Sundance 2009; The iPhone Debacle

Ask any iPhone user at Sundance this year and they will all tell you the same thing: No Reception/Horrible Communications.
Basically Sundance is a huge gathering of movie geeks, nerds, and any other type of gadget freak you can imagine. Most of us also sport the iPhone and because we are all packed into such a small area it is reeking absolute havoc on our reception.
Here is an example of what I am talking about. These images are screenshots I took while standing in line for a press screening. Most if not all were from standing in the same exact position. Lets check out how my bars are going up and down.
Here I am with full bars, and on the 3G service:

Here I am still with full bars and 3G but nothing will connect:

Here I am after getting all my bars dropped without moving an inch from the above location:

Here I am now searching for reception

Now you may be saying, well I am sure this is just from time to time..nope! This has been happening all weekend, inside buildings, on buses, in the open, inside tents, sitting in theaters… every which way I can possibly try to get better reception I have tried.
AT&T needs to get their act together and prepare for users of this magnitude to be in one location at one time… hello MacWorld or any other gather of geeks.

I’m not surprised….like you said, at least 80% of people there were on an iPhone. I still find it hard to believe that 3G was available nearly everywhere in Park City, but service was still horrible.
Funny how you didn’t get good service – it seemed like every idiot had a connection during the screenings as they were all texting in the dark while I was trying to watch the films. Next time when the programmers tell you to turn your cell phones off – it means texting also! Some of us want to watch the films, not text all of our friends to find out where the next great party will be. Thanks!
