This week @ Diabolik DVD…

Submitted by Nick on Tuesday, 28 October 2008No Comment

Let’s spotlight the more eclectic offerings in the world of home entertainment, courtesy of the fine folks over at DiabolikDVD.com; it’s owned and run by film buffs and collectors. They specialize in hard-to-find releases; horror; Asian cinema; Art House; Adult; and Cult Classics you haven’t even heard of…

This week we’ll take a look at two DVD’s no movie geek — or horror fan — should be without:

Grindhouse Releasingis slowly amassing an impressive catalogue of cult flicks and hard to find films. If you don’t know, it was Grindhouse Releasing that finally managed to bring Cannibal Holocaust to the masses — uncut and in a totally sweet 2-disc set. I have one of those (it’s out of print now) and the quality is superb.

So, of course I’m excited for the release of ‘The Beyond’ and ‘Pieces.’

THE BEYOND

‘The Beyond’ is a true cult classic, a movie that’s more of a dream than a movie… and gore the likes of which can only be found in the best of the grindhouse-era films. Faces dissolving, people being eaten, impalements and a child’s head exploding.

Here’s a sampling of what the disc includes:

- Original UNRATED, UNCENSORED director’s cut
- Spectacular hi-definition digital anamorphic widescreen transfer
- Breathtaking 5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound re-mix by Academy Award nominee Paul Ottosson
- New 2008 intro by Catriona MacColl
- Rare on-set interview with director Lucio Fulci
- Provocative commentary by stars Catriona MacColl and the late genre superstar David Warbeck
- Interviews with all the major stars and key crew members
- Optional Italian language soundtrack and original mono mix
- Lost German pre-credit sequence in FULL COLOR
- Necrophagia music video directed by Jim VanBebber (THE MANSON FAMILY)
- Original theatrical trailers
- Extensive gallery of stills and poster art
- Liner notes by legendary horror journalist Chas. Balun

PIECES

Let me offer up this quote:

“One of the top horror films of all time! Not only is this the ultimate chainsaw movie, it’s the ultimate slasher film. It has everything you could possibly want, by the bucketful. Full on chainsaw violence, absurd amounts of nudity, and the greatest ending in horror history. A masterpiece of early 80’s sleaze.” -Eli Roth, director of ‘Cabin Fever’ and ‘Hostel’

I only got to see this once and even then it was just some bootleg, so color me excited for this!

Grindhouse Releasing’s ‘Pieces’ DVD is the first official U.S. release for this movie and it is the original uncensored theatrical version. Like ‘Cannibal Holocaust,’ the Grindhouse team has put together an impressive 2-disc set.

What are you waiting for, movie geeks?
