Bad News about ‘Let the Right One In’ DVD

So, if you’re a fan of horror and have seen (and liked) the Swedish vampire flick ‘Let the Right One In’ then you’ve probably already caught wind of this not-so-great news about the US release on DVD.

I’m not sure exactly who’s responsible, but those in charge have apparently decided they needed to go an screw with the subtitles for the DVD. This really pisses me off, especially since I’ve already gone and thrown down my $20 for the DVD.

I saw the movie once on a screener DVD and twice in the theater and it was great each time, if not better with each viewing. I haven’t had a chance to sit down with my new DVD yet, but Jay over at Icons of Fright has done everyone the courtesy of laying out the horror of this DVD release. Here’s just one example of the comparisons he gives us…

OK, so you recognize this scene above from the original movie, right?

Uh, yeah… so, these are the subtitles that replace the original for this scene on the US release of the DVD. WTF? How does this even make sense?

This is one of the worst examples, but it’s only one of many that Jay points out on his website Icons of Fright, where you can see the rest and wonder who needs to be dragged out into the street and beaten severely for this.

  1. UPDATE: Apparently, Magnet has heard the cries of fans the world over and will no longer produce DVDs with the “alternate” subtitles, instead going back to the original subtitles seen in theaters. When asked how to know which version a DVD has, they said to the specs on the back cover. If it reads Subtitles: English (Theatrical) then you’ve got the good stuff! Unfortunately, there doesn’t yet seem to be any plans to offer an exchange policy to those of us who went out and bought the DVD the first day…

  2. When are the re-release ones going to be avaiable? I have seen the movie and am reading the book….held off on buying the DVD but would like to get the correct version. When is this happening?

  3. Nice info. I appreciate your effort, looking forward to your feed updates…
