Sundance Review: ‘Spread’

When you see Ashton Kutcher in a film it typically leads to a rom-com of some sort, and that isn’t exactly the case with ‘Spread’. I wasn’t expecting a whole lot with this, but I left the theater pleasantly surprised.

Here is why you will see this movie: Male Movie Geeks will watch this movie because there is a full blown sex scene about every 15 minutes. Female Movie Geeks will see this because it has Ashton Kutcher in it and you see him naked a couple of times. All Movie Geeks will see this because its not your typical rom com, and it doesn’t have that fairy tale ending that we are used to from most of them.

Ashton Kutcher plays Nikki, an LA transport who has no job, no car, and no money to speak of but that doesn’t stop him from living a very lavish lifestyle at the expense of rich 40-50 year old women. He is a male gigolo and makes no problem with that fact. Basically he finds an attractive, single, rich LA woman and wins her heart by showing them a little affection and giving them mind bending sex. Within a matter of days he has moved in, drives their cars around and pays for things via the credit cards they give him. All of those things would make it easy to leave high on the horse for a long time, except the fact that he cant just be with one woman. Things turn upside down for him when he finds the one woman who knows his game, and doesn’t buy into it.

Do not expect any amazing performance from Kutcher, not that he is a bad actor but he essentially plays himself in all of his roles and this one is no different. If you like Kutcher then you will probably love this movie, unless nudity and sex bother you.

Overall Rating: 3.5 out of 5
