Discuss: Stanley Kubrick’s ‘Eyes Wide Shut’

The fact that this movie is so underrated has bothered me for a very long time. Not only was this Kubrick’s final movie, it was a masterpiece in cinema. There was a TON of controversy surrounding the movie due to the high profile Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman being the leading roles of the movie. There are also rumors that the final cut of the movie was not done by Kubrick, so no one really knows how this movie would have been pieced together.
So what do you guys think? Those of you that have seen it, is it underrated, or a total piece of crap? Have you all seen the unrated 2 disk version that was put out?

An incredibly over looked and underrated film, it is one of my favorites. The pacing is a bit slow for many but is never dull and always engaging and interesting. The slow building tension once he arrives at the house never dulls and the final line of the film, ah, brilliance!
I went to see it just because it was Stan’s last film. I was able to get past Mr and Mrs Cruise and enjoy the film. It was dark and full of twists and featured Sydney Pollack great actor / director. I think because of all the hoopla it was overlooked and poorly marketed. If I remember the trailers were pretty bad. But I think all who saw it and have the human ability of thought loved the film!
I can’t wait for the cruise bashing to end and when we just start viewing him as the great actor he is.
Kubrick was into some crazy shit but that is why he was one of the greatest directors. When Cruise went to the mask party/club, it kind of reminded me somehow all the important people in the government go to this place called Bohemian Groves. They are not doing the same shit in Eyes Wide Shut but I believe that Kubrick was into stuff like that.
I agree,Tom Cruise is actually a really good actor.
This movie is totally underrated. A great film that caps off a great director’s career. So original and so incredibly shot. Cruise and Kidman are great, even though Kidman is kinda wasted. Sidney Pollack is great as always as “that guy in the office with the great view who explains pretty much everything to the main character”. You know. That guy. You have to see it if for no other reason than to hear the last line of dialogue in Kubrick’s last film. It is so appropriate.
An excellent film. I am admittedly not the biggest Tom Cruise fan, this was certainly one of his best performances. An intriguing, beautiful film that’s under-rated and misunderstood by most critics who suggest it’s just an old man’s wish to live out some sexual fantasies. The movie is about so much more than that. Yeah, it’s a sexual movie but it’s not pornography as some would have us believe. Warner Brothers should be ashamed for what they did to this film upon its initial release. It’s one thing to censor the film of one of our greatest filmmakers of all-time, one who has never before been censored by anyone but himself, but they had the nerve to disrespect the man by censoring it after he had passed and couldn’t say anything about it. Talk about chicken sh**!
Agreed! I just recently tracked down the unrated double disk and I must say, its a way better experience to see the WHOLE movie and not the edited version.
Not to jump on the bandwagon, but I actually enjoyed this movie as well…mostly.
The only thing I couldn’t get over was the clanging piano dischord that just dragged on..and *clang cling clang*..on…and * cling cling * onnnn. I know what it was meant to do and in a few rare occasions fits. But for the most part I found it a distraction from a film that took a level of focus to keep the big picture of the story in consideration and be appreciated as such.
Last Time I saw it was in the theaters not long after release and it may be time to revisit with that uncut version.
It would be difficult to call loving this movie jumping on the bandwagon and the majority of people HATE this movie..so i think you are safe.
