‘Preacher’ Has It’s Director

Submitted by Jeremy on Thursday, 30 October 2008No Comment

Columbia Pictures recently acquired the rights to ‘Preacher’, the cult classic series from Vertigo.  Now, they’ve announced the man who will be directing the adaptation is none other than Sam Mendes (’American Beauty’, ‘Road to Perdition’, ‘Jarhead’).

The story follows Jesse Custer, a down-and-out Texas preacher who is possessed by Genesis, a supernatural entity conceived by an angel and a demon.  This gives Jesse immense power, and he, along with two others, set on a quest across America to find God and hold him accountable for his negligent nature.

The road to making a ‘Preacher’ feature film has been a long one.  At one point, Kevin Smith was attached to make it.  This got all the way to the casting stages and James Marsden was attached to the role.  At another point, ‘Preacher’ was going to be a series on HBO, but that was put into turnaround.

The series had 75 total issues and ran from 1995 to 2000.
