WAMG Top 10 Christmas Movies

Ho, ho, ho, and all that jazz! Â  ’Tis the season to catch up on a couple of great Christmas flicks. Â  We here at We Are Movie Geeks want to make sure we encourage you all to see the right Christmas movies this holiday season, so we’ve cumulated our top Christmas movies lists, ran them through our Super Deluxe Geek-o-meter, and came up with these ten. Â  It was a long process, and several honorable mentions didn’t quite make the cut.

However, if you’re a fan of Life and Adventures of Santa Claus, Santa’s Slay, White Christmas, How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966), Emmit Otter’s Jug Band Christmas, Jack Frost (yes, the horror movie), Jingle All the Way, The Family Stone, The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Polar Express, A Christmas Carol (1984), A Muppet Christmas Carol, Silent Night, Deadly Night (yeah, we have some morbid minds here), Babes in Toyland (1961), Holiday Inn, It’s a Wonderful Life, Scrooge (1971), Home Alone, Joyeux Noel, or The Santa Clause, don’t fret. Â  They were considered. Â  They just didn’t quite hack it with the rest.

Now, for the list:

10. Love, Actually (2003)

“So if you believe in Father Christmas, children, like your Uncle Billy does, buy my festering turd of a record. And particularly enjoy the incredible crassness of the moment when we try to squeeze an extra syllable into the fourth line.” – Billy Mack (Bill Nighy)

9. A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965)

“Look, Charlie, let’s face it. We all know that Christmas is a big commercial racket. It’s run by a big eastern syndicate, you know.” – Lucy Van Pelt (voiced by Tracy Stratford)

8. Miracle on 34th Street (1947)

“Oh, Christmas isn’t just a day, it’s a frame of mind… and that’s what’s been changing. That’s why I’m glad I’m here, maybe I can do something about it.” – Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn)

7. Bad Santa (2003)

“Good night, Santa. Good night, Mrs. Santa’s sister.” – The Kid (Brett Kelly)

6. Gremlins (1984)

“The worst thing that ever happened to me was on Christmas. Oh, God. It was so horrible. It was Christmas Eve. I was 9 years old. Me and Mom were decorating the tree, waiting for Dad to come home from work. A couple hours went by. Dad wasn’t home. So Mom called the office. No answer. Christmas Day came and went, and still nothing. So the police began a search. Four or five days went by. Neither one of us could eat or sleep. Everything was falling apart. It was snowing outside. The house was freezing, so I went to try to light up the fire. That’s when I noticed the smell. The firemen came and broke through the chimney top. And me and Mom were expecting them to pull out a dead cat or a bird. And instead they pulled out my father. He was dressed in a Santa Claus suit. He’d been climbing down the chimney… his arms loaded with presents. He was gonna surprise us. He slipped and broke his neck. He died instantly. And that’s how I found out there was no Santa Claus.” – Kate (Phoebe Cates)

5. Scrooged (1988)

“It’s Christmas Eve. It’s the one night of the year when we all act a little nicer, we smile a little easier, we cheer a little more. For a couple of hours out of the whole year we are the people that we always hoped we would be.” – Frank Cross (Bill Murray)

4. Die Hard (1988)

“Now I have a machine gun. Â  Ho ho ho.” – Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman)

3. Elf (2003)

“First we’ll make snow angels for a two hours, then we’ll go ice skating, then we’ll eat a whole roll of Tollhouse Cookiedough as fast as we can, and then we’ll snuggle.” – Buddy (Will Ferrell)

2. A Christmas Story (1983)

“Next to me in the blackness lay my oiled blue steel beauty. The greatest Christmas gift I had ever received, or would ever receive. Gradually, I drifted off to sleep, pringing ducks on the wing and getting off spectacular hip shots.” – Ralphie as Adult (Jean Shepherd)

1. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989)

“This is a full-blown, four-alarm holiday emergency here. We’re gonna press on, and we’re gonna have the hap, hap, happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby tap-danced with Danny f’ing Kaye. And when Santa squeezes his fat white a’ down that chimney tonight, he’s gonna find the jolliest bunch of a’holes this side of the nuthouse.” – Clark W. Griswold (Chevy Chase)

  1. Hell yeah! I’m glad to see Gremlins made the list. I was watching the 2nd one on AMC the other night. What a trip! I caught so many inside jokes now that I’m twenty years wiser, made me really appreciate Spielberg.

  2. Kevin Reape says:

    “Shitter was full!”

Christmas Vacation is a movie my family has gathered to watch every Christmas for the last 17 years of my life, and it makes everyone laugh just as hard every time.

  3. Panda Hugger says:

“I took a shower washing every body part with actual soap; including all my major crevices; including in between my toes and in my belly button which I never did before but sort of enjoyed. I washed my hair with adult formula shampoo and used cream rinse for that just-washed shine. I can’t seem to find my toothbrush, so I’ll pick one up when I go out today. Other than that, I’m in good shape.”

Home Alone didn’t make it? seriously? wow, you really are geeks! LOL

and btw…Charlie Brown Christmas is not a movie

  4. “Charlie Brown Christmas is not a movie”

Its in the DVD Movie Section at most/all major retailers!

  5. Good list! I have watched all of these already (except Gremlins) this holiday season. Charlie Brown..not a movie but an essential par of your Christmas viewing along with Year without a Santa Claus, you have to love the Miser Bros!

  6. Its a miracle….Panda Hugger and Ram Man actually agreed!!! quick, someone get me a tissue…LOL

  7. Panda Hugger says:

Have you ever seen the dolts that work retail? those bozo’s don’t know what the hell they are doing. It was made for tv. It is not a movie. It was never released in theaters.

    1. A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965) (TV)

    according to IMDB.

  8. Technically, ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas’ is a movie. The term “movie” is derived from the original terminology “motion picture” which implies a series of images shot in sequence so that when replayed at a specific speed the static images work to give the impression of the image actually moving. Furthermore, if the argument is based on the length, than ‘ACBC’ is still a “movie” because “movies” come in all lengths. I further evidence is required, and one wishes to debate the technology aspect, ‘ACBC’ was made in 1965 and the process of traditional cell animation was still being employed, therefor it’s no less of a movie than your choice of Disney animated movies. So, what other arguments can I debunk… if the definition of a movie is to have played in theaters, then what about movies that go straight to VHS/DVD? Short films? In fact, is a “Made-for-TV” movie not still a movie?

  9. Aside from no Jingle All The Way and no horror b-movies (Jack Frost and Santa’s Slay) this is a great list. No we are not crazy for putting Die Hard on here. It’s essential holiday viewing. And if anyone is looking for a last minute stocking stuffer, Best Buy has a 2-disc Die Hard exclusive steelbook edition for $7.99. Yippee Kay Yay everyone!

  10. There have been many MOVIES made for TV and classified as TV, but we consider them movies.

  11. Kevin Reape says:

Remind me never to challenge Travis to anything

  12. one of the many reasons Travis came on board!
