Ryan Gosling is the Green Lantern “You Decide”

Submitted by Quin on Saturday, 18 October 20084 Comments

Well Warner Brothers has not confirmed it, but it looks as if the title of Hal Jordan, or The Green Lantern, will be given to actor Ryan Gosling. Previous choices for the role were Seth Green, David Boreanaz, and Justin Long.

Well, I’m kind of at a Holt for words, because I never read The Green Lantern comics so I do not know which actor in Hollywood would be the best fit.

But I have a serious question. Wasn’t The Green Lantern Black? If anyone knows let me know. As more information arrives I’ll keep you posted.

There was a green lantern, John Stewart, who was an African-American. He even had his own comic, Green Lantern: Mosaic, though it was eventually cancelled. His character was featured prominently in the “Justice League” cartoons. Regarding Green Lanterns, there are around- at last count- 7,200 members; They’re kind of like space cops.

This film will feature Harold ‘Hal’ Jordan, a test pilot. I think Gosling is a great actor and he’ll do his best with whatever is offered in the screenplay but I personally do not like the casting choice.

So, I’m going to go sit down and wonder what I’ve done with my life.

Wow. I was just going to say “yes, there is a black green Lantern, but there are many Green Lanterns.” That guy was much more thorough! My husband is a huge Green Lantern nerd so we are looking forward to his story finally being adapted for the big screen, although of course we are aprehensive as well. I think Ryan Gosling could be good. I don’t have any other suggestions at the moment. If you want to see a funny spoof on a trailer for The Green Lantern movie, made years ago, go to youtube and search Green Lantern Trailer Spoof, posted by Christmas Carl. If I were better at computer type things I would post a link directly to it, but I’m not so if you are really interested you’ll have to get there yourself!
    Anyway, yay for Green Lantern!

    Hey Roxy,

Did you know that the suits over at Warner Bros. were working on a ‘Green Lantern’ film that was going to be a vehicle for Jack Black?

I’m on the fence about Gosling but he’s a sight better than J.B. when it comes to potential Hal Jordons.

I have read Green Lantern comic books since the character was first introduced. Indeed, there were many Green Lanterns. Each one of them were assigned to a specific world to fight the bad guys. The character of Green Lantern who was responsible for earth did have a green and black uniform, mostly green. The Hal Jordan character had dark hair if I remember correctly and had a good physique, but he was not overly muscular or extra tall. When he was Hal Jordan, he would not have drawn any special attention to himself. None of the three actors considered for this part do not resemble the character of Hal Jordan. Ryan Gosling could probably play the part okay, but his facial structure does not resemble Hal Jordan at all. The original Green Lantern was not Afro-American. My son, who is a real comic book collector, has some of the original Green Lantern comic books that I bought when I was young. I’m still on the fence about who would look more like Hal Jordan, but I am sure there are some good actors who could play the part. I hope that the movie will do justice to the Green Lantern comics.
