5 Vampire movies to see instead of ‘Twilight’ this weekend…

Submitted by Movie Geeks on Friday, 21 November 200812 Comments

Well ‘Twilight’ is officially here, and isn’t doing very well with critics, so instead of you going out and trying to find tickets to this damn movie, waiting in line for who knows how long and being disappointed why don’t you just go out to blockbuster and rent these 5 movies and kick back for some GOOD vampire movies! The great thing about these movies is they all pay respect to real vampires, and follow the vampire rules. They don’t just make their own up and hope that people just accept it.

Here are 5 movies about Vampires you wont be disappointed with:

The Lost Boys

This is one of the quintessential vampire movies that everyone has on their top lists. Not only do you have Keifer Sutherland, Corey Haim, Corey Feldman, you also get Alex Winter(Bill)! Isn’t it enough to see him in something other than ‘Bill and Ted’? If not than maybe the vampire action you get throughout the movie will do it for you.

Interview with a Vampire

This will probably be the only time you get to see Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise in the same movie, and they are freaking vampires! Not to mention you have a psychotic young Kirsten Dunst to thoroughly creep you out.

From Dusk Till Dawn

Seriously, Quentin Tarantino and George Clooney star in a Robert Rodriguez directed vampire movie? How can you possibly go wrong? Not to mention you get Cheech Marin in 3 different roles, Danny Trejo, Tom Savini with a strap on cock six shooter. You absolutely cannot pass this movie up. Oh and don’t forget Selma Hayek as a sexy vampire stripper:

Bram Stokers Dracula

All things considered, the best traditional vampire film from the classical lore since the original 1931 version that Bela Lugosi made famous. Directed by Francis Ford Copola, this movies rocks! Elaborate and lush production of a period flick with sexy vampiresses and a true sense of Gothic style. Two words… Gary Oldman! He plays such a great, twisted Dracula in this… one of the many reasons he’s one of my favorite actors!

Near Dark

If you want to talk fun and cool action-packed and modern telling of a vampire story, then you must want to talk about ‘Near Dark’. Kathryn Bigelow’s genre contribution is a modern classic… violent, funny and scary in the same way that ‘From Dusk til Dawn’ is scary. My homeboy Lance Henriksen and the wise-cracking Bill Pullman, together as vampires… plus all the other dark comedy and the butt-kicking bar scene… You’re gonna go see ‘Twilight’? Gimme a break!

BONUS:

if you just HAVE to see a Vampire movie in theaters this weekend then you need to see if ‘Let the Right One In‘ is playing anywhere near you.

Let the Right One In

I won’t hold it against you if you haven’t seen this yet, as the film is getting minimal theatrical play. However, if you do have an opportunity to see this and you choose to see ‘Twilight’ instead… I don’t recommend announcing it publicly. For my money, one of the best films of the year and easily in the top 5 vampire film of all time. Original, creepy, touching… damn near perfection!

    30 Days of Night???

oh yea…..and Underworld…..and Blade (not the last one)…..and Van Helsing (ok, I am pushing it, but it was a helluva lot better than Twilight)

How about Andy Warhol’s Dracula, also known as blood for dracula. very sick and twisted, The Hunger..a movie that proves that vampires do grow old, Fright Night…… whatever happen to the kid who got bitten, and Blade…..euro-techno-daywalking bloodbath.

we cant get them all on the list! we thought the above were the top 5 best..if we had done a top 10 all of the above would have been included.

I would even go so far as to say ‘My Best Friends a Vampire’ is a much better choice to watch than ‘Twilight’…

‘Once Bitten’ with Jim Carrey was better than ‘Twilight’.

  • Roxy said:

Well naturally, Once Bitten is amazing!

This is my second posting on the subject, but I think none of us (including yours truly)should be called movie geeks having overlooked the one and only Dracula. There is no other Dracula besides Bela Lagosi. It chilled me for years.I remember a cup of hot chocolate and chiller theater or the Late show running Dracula in glorious black and white. it remains the standard for all vampire movies.

  • Jeremy said:

Agree, Tyrone. Lugosi’s ‘Dracula’ should never be overlooked. Neither should Murnau’s original ‘Nosferatu’.

  • Scott said:

Dracula would scare the shit out of the kids we are trying to sway from going and seeing ‘Twilight’!

  • Travis said:

Of course, there’s also the various Christopher Lee as Dracula films from Hammer Horror. Bela Lugosi’s ‘Dracula’ is a given… but, unfortunately you’d have easier time convincing Ram Man that ‘The Happening’ is a great movie that you would getting the average ‘Twilight’ fan to watch a movie from 1931.
