I came in expecting a hatchett job. I wanted Oliver Stone to give him what he deserves. I wanted the ridicule, I wanted to see all of this frustration unleashed on the screen. I was really hoping for "Revenge of the liberal". What we got was a case study of a man who was torn between resenting and idolizing his dad. All of his actions in the film was either to spite his father or a longing for approval. He was the black sheep that achieved what the chosen one (Jeb)couldn't, but it never was enough to please dad.
There was a lot of missed oppurtunities in the movie. There never was an exploration of the relationship between W. and Jeb. They did not foucus on the election of 2000. There was no Kathleen Harris. No details on what strings were pulled to bring the election home.
I thought all of the performances were good. I found myself laughing in amazement when I realized how close Brolin was to being W. I remember saying that Stone was too nice on W. while leaving the movie. After time to reflect, maybe he was right and I was the one who's been Hard on Bush........Naw.
