‘Watchmen’ gets cut again!

Submitted by Quin on Thursday, 4 December 20082 Comments

The movie that has graphic fans raving is having a little trouble with time. Director Zack Snyder has been doing all he can to ensure that his new movie Watchmen brings the graphic novel faithfully to the silver screen. However it looks like the director has finally succumbed to demands from the studio, which is shortening the film even more from its two hour and thirty five marker. In an interview Zach Snyder said, “The movie’s pretty long… compared to 300, which was an hour and 58 minutes. The director’s cut [of Watchmen] is about three hours and 10 minutes long. It has even more than the theatrical version, as far as the detail that gets even closer to the graphic novel.” So there you go…

Why are they cutting this movie? It was made with one intention, and that was for the fans, and if they are afraid people won’t go see it because of the length, it isn’t geared towards them anyways! I think they should leave it at it’s original length, and if it it takes three hours to tell the story, so be it. Plenty of people sat through King Kong for three hours and it wasn’t even good until the last 45. I guess I’m just upset one of the only movies I would want to sit through that long is going to be cut back, and I guarantee critics will have a problem with it not going into enough detail or something, due to its short length. Gah!

I do agree with the above poster, but I highly doubt critics will address the lack of detail, since most critics critique the film source and not the content it was adapted from. I do agree that this film is geared towards it’s core fan base, but you also have to see it from the studio’s perspective, they want to please both sides and make back their investments and then some. You can’t limit yourself to a small fan base after investing nearly 200 million (not sure if that’s an accurate figure) on a comic book flick. I’m disheartened at the news, I guess the reals fans will have to wait for the Director’s Cut.
