old to me. And Damon too, maybe five years ago or 8 years, for Damon, but now? He's pushign it with that "Borne-Again" movie THe Green…whatever…
The writer has described Rogers in the movie as young, so I'm assuming the role is gonna open up to actors like Chris Pine, which is great 'cause he'd be fantastic, but I want to see him do more Star Trek so if we expect sequels to CapAm, and Avengers movies… I don't want to lose possible Trek sequels. Now that Antonio Banderas is on the rumor market for Kahn (how hard to recast Montabon's spot it must be), I don't want to lose Pine. Call me selfish.

  29. Matt Salinger

    >_>

  30. Marc Blucas would be perfect.
