Director Edward Zwick (‘Glory’, ‘Blood Diamond’, ‘Defiance’) is set to direct New Regency’s fact-based film ‘In the Heart of the Sea’. Â  Zwick wrote the script along with his Bedford Falls partner, Marshall Herskovitch.

The film will tell the true story of the  Nantucket whaling ship the Essex, which was stalked and ultimately destroyed by a sperm whale in 1820. Stranded thousands of miles from home, the crew struggled to survive; they were lost at sea for 90 days. Eight were rescued.   The sinking of the whale ship served as inspiration for Melville’s “Moby Dick”.

The hope is to begin production late this year, with Fox distributing.
